Welcome to the first installment of This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 30th through Sunday, April 5th.

The Beer + Comics book club will be discussing two collections of popular ongoing comic book series starring female characters published by Marvel Comics at their meeting tonight: Captain Marvel Volume 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More (collecting Captain Marvel #1-6, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and illustrated by David Lopez) and Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal (collecting Ms. Marvel #1-5, written by G. Willow Wilson and illustrated by Adrian Alphona). While this book club meets at the Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers, this is a 21+ event, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own beer, as well as their desire to discuss beer and comics with fellow fans of both.
When: Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 PM
Where: The Saloon
Fans of alcoholic beverages and geek friendly events may also be interested in attending Gamer Hour at the Saloon Thursday night. Games on tap will be the Nintendo Wii titles Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, and there will also be board and card games available to play. Prizes for placing first in these games will include the aforementioned alcoholic beverages, as well as gamer gear and gift cards from Mattie St. Clair’s House of Spirits on Main Street (another Minneapolis saloon), Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery in Minneapolis, and Minneapolis leather retailer and coffee bar Twin Cities Leather & Latte.

Finally, Thursday through Sunday the Minnesota Science Fiction Society will be hosting Minicon 50, the fiftieth iteration of the general science fiction convention that they hold every year over Easter weekend. Guests of Honor at this year’s convention will include Tom Doherty (founder, president, and publisher of Tor Books), Larry Niven (Robert A. Heinlein Award, Hugo Award, and Nebula Award winning writer), Brandon Sanderson (Hugo Award winning and New York Times best selling writer), Adam Stemple (Minnesota based musician and writer), Michael Whelan (Science Fiction Hall of Fame artist), and Jane Yolen (Caldecott Medal, Nebula Award, and World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement winning writer).
