Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 27th through Sunday, May 3rd.
What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Monday, April 27th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers
At their meeting tonight, the Beer + Comics book club will be discussing Heck by Zander Cannon, the Top Shelf Productions–published graphic novel collection of the comic book of the same name previously serialized in Cannon’s digital magazine Double Barrel. Cannon himself (Eisner Award winner and artist of Alan Moore’s comic-book series Top 10 and spinoff miniseries Smax, among many other works) will be in attendance to answer any and all questions about Heck and his career as a comic-book creator. While this book club meets at the Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers, this is a 21+ event, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own beer, as well as their desire to discuss beer and comics with fellow fans of both.
What: Screening, Movies & Films
When: Monday, April 27th and Tuesday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Where: The Trylon Microcinema
The Trylon Microcinema is screening a series of films by Andy and Lana Wachowski on Monday and Tuesday nights all throughout the month of April. The four films selected will provide “a vibrant cross-section of [the Wachowskis’] work,” which often explores “themes of an oppressed underclass rising up against those in control” in “cinematic environments that feel well-considered and complete.” The final film in this series being shown tonight and tomorrow night is 2008’s Speed Racer.
What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, April 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Spyhouse Coffee Shop
The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is their Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”
