Sarah J. Maas: A Court of Thorns and Roses Ticketed Event

What: Reading, Signing
When: Monday, May 11th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Red Balloon Bookshop

Sarah J. Maas, author of the Throne of Glass series, will be appearing at the Red Balloon Bookshop to read from the first book in her latest series, A Court of Thorns and Roses. She will also be discussing this new novel, which “weaves together classic far lore, villainous curses, iconic fairy tales, lethal danger, simmering romance, and epic battles,” with Red Balloon’s Amy Oelkers as well as signing copies of it and her other works.

Books & Bars: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Republic at Calhoun Square

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The club meets three Tuesdays each month: the first Tuesday of the month at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior, Minnesota; the second Tuesday at Republic Calhoun Square in Minneapolis; and the third Tuesday at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul. The book being read and discussed this month is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Driftwood Char Bar

TC Trek Trivia is the only pub quiz in the Twin Cities dedicated solely to Star Trek. Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article Meet Minnesota Cosplayers: Cyril Cosplay, Master Trekkie, Ninjabearbear09, and Brichibi Cosplays), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek; Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, provided this month by Taylor Richard and the Blue Knights.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, May 14th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club (and their “sub-club” Make It Sew) meet Thursday evenings at the Event Horizon and invite you to your own craft projects or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” This week’s meeting of these clubs will provide attendees with a specific project to work on, as they do the third Thursday of every month.

Geek Physique: Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Meet-Up, Sport & Fitness
When: Thursday, May 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

Another club created by the Geek Partnership Society meets on Thursdays as well: Geek Physique, which invites you to join the group for its Geek Slink Belly Dance, a session “full of shimmies, shakes, and just enough sweat to get your new year amped and healthy.” They describe the class as being “casual and fun with a nerdy flare,” and encourage anyone of any age, gender, body type, or skill level to come to this “safe space class.”

Must Talk TV: Mad Men

What: Meet-Up, Television
When: Thursday, May 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Republic at Seven Corners

Yet another option for you this Thursday evening is being provided by Rewire, a new initiative from Twin Cities Public Television that “involves a series of smart and playful events, content, and online engagements that take TV outside the box—and into the digital era.” One such event is Must Talk TV, their “book club for binge-watchers” that invites attendees to “treat these modern day TV dramas like the high art and literature they’ve aspired to be.” TV dramas discussed in past months have included Downton Abbey, House of Cards, The Bletchley Circle, and Game of Thrones; this month’s is Mad Men, which is in its final season.

MSP ComicCON

What: Convention
When: Saturday, May 16th–Sunday, May 17th
Where: The Minnesota State Fairgrounds Grandstand

Finally, the Minnesota Comic Book Association’s annual MSP ComicCON (formerly known as SpringCon)  will be held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds Grandstand this Saturday and Sunday. The convention boasts 100,000 square feet of vendors and exhibitors (including the 501st Legion, the Minnesota Society of Costumers, and Minnesota Superheroes United); over 250 creators (including Patrick Gleason, Gene Ha, Christopher Jones, Dan Jurgens, Aaron Kuder, Aaron Lopresti, Doug Mahnke, Angel Medina, Tom Nguyen, Mike Norton, Ben Templesmith, Bill Willingham); door prizes; grab bags; and more!
