What: Screening, Music
When: Monday, August 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Loring Park

“Bring your friends and a picnic blanket and claim a spot on the grass” for a performance by Tom Petty cover band All Tomorrow’s Petty (7:00 p.m.) and a screening of 1966’s Batman: The Movie (dusk, around 8:45 p.m.) in lovely Loring Park. In case of rain, head indoors to the Walker Cinema instead.

Fearless Lab August Performance

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, August 11th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

While Fearless Comedy Productions’ artistic director, Tim Wick, provides the disclaimer that a performance in the Fearless Lab series “isn’t always the best show,” “doesn’t take the most work,” and “isn’t the most exotic idea,” what it does give the performers “the stage time they need to get better” and “a chance to try stand-up, storytelling, scriptwriting, and whatever else they want to do,” which is in fitting with the goal of Fearless Comedy Productions, which is “to produce comedy without limits and to help each performer and producer find their unique voice.”

This month’s theme is “Summertime Blues,” and performers will include Linda Aarons (stand-up), Elizabeth Ess (stand-up), Jon Gershberg (stand-up), Nancee Magistad (stand-up), Nico Pecans (drag), and Transvaginal Mesh (Leah Isaacson and TCG’s own Sally Foster, improv). It is also apparently rated X for “Xactly the Right Amount of Profanity.”

Internet Cat Video Festival 2015

The fourth annual Internet Cat Video Festival will be hosted by Barb Abney of local radio station Go 96.3 (formerly of the Current) and held at CHS Field, the new home of the St. Paul Saints, this Wednesday evening. Curated by Will Braden—the creator of the Henri Le Chat Noir series of videos and the winner of the festival’s first Golden Kitty Award—the event will feature an all-new assortment of videos as well as “a variety of cat-ivities, art adventures, photo ops, and other meowvelous fun.”

TC Trek Trivia Second Anniversary Party

What: Trivia, Movies & TV
When: Wednesday, August 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

If you aren’t one of the 16,000-plus people who have indicated on Facebook that they will be attending the Internet Cat Video Festival (above), TC Trek Trivia, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated solely to Star Trek, is another event option this Wednesday evening. Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article Meet Minnesota Cosplayers), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round.

Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, provided this month by Demitri Rallis and From Frogleg. A costume contest, prizes, and refreshments will also be provided to attendees in honor of the second anniversary of TC Trek Trivia.

Note that this is one of two Trek-themed events next week—you can also check out the Star Trek Bar Crawl on Saturday!

Geek Chic Knitting

When: Thursday, August 13th at 5:00 p.m.

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

When: Thursday, August 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” This Thursday they will be tie-dying “all the things,“ both using traditional dye and using a method with rubbing alcohol and Sharpies. Dye and markers will be provided.”

Tsuinshi Anime Showing

What: Meet-Up, Screening, Anime
When: Friday, August 14th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In addition to Anime Detour (the annual convention for fans of Japanese animation, manga, video games, and culture), Anime Twin Cities is also working to provide monthly events for fans of anime and manga in the Twin Cities. One such event is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which they have joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” at which they will be showing various anime movies and series.

Star Trek Bar Crawl IV

What: Bar Crawl, Movies & TV
When: Saturday, August 15th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Northeast Minneapolis

Northeast Minneapolis is once again the final frontier for the voyages of the Star Trek Bar Crawl, another geeky event in its fourth year, and a second opportunity for Star Trek fans to go on an “away mission” this week. According to Dani and Donavon Indovino Cawley, creators of the bar crawl, its continuing mission is “to explore strange, new bars . . .to seek out new friends and new things to do . . . to boldly drink where we’ve actually already drunk the last few years before!” The bars that the crawl will be beaming down to this weekend include the 1029 Bar (at 4:00 p.m.), Dusty’s Bar (5:00 p.m.), the 331 Club (6:00 p.m.), Mayslack’s (7:00 p.m.), the Knight Cap (8:00 p.m.), and Dangerous Man Brewing Company (9:00 p.m.).

Dude Nord: An Outdoor Big Lebowski Experience

What: Screening, Movies & TV
When: Saturday, August 15th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Du Nord Craft Spirits

Finally, another event this Saturday evening that will combine both geeky interests and alcohol is the Dude Nord Outdoor Big Lebowski Experience. The Trylon Microcinema will be screening The Big Lebowski in partnership with Du Nord Craft Spirits, who will be hosting “a relaxing evening of Dude-inspired Minnesota craft cocktails,” “tasty Minnesota Dude food” (provided by the Willie’s Diner food truck), music, and a variety of “Dude-inspired activities,” such as the “What’s Your Rug’s Story?” storytelling contest, in their parking lot. They also invite you to “bring your own chair or your favorite outdoor-friendly rug.”
