United Geeks of Gaming Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, August 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is their Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, August 27th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Beer + Comics Book Club: X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga

What: Meet-Up, Beer, Comics, Screening, TV
When: Friday, August 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: 4044 16th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55407

The Beer + Comics book club will be discussing Marvel Comics’ X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga by Chris Claremont and John Byrne at the group’s meeting this Friday, which will be held at host Kari Pearson’s house this month for its annual potluck party. Attendees are encouraged to BYOE (“Bring Your Own Everything”), including beer (as always), food for themselves and/or to share with others, and lawn chairs (“If you forget this, you will be sitting on the ground,” according to Kari). Provided are a grill for food, a fire pit for making s’mores, and a projector for showing the episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series inspired by The Dark Phoenix Saga following the discussion.

Tsuinshi Anime Club

What: Meet-Up, Screening, Anime
When: Friday, August 28th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In addition to Anime Detour (the annual convention for fans of Japanese animation, manga, video games, and culture), Anime Twin Cities is also working to provide monthly events for fans of anime and manga in the Twin Cities. One such event is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which they have joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” at which they will be showing various anime movies and series.

Geek Garage Sale Donation Drop-Off

What: Donation Drop Off
When: Thursday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, August 29th–30th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society is now accepting donations for its upcoming Great Geek Garage Sale (September 12 and 13), charity auction, and technology recycling program, which they are providing in partnership with Free Geek Twin Cities. Donation items can be dropped off Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. or Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Additional drop-off times can also be arranged by appointment—contact [email protected].

Circus Aerial Arts in the Park Free Public Show

What: Performance, Arts
When: Saturday, August 29th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Minnehaha Falls

2 Defy Gravity and other local acts are partnering to put on a free public aerial-arts circus performance this Saturday at the Minnehaha Falls bandstand. This “unforgettable outdoor show” will include performances “on trapeze, silks, lyra, and more” and is conveniently located near Sea Salt Eatery.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Screening, Movies & TV, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, August 29th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.
