Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, September 28th through Sunday, October 4th.

The Comic Book Story of Beer Author Event

What: Reading Books, Comics
When: Tuesday, September 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Dangerous Man Brewing Company

Mike Smith, Aaron McConnell, and Johnathan Hennesey—the authors and illustrator team behind a history of beer in graphic-novel form newly released on September 22—are going on a national brewery tour to promote it. This week, they’ll be at Dangerous Man Brewing in Northeast Minneapolis for a reading, signing, and meet-and-greet. Learn more about the book here.

United Geeks of Gaming Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is their Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even playtested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Redshift Live

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Theater

Bringing “the spirit of the 1950s radio dramas to the 21st century,” Redshift is a monthly sci-fi “audio anthology series” featuring local actors performing works by local writers. This Wednesday evening they will be performing two stories live on stage at the Phoenix Theater: The Collector by David Bruns and a second story never before performed.

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 1st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Social Science: Undead Rising

What: Science
When: Thursday, October 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

Social Science is a themed “adult night” at the Science Museum of Minnesota, “welcoming those 21 and over to grab a drink, enjoy the museum, and experience innovative programming.” The theme this Thursday night will be Undead Rising, to which you are invited to “discover real-life experiences and phenomena that give us a glimpse into the surprising lively side of the undead.”

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 1st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Conundrum Radio Players: Radio FEAR

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, October 1st–Sunday, October 11th
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

The Conundrum Radio Players invite you to join them for a night of “terror, mystery, suspense, and mayhem” as their “small cast of actors . . . accompanied by live sound and technical effects artists” present Radio FEAR, an evening of four one-act radio plays performed live at the Historic Mounds Theater. These four stories are written by “some of the biggest names in science fiction,” including Three Skeleton Key, Nightfall by Isaac Asimov, Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury, and A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman.

United Geeks of Gaming: Open Gaming

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, October 3rd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In addition to their Game Designer Sessions, the Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group also offers an Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board game, card game, and/or role playing game, but the United Geeks of Gaming have amassed an impressive library of their own games as well.

Cinema in the Cemetery: Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages

What: Screening, Movies, Music
When: Saturday, October 3rd at 7:15 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery

Friends of the Cemetery and Trylon Microcinema will be screening the silent documentary Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages at Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery at 7:15 p.m. this Saturday, with live accompaniment begin provided by Rats of the People Motion Picture Orchestra. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy offerings from the Taco Taxi food truck as well as to “experience the historic cemetery and smart phone history hunts.” The cost of this event is $10.00, the proceeds of which will help the Friends of the Cemetery’s efforts to restore the steel-and-limestone fence that borders the cemetery along Lake Street and Cedar Avenue.
