Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, October 5th through Sunday, October 11th.

Twin Cities Queer Book Club: Falling in Love with Hominids by Nalo Hopkinson

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Monday, October 5th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Boneshaker Books

The Twin Cities Queer Book Club is a new queer book group for Minneapolis and is the self-proclaimed “smartest, coolest, tenderest, foxiest book club on the planet” to which anyone and everyone is welcome. The group meets the first Monday of every month at Boneshaker Books, where this month the book to be discussed is Falling in Love with Hominids, a collection of short stories by Nalo Hopkinson, whose “singular, vivid tales, which mix the modern with Afro-Caribbean folklore, are occupied by creatures unpredictable and strange: chickens that breathe fire, adults who eat children, and spirits that haunt shopping malls.”

Books & Bars: The Secret History by Donna Tartt

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, October 6th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: The Happy Gnome

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Anime Twin Cities Kotatsu

What: Meet-Up, Anime
When: Tuesday, October 6th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Davanni’s, 310 White Bear Ave., St. Paul

Kotatsu is a monthly open hangout night presented by Anime Twin Cities (the parent organization of the Anime Detour convention) to which you are invited to bring games, cards, knitting, writing, “or any other hobby that suits you.” You are also more than welcome to “just bring yourself and join us around a table for good company and good conversation.” This is a public gathering being held at the Davanni’s at on White Bear Ave. in St. Paul; attendees are encouraged to “look for the host wearing a blue armband with the ATC logo” upon arrival.

Geek Partnership Society Geeks Read

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s book club Geeks Read explores books that are important to the history of the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres or to “our own personal histories.” The club meets on the first Tuesday of every month, and also provides a potluck of treats to accompany (and fuel) discussion, so “feel free to bring something tasty!”

GOOFDA 2: Goof Up the Funk!

What: Concert
When: Wednesday, October 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall

GOOFDA 2 is the second annual “concert of Minnesota musicians covering novelty songs.” Musicians featured at this year’s installment will include Big Cats, Gabriel Douglas, Jack Greve, Julida and the Soul, Prairie Fire Lady Choir, and Jonathan Seldat. All proceeds from this event will benefit Vega Productions, a nonprofit organization that “supports quality music and art education in schools” and providing instruments to schools in Minnesota.

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 8th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Geek Partnership Society Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 8th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Conundrum Radio Players: Radio FEAR

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday October 8th–10th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 11th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

The Conundrum Radio Players invite you to join them for a night of “terror, mystery, suspense, and mayhem” as their “small cast of actors . . . accompanied by live sound and technical effects artists” present Radio FEAR, an evening of four one-act radio plays performed live at the Historic Mounds Theater. These four stories are written by “some of the biggest names in science fiction,” including Three Skeleton KeyNightfall by Isaac Asimov, Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury, and A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman.

SuicideGirls Blackheart Burlesque

What: Night Life, Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, October 9th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Mill City Nights

The SuicideGirls’ Blackheart Burlesque is a burlesque show unlike any on the planet, “with stripteases and performances poking fun at Game of Thrones, The Big Lebowski, Planet of the Apes, and Star Wars.”

JOFCon MSP 2015

What: Convention
When: Friday, October 9th–Sunday, October 11th
Where: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Minneapolis – Park Place

JOFCon MSP is a convention aimed at organizers of geek conventions to which “all are welcome, so long as they’re interested in learning more about fanac (‘fannish activities’).” The JOFs (Journeypersons of Fandom) believe “everyone has something to learn, and something to teach.”

NerdCon: Stories

What: Convention
When: Friday, October 9th–Saturday, October 10th
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

NerdCon: Stories is the first of the NerdCons “to celebrate the enthusiasm of the Nerd!” Honoring the institution of storytelling, this gathering at the Minneapolis Convention Center will play host to a diverse group of podcasters, novelists, cartoonists, musicians, poets, and other guests—including a number of high-profile names in the nerd world and beyond—for “an exceptional celebration” of storytelling in all its forms.

Fall ComiCon

What: Convention
When: Saturday, October 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds

Visit with writers and artists, shop for art and comic books, visit the NiCoral Arkham Carnival, and more at the Midwest Comic Book Association’s fall show. This year’s guests include Doug Mahnke, Gordon Purcell, and Ron Wilson, and exhibitors include Encore Software, the MN Society of Costumers, MN Superheroes United, among many others. Costumes are encouraged, and the event is open to all ages.

Making Connections Saturday

What: Meet-Up, Science
When: Saturday, October 10th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

At Making Connections Saturday, you will have the opportunity to connect with “artists, scientists, crafters, fixers and tinkerers from around the Twin Cities who will share their creations and crafts through hands-on activities and dynamic displays” and also “participate in hands-on creating and making alongside these presenters from a wide range of backgrounds, who are eager to share their expertise.”

Geek Partnership Society Movie Night Cosplay and Fundraising Event

What: Screening, Movies
When: Saturday, October 10th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society invites you to join them “for an evening of Fun, Feminist Science Fiction from Down Under” at which they will be screening the fan-favorite postapocalyptic movies Mad Max: Fury Road and Tank Girl. In addition to showing these two films, GPS will also be “raising funds for BCRF as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encouraging anyone interested to join in on the fun with movie-inspired cosplay.”
