MBPR Happy Hour/MN Publishing Tweet Up

What: Meet-Up, Books, Happy Hour
When: Tuesday, October 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Wilde Roast Cafe

The Minnesota Book Publishers’ Roundtable and the MN Publishing Tweet Up have partnered to host monthly happy hours for publishing professionals, colleagues, and book lovers. This month’s happy hour will be held at Wilde Roast Cafe in Minneapolis.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies & TV
When: Wednesday, October 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, provided this month by Roswell MN.

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 15th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Third Thursday: Artoberfest

What: Arts, Beer
When: Thursday, October 15th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

On the third Thursday of each month, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts invites you to “experience their diverse art collection through unique programs, drinks, and live music.” This month, “toast to the art of beer; connect with beer, food, and culture magazine The Growler; taste art-inspired brews from local breweries . . . tour beer steins and drinking vessels in the museum’s collection; make beer-inspired arts & crafts; celebrate opening night of the latest MAEP exhibitions; and enjoy live music from Tropical Depression.” Breweries featured will include Bad Weather Brewing Company, Fair State Brewing Cooperative, Fulton Beer, and Wabasha Brewing Company, and artists will include Jamie Kinroy and Catherine Meier.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 15th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Nerd Night: Pumpkin Carving Contest

What: Arts, Crafts, Beer
When: Thursday, October 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tin Whiskers Brewing Co.

The organizers of Nerd Night and Tin Whiskers Brewing Co. are hosting a pumpkin-carving contest this Thursday at which individual contestants and teams will have two hours “to show off their artistic skills by carving the best (scariest, goofiest, nerdiest, your call!) pumpkin they can.” There are “sweet prizes on the line,” including a $20 Tin Whiskers gift card, a bar of Schottky Pumpkin soap, and two Schottky Pumpkin pint glasses for the first place winner(s); two Schottky Pumpkin pint glasses for the second place winner(s); and a round of beer (up to four pints) for the third place winner(s). Attendees are advised to bring their own pumpkin, hollowed out ahead of time if possible, and pumpkin-carving tools.

Anime Fusion

What: Conventions, Anime
When: Friday, October 16th–Sunday, October 18th
Where: Ramada Bloomington at the Mall of America

Anime Fusion is a convention “dedicated to bringing the classic favorites of anime back into the spotlight alongside the newest titles fresh from Japan.” In order to accomplish this mission at their fourth annual convention, convention organizers are “inviting guests from a wide range of backgrounds . . . filling our game rooms with a variety of choices that span the decades, [and] selecting shows for our video rooms that highlight the popular new releases and the beloved older titles that inspired them.” Guests of Honor at this year’s convention will include voice actors Caitlynn French, Krystal LaPorte, Lesley Pedersen, Chris Rager, and Samurai Dan and Jillian.

Twin Cities Book Festival

What: Festival, Books
When: Saturday, October 17th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds

The Twin Cities Book Festival is a free, day-long festival that is the “largest and most important literary gathering in the upper midwest.” Authors, publishers, magazines, booksellers, and “local literary heroes” will be coming to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for readings, activities, panel discussions, and more for kids, teenagers, and adults.

Zombie Pub Crawl

What: Meet-Up, Night Life, Pub Crawl
When: Saturday, October 17th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Downtown Minneapolis

The “World’s Greatest Undead Party” will be held in Minneapolis once again this Saturday as thousands upon thousands of undead souls (approximately 20,000, if the Facebook event page is to be believed) will descend upon downtown Minneapolis “for a night of pub crawling, dancing, world-class live entertainment, and all sorts of other fiendish fun” at dozens of participating bars, including live music, food trucks, and the World Brain-Eating Championships. Last year’s crawl set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of zombies with an attendance of 15,458.
