Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, October 26th through Sunday, November 1st.

The Monday Night Comedy Halloween Show from HELL!

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, October 26th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground

The Monday Night Comedy Show is a booked showcase for local comedians on Monday nights at Club Underground. Tonight they invite you to “do a practice run of your Sexy Coffee Pot costume” at their annual “Halloween Funtime Terror Blood Murder Party,” which may or may not include “fog, free candy, costumes, prizes for great costumes, mystery, seduction,” and of course, comedy. Following this free event there will also be a karaoke party at the Vegas Lounge, located nearby.

Must See TriVia

What: Trivia, TV
When: Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Driftwood Char Bar

Spare Squares Trivia (the newly named producers of TC Trek Trivia) invite you to tune in to the pilot episode of Must See TriVia, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to the sitcoms from the era of Must See TV and TGIF. Must See TriVia consists of five rounds: TGI-WTF (questions about sitcoms on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX); Where’s the Beef? (in which teams will be asked to identify the sitcom character pictured); Alt-Rocking (questions about sitcoms on MTV, SNICK, the WB, and more); Too Legit to Quit (in which teams will be asked to complete the lyrics of the sitcom theme song played); and a “wild card” round.

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is their Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Beer + Comics Book Club: Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel

What: Meet-Up, Beer, Comics
When: Wednesday, October 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

The Beer + Comics book club will be discussing Alison Bechdel’s Are You My Mother? at their meeting this month. The book club is “taking the show on the road” this fall and “trying out different breweries as well as different nights of the week to allow for people’s varying schedules.” This week it’s Wednesday, and the brewery is the Bauhaus Brew Labs.

Acronym Battle!

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, October 28th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground

From Modern Antics (the creators of Pundamonium: The Twin Cities Pun Slam) and Spare Squares Trivia (aforementioned creators of TC Trek Trivia and Must See TriVia) comes a new event: Acronym Battle, which is “just what it sounds like: eight contestants face off to make up definitions to acronyms and try to woo five audience judges to vote for them.” There will be three acronyms per round, three rounds, and one winner.

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 29th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, October 31st at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.
