Books & Bars: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

What: Meet-Up, Books, Beer
When: Tuesday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Indeed Taproom

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

Fearless Lab November Performance

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, November 10th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

While Fearless Comedy Productions’ artistic director, Tim Wick, provides the disclaimer that a performance in the Fearless Lab series “isn’t always the best show,” “doesn’t take the most work,” and “isn’t the most exotic idea,” what it does give the performers “the stage time they need to get better” and “a chance to try stand-up, storytelling, scriptwriting, and whatever else they want to do,” which is in fitting with the goal of Fearless Comedy Productions, which is “to produce comedy without limits and to help each performer and producer find their unique voice.”

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie

What: Screening, Anime
When: Tuesday, November 10th at 9:45 p.m.
Where: St. Anthony Main Theatre

The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul is screening the latest film in the Ghost in the Shell series, which is returning to the big screen “with an action-packed feature film that will blow audiences away, like the original film did over two decades ago.” According to the plot synopsis provided by the event organizers, “When the Prime Minister of Japan is assassinated by a mysterious cyborg, Major Motoko Kusanagi comes up as the prime suspect. It’s up to the agents of Public Security Section 9 to discover the true nature of the murder, and clear Motoko’s name.”

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies & TV
When: Wednesday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie (featured in our article Meet Minnesota Cosplayers) of Spare Squares Trivia, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, provided this month by Johnny O’Brien and Chris Murphy.

A Boneshaker Books Happy Hour Fundraiser

What: Beer, Books, Fundraiser, Happy Hour
When: Thursday, November 12th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Sociable Cider Werks

Boneshaker Books wants to make sure that their store is “jam packed full of amazing literature before December rolls around” and believes that the best way to accomplish that is by inviting you to their Happy Hour Fundraiser at Sociable Cider Werks, where $1.00 for every pint sold from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. will be donated directly to “your favorite all-volunteer, collectively-run, feminist, sex-positive, anarchist, anti-oppression, anti-racist bookstore!”

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, November 12th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, November 12th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Plots & Pints: Pub Trivia, Minnesota Style

What: Trivia
When: Thursday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Summit Brewery Taproom

The Friends of the St. Paul Public Library are asking all trivia lovers to “gather a team of up to four players for the third annual Plots and Pints pub quiz, where your knowledge of everything Minnesota will be tested.” Prizes will be given to the first- and second-place teams, the team with the best name, the best team from a library, and even to the last-place team! Proceeds from this event will benefit the Minnesota Book Awards.

Gamer’s Rhapsody

What: Concert, Convention, Gaming
When: Friday, November 13th–Saturday, November 14th
Where: Ramada Mall of America

This weekend marks the second annual Gamer’s Rhapsody, a convention started “to celebrate video game’s artistic and engineering beauty.” Attendees of this convention will once again have the opportunity to enjoy live performances of game music, panels and workshops on art, music, and development, a room dedicated to local independent developers, and “exhibitors and artists showing off their creations.”

Caucasian-Aggressive Pandas and Other Mulatto Tales

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, November 13th–Saturday, November 14th
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl Theater

Caucasian-Aggressive Pandas and Other Mulatto Tales is a humorous exploration of “what it’s like to be mixed raced, deal with stereotypes, and find your place in the world.” Written by Twin Cities Geek’s own Duck Washington and directed by Jena Young, these tales will encompass “both story-telling and sketch comedy in a blend of black-and-white concepts” brought to life by Samantha Cross, Ted Femrite, Matthew Kessen, and Kirsten Wade.

Triptych Poetry: A Collaborative Reading

What: Reading, Books
When: Friday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Eat My Words Books

Noting that “good things always come in three,” Eat My Words bookstore invites you to attend a collaborative reading this Friday the 13th provided by three local poets: Paula Cisewski, Tammy Darrah Wenberg, and Mark Berriman. Individually, the work of these poets is “outstanding,” but the organizers of this event promise that effect of their three voices together will be sure to “enthrall, energize, and inspire.”

Tsuinshi Anime Club

What: Screening, Anime, Movies & TV
When: Friday, November 13th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In addition to Anime Detour (the annual convention for fans of Japanese animation, manga, video games, and culture), Anime Twin Cities is also working to provide monthly events for fans of anime and manga in the Twin Cities. One such event is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which they have joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” at which they will be showing various anime movies and series.

MarsCon Masquerade Ball

What: Night Life, Parties & Dances
When: Saturday, November 14th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Hilton Minneapolis St. Paul Airport Mall of America

Finally this week, the organizers of MarsCon (the “fun-run science fiction convention for all ages held every March in the Twin Cities area”) will be hosting the ninth annual MarsCon Masquerade Ball this Saturday night at the Hilton Minneapolis St. Paul Airport Mall of America. There will be a “meet and greet” and cocktails at the bar starting at 6:00 p.m. followed by the dance and costume contest at 7:00 p.m., so “grab a costume, bring a friend, and dance the night away!”
