Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, November 23rd through Sunday, November 29th.

YA Powerhouse Panel

What: Panel, Books
When: Monday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Harriet Island Pavilion

The Red Balloon Bookshop and the Saint Paul Public Library are co-sponsoring the YA Powerhouse Panel being held at 7:00 p.m. tonight at the Harriet Island Pavilion. This “one-of-a-kind event” and “ultimate evening of magnificence” will feature “not two, not three, but FOUR bestselling, award-winning, and all-around-incredible authors: Laurie Halse Anderson (The Impossible Knife of Memory, Speak), Sarah Dessen (Saint Anything, The Truth About Forever), Jandy Nelson (I’ll Give You the Sun, The Sky is Everywhere), and Ruta Sepetys (Out of the Easy, Between Shades of Grey).”

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, November 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is their Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

William Shakespeare’s Tragedy of the Sith’s Revenge

What: Reading, Books
When: Tuesday, November 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers and Quinn Booksellers

Magers and Quinn Booksellers invite you to join them for “a night of Star Wars, Shakespeare, costumes, treats, and prizes” with Ian Doescher, author of William Shakespeare’s Tragedy of the Sith’s Revenge, who will be reading from this latest volume in his William Shakespeare’s Star Wars series. There will also be a costume contest, so “come dressed in your favorite Star Wars and/or Shakespearean attire to enter!”

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, November 26th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Black Hat Collective

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Comics
When: Saturday, November 28th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Black Hat Collective (the Geek Partnership Society’s graphic artist club) meets the fourth Saturday of every month to “engage in constructive peer critique to improve as artists and writers,” to “produce the best weird little comics we can,” and to “consume punch and pie.”

Game Night at the Phoenix Theater

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, November 28th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: The Phoenix Theater

The Phoenix Theater will be hosting a game night from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. this Saturday and invites you to “play one of [theirs], bring your own, or just enjoy the company.” All of the games will be free to play, and concessions will also be available for purchase.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, November 28th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.
