Books & Bars: How Star Wars Conquered the Universe

What: Meet-Up, Books, Bars
When: Tuesday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Indeed Brewing

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is How Star Wars Conquered the Universe by Chris Taylor.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies & TV
When: Wednesday, December 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article Meet Minnesota Cosplayers) of Spare Squares Trivia, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, provided this month by Katie Henry and the Unknowns You Should Know.

Geek Chic Knitting

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, December 10th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Beer + Comics Book Club: Saga Vol. 5

What: Meet-Up, Beer, Comics
When: Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Northbound Smokehouse and Brewpub

The Beer + Comics book club will be discussing Saga Vol. 5 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples at its meeting this month. The book club is “taking the show on the road” and “trying out different breweries as well as different nights of the week to allow for people’s varying schedules.” The night of the week being tried this month is Thursday, and the brewery is the Northbound Smokehouse and Brewpub.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, December 10th–Saturday, December 12th
Where: St. Croix Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, Hudson House Grand Hotel (Hudson, WI)

In this sequel to The 1940s Radio Hour, the Feddington Players present another alternate take on A Christmas Carol—this time as a film-noir mystery “featuring a hardboiled detective, a femme fatale, and an absurd rescue of Tiny Tim (and the Lindbergh baby) from the clutches of a Hitler-esque villain named Rudolf!”

Wicked Wenches Cabaret: Strip Wars Holiday Special

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, December 10th–Saturday, December 12th
Where: Intermedia Arts

Wicked Wenches Cabaret will be performing their holiday extravaganza this weekend, featuring an adaptation of the Star Wars Holiday Special that incorporates “a variety of dance styles including burlesque, aerial arts, modern dance, pole dance, belly dance, and more!” This will be an 18+ event, as burlesque is “adult dance theater performed by elaborately-costumed women (and some men) who peel off those elaborate costumes while dancing or singing or performing amazing feats!”

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Friday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Read the Book/See the Movie

The Geek Partnership Society’s Read the Book/See the Movie club meets on the second Friday of every month to “expand our reading and film horizons by comparing and contrasting films to their source material.” The location for this event rotates between the Waterbury Center and club member’s homes, so email Mary and George at [email protected] to learn the location of this month’s meet-up and for more information about the book and movie featured.

Tsuinshi Anime Club

What: Screening, Anime, Movies & TV
When: Friday, December 11th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In addition to Anime Detour (the annual convention for fans of Japanese animation, manga, video games, and culture), Anime Twin Cities is also working to provide monthly events for fans of anime and manga in the Twin Cities. One such event is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which they have joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” at which they will be showing various anime movies and series.

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 11th–Saturday, December 12th
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

Presented “in the original Klingon with English supertitles,” performances of A Klingon Christmas Carol begin this Thursday at the Historic Mounds Theatre in St. Paul and go through December 27. General-admission tickets are $18 in advance or $20 at the door; VIP tickets are $25 in advance or $30 (if available) at the door; and a purchase of four VIP tickets will also earn your war party a bottle of (blood)wine. And don’t miss Twin Cities Geek’s interview with show director Bill Stiteler!

Scoundrelle’s Keep/Natural 20 Studio Trunk Sale and Open House

When: Friday, December 11th–Saturday, December 12th
Where: Scoundrelle’s Keep

Heather Luca of Scoundrelle’s Keep has been creating custom corsetry and clothing for 10 years, and this weekend she and her team will be opening their doors “to welcome friends, family, and clients” to “check out what we’ve been up to, see the new space, peruse our goods and shop for holiday presents, or even custom order something new for next year.” Wine and refreshments will be served on Friday from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., and discounts on ready-made and custom orders will be offered all weekend.

Star Wars Party

What: Star Wars Party
When: Saturday, December 12th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Metropolitan State University Library and Learning Center

Metropolitan State University and the Dayton’s Bluff branch of the Saint Paul Public Library invite you to “”let your inner nerd out” at the Star Wars Party they will be hosting this Saturday on the third floor of the Library and Learning Center at MSU. The free activities that will be available for all attendees of this event to enjoy include an “obstacle course, Lego station, bingo, photo station, trivia, bean bag toss tournament, science experiments, Jedi robes, sand box, face painting, Death Star pinata, cantina musicians, light saber making, Leia buns, Star Wars snowflakes, coloring stations.”

Movie Night

When: Saturday, December 12th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society invites you “to a screening of the original theatrical releases of three of the most beloved films of our time, just days before the next installment of the series hits theaters.” If you aren’t certain what three films the previous sentence was describing, use the Force . . . or join the Geek Partnership Society’s Meetup group and RSVP to this event, and you will be sent more explicit information about it in the RSVP confirmation email.

Let the Wookiee Win: A Star Wars Quiz

What: Trivia, Movies
When: Saturday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Cardinal Tavern

The Geeks Who Drink invite you to get ready for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens “with the grandest Star Wars pub quiz this side of Tatooine.” Questions “will cover all six theatrical Star Wars films . . . and a smattering of Extended Universe references to separate the contenders from the pretenders.”

Transmission Presents: The Cantina (a Star Wars Dance Party)

What: Night Life, Parties & Dances
When: Saturday, December 12th at 9:00 pm.
Where: First Avenue

Transmission on the radio “is a weekly program on Minnesota Public Radio’s 89.3 The Current.” Transmission at Clubhouse Jäger is “a long-running night for people who like good music, showcasing the best in new wave, no wave, indie rock, British pop, garage, mod, punk, post-punk, synth-pop, electro and everything in between every Wednesday night.” And this Saturday, Transmission and DJ Jake Rudh will be teaming up with the Current, City Pages, and the Electric Fetus to present The Cantina at First Avenue. The night will include costumes (provided by you), a City Pages photo booth, and “five hours of galactic dancing to . . . specific audio and video created just for this event.” The cost of this party is $8 in advance or $10 at the door, and part of the proceeds will go to Toys for Tots MN.
