Figure Drawing Salon

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Monday, January 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a Figure Drawing Salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Hello! Welcome! Let’s Talk Comics!

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Monday, January 18th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Dreamer’s Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a meet-up for its members (both old and new) at Dreamer’s Vault Games. In addition to providing an opportunity for members to meet one another, attendees will be able to “get together, talk about comics, and talk about our goals/wants for the group in 2016.”

Monthly GM and Player Meetup

The Twin Cities Roleplaying Association (an organization “dedicated to encouraging the playing of roleplaying games in the Twin Cities metro area”) invites you to “learn about new games, chat about RPGs and the industry, announce games, find players and GMs, and make new friends” at its Monthly GM and Player Meetup this Tuesday night. The location of this event is shown only to members of the Twin Cities Roleplaying Association’s Meetup Group, so join and RSVP to this event for more information.

Café Scientifique

What: Education
When: Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” The topic this month is “Mountains and Minds: Verticality and the Rise of Modern Science” with Dr. Michael Reidy.

Photography Club Meet-Up

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Photography Club meets at the Waterbury Center at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss topics related to photography and/or participate in photo shoots. The proposed topic for this month’s meeting is camera maintenance with presenter Rusty Curry.

The Not-So Silent Planet: A Speculative Open-Mic

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The featured performer for January’s session is Tim Wick; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

GameNight: Cards Against Humanity Improvised

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, January 19th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Theater

GameNight will be doing a “long form improv show based on the Cards Against Humanity game using cards the audience chooses” at the Phoenix Theater this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. This event will also feature performances from special guests Minnesota Snow Job and Sid Oxborough.

Co-Op Talk

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Wednesday, January 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly afternoon of drinks and discussion about a topic related to the gaming industry hosted by U of M–based nonprofit Glitch, which “promotes the exploration of video games as a culture, career, and creative practice.” This month Glitch you to discuss the topic “Surveying the Silicon Prairie: Games in Minnesota” with facilitator Nic VanMeerten, co-founder and director of interactive technologies for the organization.

Bowie Movie Night

What: Screening, Movies
When: Wednesday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Turf Club

The Turf Club will be screening The Hunger and Serious Moonlight at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday in honor of David Bowie. The first film is a “sensual vampire story [that] stars rock legend David Bowie as an ailing centuries-old vampire whose fanged lover, Catherine Deneuve, seduces a mortal while seeking a new partner.” The second is a live recording of the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour, which “shattered box office records in every city” and in which “David Bowie gives one of the most dramatic and charismatic live performances of his career.”

Pundamonium: The Twin Cities Pun Slam!

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, January 20th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground

Pundamonium is a Wall Street Journal–featured “slam-style punmaking contest” that started right here in the Twin Cities and has since spread to locations all across the country, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Madison, Milwaukee, and Seattle. Pundamonium creator Art Allen explains: “One by one, 10 contestants have two minutes each to make puns based on prompts they have received ahead of time. Each contestant is immediately judged by five members of the audience, who have been selected before the show to be judges. They rank each punner on a scale of 1 to 10, often with hilariously long decimals and other commentary. Then they do it again, only this time contestants get their prompts on stage and only have 30 seconds to think and another two minutes to make puns. The top four contestants go head to head in a final pun-off.”

Geek Chic Movies & Knits

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, January 21st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Third Thursday: Art of Rebellion

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Thursday, January 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

On the third Thursday of each month, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts invites you to join them to “experience their diverse art collection through unique programs, drinks, and live music.” This month, “take in the Guerrilla Girls Takeover installation, express yourself with activist poster-making, speak your truth in the Free Speech Machine, check out the local art scene at the latest MN Artist Exhibition Program opening, [and] enjoy live music from Sarah White.”

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics!

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Comics
When: Thursday, January 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Cahoots Coffee Bar

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Cahoots Coffee Bar in St. Paul on the third Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comics Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Can You Get Cooties From a Hipster?: The Vilification Tennis Sex Ed Show

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, January 22nd at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Vilification Tennis is “a structured improvisational comedy show where competitors engage in a battle of insults [and] often touch on subjects that other Minneapolis comedy shows wouldn’t dare to” and is “quite possibly the edgiest comedy show in Minneapolis.” They will be proving that once again at the Bryant-Lake Bowl this Friday night, where they will be asking the question “Can you get cooties from a hipster?” and teaching attendees “everything your parents were too afraid to talk about.”

Tunes ’N ’Toons Brunch

What: Screening, TV, Music
When: Saturday, January 23rd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Turf Club

While “television networks may have given up on the beloved Saturday morning cartoon,” the Turf Club is continuing the tradition with another screening event this week: its Tunes ’N ’Toons Brunch. The venue will be “showing your favorite throwback cartoons while local record stores and vinyl aficionados provide the soundtrack,” with Dead Media providing the tunes on this third Saturday of the month. This event is kid friendly.

Make It Sew/Crafty Geek Saturday Salon

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Saturday, January 23rd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

Crafty Geek and Make It Sew are also hosting a second event this week: their Saturday Salon, which offers “a chance for the various sewing people and organizations in the Twin Cities to come together and get their sewing groove on.”

Geeks Ski

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Saturday, January 23rd at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Hyland Hills

Geek Physique is another club of the Geek Partnership Society and is “all about fullness of life while enjoying being a geek.” This Saturday, it will be bringing you Geeks Ski at the Hyland Hills in Bloomington and ask you to “think of it as a practical application of physics.”

The Truth is Out There: An X-Files Quiz

What: Trivia, TV, Movies
When: Saturday, January 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Cardinal

If you “still desperately want to believe,” then The Geeks Who Drink invite you attend their The Truth is Out There: An X-Files Quiz trivia event at the Cardinal this Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., “one day before the show makes its glorious return to TV.”

Big Fun Radio Funtime January Performance

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, January 23rd at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Big Fun Radio Funtime brings “old time radio comedy to new time audiences” with short comedy scripts inspired by vintage radio programs, which the group performs and records in front of a live audience. The show incorporates genres of science fiction, noir, soap operas, and more, as well as “commercials and even musical interludes by The Citizen’s Band.”

Board and Card Games in Saint Paul

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, January 24th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Claddagh Coffee

The Downtown Minneapolis Board and Card Games Meetup Group invites you to “spend your Sunday afternoon playing board games” with them at Claddagh Coffee in St. Paul. Attendees are encouraged to bring any board games that they would like to play, but there will also be a variety of games to choose from on site.
