Girly Book Club: The Paying Guest by Sarah Waters

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Monday, January 25th at 6:45 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minneapolis chapter of the Girly Book Club is hosting a meet-up at Kieran’s Irish Pub tonight at 6:45 p.m. The book being read for and discussed at this meeting (to which new members are welcome) is The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.

Trivia & Taco Cat NERD NIGHT

What: Trivia
When: Monday, January 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Eastlake Craft Brewery

Eastlake Craft Brewery is hosting Trivia & Taco Cat NERD NIGHT tonight at 7:00 p.m. The trivia will consist of “sci-fi-related questions” and Taco Cat Mexican Restaurant will be providing “out-of-this-world food all night long.”

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, January 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Must See TriVia

What: Trivia, TV
When: Tuesday, January 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Driftwood Char Bar

Spare Squares Trivia (the producers of TC Trek Trivia) invite you to tune in to the latest episode of Must See TriVia, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to the sitcoms from the era of Must See TV and TGIF. Must See TriVia consists of five rounds: TGI-WTF (questions about sitcoms on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX); Where’s the Beef? (in which teams will be asked to identify the sitcom character pictured); Alt-Rocking (questions about sitcoms on MTV, SNICK, the WB, and more); Too Legit to Quit (in which teams will be asked to complete the lyrics of the sitcom theme song played); and a “wild card” round.

Game Play Testing – Dark Moon Expansion

What: Play Test, Gaming
When: Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming will be play testing an expansion for the board game Dark Moon at the Waterbury Center this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. There will be two copies of the game available for play testing, and a maximum number of seven players can play the game at a time, so please RSVP to the event and arrive early!

Beer + Comics: Bitch Planet

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Lake Monster Brewing

The Beer + Comics book club will be discussing Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro at their meeting this month. The book club is “taking the show on the road” this fall and “trying out different breweries as well as different nights of the week to allow for people’s varying schedules.” The night of the week being tried this month is Wednesday, and the brewery is Lake Monster Brewing.

Nerd Nite January

When: Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Honey

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you to “join your fellow nerds for drinks and socializing” as we hear from “a fun lineup of presenters with topics sure to enlighten and entertain.” This month Brett Beiermann will be educating attendees about “Bird Color;” Juan Medina will be giving a talk titled “Beer: Divine Gifts and Human Ingenuity;” and Brian Hayes will ask and answer the question “Why is Sweden (and its cars) so cool?” “It’s like the Discovery Channel, with beer!”

Color+Craft Thursdays at Summit Beer Hall

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Thursday, January 28th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Summit Brewing Company

Summit Brewing Company invites you to “make your Thursday a little more colorful (and therapeutic) with adult coloring and a few pints!” Coloring sheets and several sets of colored pencils will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own coloring pages and utensils as well. The Sasquatch Sandwiches food truck will also be on-site “for all your dinner and snacking needs.”

Geek Chic Movies & Knits

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, January 28th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Board Games at Bad Weather Brewing Company

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing

The Downtown Minneapolis Board and Card Games Meetup Group is hosting Board Games at Bad Weather Brewing Company this Thursday night starting at 6:30 p.m. The organizers of this event encourage attendees to bring their own board games along, but even if you don’t own any games, “we will get you playing regardless.” They also note that when playing board games that are not your own, “please be considerate. . .Board gaming is an expensive hobby and maintaining their quality is important to those that share their games with others.”

Everyone’s a Critic: The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Hennepin County Central Library

The Everyone’s a Critic book club will be hosting a meet-up at the Hennepin County Central Library this Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The book being read for and discussed at this meeting is The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geeky Coloring Time!

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Thursday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

Another opportunity for geeky coloring time this Thursday night is the Geeky Coloring Time! meet-up being hosted by the Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek group. From 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Waterbury Center, attendees of this event will be able to “add color to depictions from Star Wars, Sailor Moon, and Zelda, to name a few.” Colored pencils and crayons will be provided, but again, bringing additional materials is encouraged.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comics Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

BOWIEOKE: An All Bowie Karaoke Celebration

What: Music, Night Life, Parties & Dances
When: Thursday, January 28th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Turf Club

Ian Rans (host of TV’s Drinking With Ian and the Dive Bar Mitzvah podcast) will be hosting BOWIEOKE: An All Bowie Karaoke Celebration at the Turf Club Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to this event cost $5, which will earn you access not only to the karaoke celebration but also to the costume contest and the “various space oddities” that await within.

GameCraft

When: Friday, January 29th–Sunday, January 31st
Where: GlitchHQ

GLITCH invites you to “join 200+ designers, artists, developers, and writers from around the Midwest to celebrate the art of creating video games” at the second annual GameCraft, their “locally hosted site for the 48-hour Global Game Jam.” All skill levels “are welcomed and encouraged to participate;” those who do will be provided with dinner and drinks at Friday’s opening ceremony as well as “complimentary coffee, tea, and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.”

Minnesota Quidditch Presents: Yule Ball 2016

When: Friday, January 29th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota

Minnesota Quidditch (“an organization of friendly and competitive Quidditch players”) will be hosting their fifth annual Yule Ball at the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota this Friday at 8:00 p.m. There are a limited number of tickets available for this event, the cost of which is $20 for a single ticket or $35 if bought in a pair.

Movie Night: Browncoat Marathon

What: Screening, Movies & TV
When: Saturday, January 30th at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society invites you to “an all-day marathon of [the] cult favorite television series” set 500 years in the future featuring “a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft [trying] to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.” If you aren’t certain what the previous sentence was describing, join the Geek Partnership Society’s Meetup group, RSVP to this event, and you will be sent more explicit information about it in the RSVP confirmation email.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, January 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Medieval Court Dance Practice

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Sunday, January 31st at 3:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Barony of Nordskogen (the Minneapolis chapter of the Society of Creative Anachronism) has partnered with the Geek Partnership Society “to make their biweekly medieval court dance practices a Geek Physique event.” This practice will be held this Sunday at the Waterbury Center at 3:30 p.m. and will be taught by Mistress Rosanore of Redthorn.
