Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 1st through Sunday, February 7th.

Books & Bars: The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, February 2nd at 6:15 p.m.
Where: The Happy Gnome

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan.

Geeks Read

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s book club Geeks Read explores books that are important to the history of the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres or to “our own personal histories.” The club meets on the first Tuesday of every month and provides a potluck of treats to accompany (and fuel) discussion, so “feel free to bring something tasty!”

When: Tuesday, February 2nd at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground

From Modern Antics (the creators of PUNDAMONIUM: The Twin Cities Pun Slam!) and Spare Squares Trivia (the creators of TC Trek Trivia and Must See TriVia) comes their latest event: Acronym Battle, which is “just what it sounds like: eight contestants face off to make up definitions to acronyms and try to woo five audience judges to vote for them.” There will be three acronyms per round, three rounds, and one winner.

Geek Chic Movies & Knits

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, January 28th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics!

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Comics
When: Thursday, February 4th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Diamonds Coffee Shoppe

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Diamonds Coffee Shoppe in Minneapolis on the first Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.


What: Play Test, Gaming
When: Friday, February 5th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

PLAY/TEST is a weekly series hosted by U of M–based nonprofit GLITCH (which “promotes the exploration of video games as a culture, career, and creative practice”) that offers “the opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

Open Gaming

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, February 6th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers an Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the United Geeks of Gaming have amassed an impressive library of their own games as well.

Saturday Morning Cartoon Yoga!

When: Saturday, February 6th at 10:00 a.m.

YogaQuest and Geek Girl Brunch will be hosting Saturday Morning Cartoon Yoga! this . . . Saturday morning. For a cost of $15, participants will be able to partake in “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to CARTOONS, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious, technicolor goodness” (also known as cereal). Interested parties are encouraged to “wear comfy yoga clothes or jammies,” and to join the Saturday Morning Cartoon Yoga! Meetup to learn where this event will be held, as the location is only shown to members.

Tunes ‘N ‘Toons Brunch

What: Screening, TV, Music
When: Saturday, February 6th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Turf Club

Another opportunity for enjoying Saturday morning cartoons is the Turf Club‘s Tunes ’N ’Toons Brunch. The venue will be “showing your favorite throwback cartoons while local record stores and vinyl aficionados provide the soundtrack,” with Barely Brothers Records providing the tunes on this first Saturday of the month. This event is kid friendly.

February Doctor Who Meetup

What: Screening, TV
When: Saturday, February 6th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup Group will be screening two episodes from Doctor Who‘s ninth series this Saturday at the Parkway Theater: The Zygon Invasion and The Zygon Inversion.

Game Play Testing – Dark Moon Expansion

What: Play Test, Gaming
When: Saturday, February 6th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming will be play testing an expansion for the board game Dark Moon at the Waterbury Center this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. There will be two copies of the game available for play testing, and a maximum number of seven players can play the game at a time, so please RSVP to the event and arrive early!

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, February 7th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

If you won’t be watching the Super Bowl this Sunday, the United Geeks of Gaming invite you to an alternative to the NFL’s game day: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Tecmo Super Bowl Party I: Retro Video Games and Craft Beer Fest

What: Meet-Up, Beer, Gaming
When: Sunday, February 7th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Community Keg House

Finally, another alternative to the actual Super Bowl this Sunday is Community Keg House‘s Tecmo Super Bowl Party I: Retro Video Games and Craft Beer Fest, at which those who “want to celebrate the Super Bowl” but who are also lovers “of retro Nintendo games” will be able to enjoy both, in addition to drinking craft beer.
