Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 22nd through Sunday, February 28th.

Board Game Night

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing Company

Bad Weather Brewing Company is hosting Board Game Night this Tuesday night starting at 6:00 p.m. The organizers encourage attendees to bring their own board games along, but even if you don’t own any games, “we will get you playing regardless.” They also note that when playing board games that are not your own, “please be considerate . . . Board gaming is an expensive hobby and maintaining their quality is important to those that share their games with others.”

Pints & Play

What: Educational, Night Life
When: Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

Pints & Play is “a series of social events for 21+ adults who are interested in the incredible innovation and creativity that comes from play.” Facilitated by “play experts” from the Minnesota Children’s Museum and hosted this month at Bauhaus Brew Labs, this event is your chance to “see who can craft the fastest or farthest-flying paper airplane using our airplane launcher prototype,” to enjoy a couple of pints, and to possibly even win a prize for your efforts.

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, roleplaying, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

YogaQuest Continues. . .

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom,” which this Tuesday night will be Star Trek.

Must See TriVia

What: Trivia, TV
When: Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Spare Squares Trivia (the producers of TC Trek Trivia) invite you to tune in to the latest episode of Must See TriVia, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to the sitcoms from the era of Must See TV and TGIF. Must See TriVia consists of five rounds: TGI-WTF (questions about sitcoms on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX); Where’s the Beef? (in which teams will be asked to identify the sitcom character pictured); Alt-Rocking (questions about sitcoms on MTV, SNICK, the WB, and more); Too Legit to Quit (in which teams will be asked to complete the lyrics of the sitcom theme song played); and a “wild card” round.

Minneapolis Comic Book Club: Batman Month

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Wednesday, February 24th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a “Batman Month” meet-up for its members at Dreamers Vault Games this Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The books being read for and discussed at this meeting are the classic Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland and Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

Geek Chic Movies & Knits

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”

Everyone’s a Critic: The Good Lord Bird by James McBride

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Thursday, February 25th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Hennepin County Central Library

The Everyone’s a Critic book club will be hosting a meet-up at the Hennepin County Central Library this Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The book in focus at this meeting is The Good Lord Bird by James McBride.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

YQdio Book Club: Lumberjanes

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Friday, February 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

In addition to the YogaQuest Continues event mentioned above, YogaQuest will also be hosting its YQdio Book Club this Friday night. The featured books at this meeting are the first two volumes of the Lumberjanes series by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, and Shannon Watters.

Blizzard World ComiCon

What: Convention
When: Saturday, February 27th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: MN Transitions High School (2872 26th Avenue South)

MN Transitions High School is hosting the Blizzard World ComiCon this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The convention will feature “comic books, action figures, games, toys, and more,” including “local creators and prize giveaways!” Admission to this event is $2 for kids (ages 11 to 17) and $3 for adults, or free if you attend in a costume.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Saturday, February 27th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Yet another event being held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, February 27th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Make It Sew! Sunday Salon

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Sunday, February 28th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew are hosting another event this weekend as well: “a chance for the various sewing people and organizations in the Twin Cities to come together and get their sewing groove on.”

Gender Jam

What: Meet-Up, LGBTQA+
When: Sunday, February 28th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam “is a safe space for Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Questioning & Intersex teens to hang out and create community.” On the last Sunday of every month this group will be meeting at Dreamers Vault Games “to play video games, look at comic books, play board/card games, snack, and be together.” Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on our Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) for more information.
