Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 21st through Sunday, March 27th.

Figure Drawing Salon

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Monday, March 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a Figure Drawing Salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Basic Aikido

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

Geek Physique and the Shuharikan Dojo invite you to come and learn the basics of the Japanese martial art of aikido at this fourth of six classes “designed to improve balance, flexibility, and confidence” in which participants will be taught “holds and control techniques.” The course will be low impact, meaning that there will be “no falls, throws or pins for the first five classes”; the sixth, held at the Shuharikan Dojo, “will include the option of falls on the dojo’s mats.”

Learning to Paint Miniatures: Layering Techniques

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Tuesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

The Fantasy Flight Games Center is hosting the second installment in its Learn to Paint Miniatures event series on Tuesday night, at which attendees will “learn how to highlight and shade 28–32 mm models using the layering technique.” A $20 entrance fee will get you “two hours of small group instruction, a miniature and brush to take home, plus 20% off minis and hobby supplies the day of the class!”

YogaQuest Continues

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

555 Reads

What: Reading, Books
When: Tuesday, March 22nd at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Five Watt Coffee

At 555 Reads, five writers have five minutes to read from their work at Five Watt Coffee! This month’s writers who will be reading are Lesley Arimah, Isela Xitlali Gomez, Matt Rassussen, Erin Sharkey, and Claire Wahmanholm.


What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, March 22nd at 8:00 p.m.
Where: LynLake Brewery

Brewprov is a monthly comedy show at LynLake Brewery that’s hosted by Sally Foster and Leah Isaacson of local improv act Transvaginal Mesh. Performers at this month’s show will include fellow improv-ers Cross/Weaving, GARY, and Jorts Improv, as well as stand-up comedians A. J. Longabaugh and Joe Rapp.

Minneapolis Book Club: The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Wednesday, March 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Rabbit Hole

The Minneapolis Book Club, Conversations & Cocktails group will be hosting a meetup at the Rabbit Hole this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The book in focus at this meeting is The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Minneapolis Comic Book Club: Locke & Key

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Wednesday, March 23rd at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup for its members at Dreamers Vault Games this Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The books being read for and discussed at this meeting are Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft and Locke & Key: Head Games by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

Co-Op Talk

What: Education, Gaming
When: Thursday, March 24th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly afternoon of drinks and discussion about a topic related to the gaming industry hosted by U of M–based nonprofit Glitch, which “promotes the exploration of video games as a culture, career, and creative practice.” This month Glitch invites you to join them for the discussion “Sex in Video Games” with facilitators Corey Bertelsen and Zack Nelson.

Everyone’s a Critic: Redeployment by Phil Klay

When: Thursday, March 24th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library

The Everyone’s a Critic book club will be hosting a meet-up at the Minneapolis Central Library Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The book in focus at this meeting is Redeployment by Phil Klay.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Nerd Night: Women and Craft Beer

What: Educational
When: Thursday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

The organizers of Nerd Night invite you to “join your fellow nerds for drinks and socializing” at Tin Whiskers Brewing Company as we hear from “a fun lineup of presenters with topics sure to enlighten and entertain.” In honor of Women’s History Month, this month’s Nerd Night “aims to bring together women who work in and/or are passionate about craft beer,” so “come connect with members of Barley’s Angels and the craft brewing and appreciation community!”

Weekly Comics Chat

When: Thursday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Spring Break at Roller Garden: Super Hero Day

When: Friday, March 25th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Roller Garden

The Roller Garden is hosting a “Super Hero Day” as part of its Spring Break at Roller Garden event series. There is no obligation to dress up, “so come as you are,” whether that be in your secret identity wearing your regular clothes, in a superhero T-shirt, or in full costume!

YogaQuest AfterDark with Smitten Kitten

When: Friday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Presented in conjunction with the Smitten Kitten sex toy shop, YogaQuest AfterDark is “a very grown-up take on YogaQuest’s signature narrated yogic adventures” in which “a narrator and certified yoga instructor will guide you through this adult-oriented, sometimes humorous tale of sex and romance between superheroes.”

Saturday Morning Cartoons

And now for something (not) completely different . . . another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Love and Lust Party

The Nerds at Heart Twin Cities Singles Group invites you to “find a hot and heavy romance at a love and lust themed single party” at moto-i this Saturday afternoon. As an attendee, you will have the opportunity to “put on your moves over board games and How You Doin’ trivia featuring famous pop culture objects of desire, light other sexy smarties’ fires during a Swipe Right ice breaker where attendees trade courtship dares, get steamy during a Say Anything quiz featuring geeky deeds done in the name of affection, [and] show your passion with gesture prizes like Doctor and Companion rings, Firefly magnetic poetry sets, and a Pride and Prejudice mug.”

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, March 26th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Gender Jam

What: Meet-Up, LGBTQA+
When: Sunday, March 27th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam “is a safe space for Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Questioning & Intersex teens to hang out and create community.” On the last Sunday of every month, this group will be meeting at Dreamers Vault Games “to play video games, look at comic books, play board/card games, snack, and be together.” Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on our Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) for more information.
