Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 28th through Sunday, April 3rd.

Girly Book Club: The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Monday, March 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Pint Public House

The Minneapolis chapter of the Girly Book Club is hosting a meet-up at The Pint Public House tonight at 7:00 p.m. The book being read for and discussed at this meeting (to which new members are welcome) is The Grownup by Gillian Flynn.

Basic Aikido

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, March 29th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

Geek Physique and the Shuharikan Dojo invite you to come and learn the basics of the Japanese martial art of aikido at this fifth of six classes “designed to improve balance, flexibility, and confidence” in which participants will be taught “holds and control techniques.” The course will be low impact, meaning that there will be “no falls, throws or pins for the first five classes”; the sixth, held April 12 at the Shuharikan Dojo, “will include the option of falls on the dojo’s mats.”

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Iron Designer: Game Design Challenge

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group will also be hosting the Iron Designer: Game Design Challenge this Tuesday night, for which entrants in teams of three will have to design and prototype a game in the time limit of three hours. Specific game elements and the goals that each entry must include will be revealed to teams at the start of the event; some tools and materials will be provided.

YogaQuest Continues

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is Over the Garden Wall, part one.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Saturday, April 2nd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Twin Cities Performing Art Convention

What: Arts
When: Saturday, April 2nd at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Muse Event Center

Pole and Performing Arts connects “our communities together by sharing, expressing, and celebrating the performance arts,” and invites you to join the organization at “Minneapolis’ epic inaugural performing arts event” at the Muse Event Center this Saturday. The eight-hour “festival, vendor fair, and spectacular of the performing arts” will feature “family-friendly day activities” as well as the Shake, Rattle, n’ Pole Star Variety Show after 9:30 p.m.

Team Trivia Challenge

What: Trivia
When: Saturday, April 2nd at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Game Center

The Geek Partnership Society is hosting its annual Team Trivia Challenge this Saturday evening at the Fantasy Flight Game Center. The Team Trivia Challenge is “a game show-style trivia competition for teams, and a fun-filled event for both competitors and spectators alike” in which “teams of up to four members each test their science fiction and fantasy knowledge on a variety of topics ranging from movies to comics to television to science and more.”

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, April 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

Finally, the United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day during the NFL’s off-season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.
