Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 11th through Sunday, April 17th.

Basic Aikido

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Shuharikan Dojo

Geek Physique and the Shuharikan Dojo invite you to come and learn the basics of the Japanese martial art of aikido at this sixth and final class “designed to improve balance, flexibility, and confidence” in which participants will be taught “holds and control techniques.” The course will be low impact, meaning that there will be “no falls, throws or pins for the first five classes”; however, this Tuesday’s “will include the option of falls on the dojo’s mats.”

YogaQuest Continues

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, April 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is Over the Garden Wall, part three.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies, TV
When: Wednesday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, which this month will be provided by YRSJERZY.

Social Science: Fermentation Informational

What: Educational
When: Thursday, April 14th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

Social Science is the themed “adult night” at the Science Museum of Minnesota, “welcoming those 21 and over to grab a drink, enjoy the museum, and experience innovative programming.” The theme this Thursday night will be Fermentational Informational, which invites you to “put beer under the microscope and celebrate the biology, chemistry, and hand-to-mouth physics that delight your senses.” Attendees of this event will receive “a souvenir cup to sample 10 tasty brews from local breweries,” and will also have the opportunity to witness “fermentation demonstrations and presentations by local experts.”

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Volunteer Appreciation Party

What: Parties & Dances
When: Friday, April 15th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In honor of National Volunteer Week, the Geek Partnership Society is hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Party “and we’re inviting all the volunteers across our geeky community as thanks for making the Twin Cities such an awesome geeky place to live. There will be a potluck, prize drawings, and “other things are in the works.”

Come On, Get Happy! (A Goth Yoga Experience)

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Friday, April 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Another “in honor of” event, lifelong The Cure fan Jenny Warrior Princess will lead attendees of Come On, Get Happy! “in a special ‘old school goth’ themed yoga class” that will “sample heavily from the ups and downs in The Cure’s discography” in honor of April, birth month of “one of the greatest icons of mope rock, Robert Smith.”

Lasso of Truth

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, April 15th-Sunday, May 1st
Where: The Playwrights’ Center

Written by Carson Kreutzer, directed by Leah Cooper, and presented in association with Walking Shadow Theatre Company, Lasso of Truth answers the question, “Who is Wonder Woman, and where did she come from?” Exploring “the knotty origin story of our preeminent female superhero. . .this smart, seductive, wild ride features the two women [William Marston, creator of Wonder Woman] lived with in a polyamorous relationship. . .plus a girl in search of answers about her childhood heroine and a guy trying to hold on to his prized first issue.” Starring Stephen Yoakum as the Inventor, Annie Enneking as the Wife, Meghan Kreidler as the Amazon, McKenna Kelly-Eiding as the Girl, and John Riedlinger as the Guy.

ComicCard

What: Convention, Comics, Sport & Fitness
When: Saturday, April 16th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Bloomington VFW

ComicCard events feature “comic books, sports cards, pop culture memorabilia, comic collectibles, and gaming cards.” Special guests at this event will include former Minnesota Twins baseball player Corey Koskie, former wrestling superstar Al Snow, and comic book creators Erik Burnham, Otis Frampton, and Larry Hama.

Open Gaming

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, April 16th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers the Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the United Geeks of Gaming have amassed an impressive library of their own games as well.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, April 16th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Street Fighter V Tournament and Casuals

What: Tournament, Gaming
When: Saturday, April 16th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group and its subgroup Street Fighter White Belts provide “a safe community for learning fighting games,” to which gamers of all ages, genders, and skill levels are invited for “casual matches and friendly training.” The consoles in question this week are the PS4 and the Xbox 360, and games available to play will include Street Fighter V, and Killer Instinct; the Street Fighter V tournament will start at 4:00 p.m.

200th Podcast of Geeks Without God

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, April 16th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Geeks Without God (“a podcast featuring atheist geek comedians Molly Glover, Nick Glover, and Tim Wick”) will be celebrating the 200th episode of their weekly podcast by performing and recording in front of a live audience at the Bryant-Lake Bowl this Saturday night. Guests scheduled to appear at this event include radio host Barb Abney and musician Jeremy Messersmith as well as others still to be announced, so “come celebrate this completely meaningless and arbitrary milestone with them!”

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, April 17th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day during the NFL’s off-season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Travel Themed Party

What: Night Life
When: Sunday, April 17th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: The Local

The Nerds at Heart Twin Cities Singles Group invites you to “tell single life to hit the road with other brainy bachelors and bachelorettes” at The Local this Saturday afternoon. As an attendee, you will have the opportunity to “indulge your wanderlust during a Highway of Love icebreaker where guests map out geeky destinations, take a journey of the heart with other smart singles over board games and Hello World trivia featuring famous globe-trots, pack your bags with prizes like a Star Wars commuter mug, Simpsons postcard set, and vintage Marvel luggage tags, and fuel up with drink specials like the Invisible Jet, the Mystery Machine, and the Hogwarts Express.”
