Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 18th through Sunday, April 24th.

Figure Drawing Salon

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Monday, April 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a Figure Drawing Salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Sexism and Harassment at Professional Events

When: Monday, April 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Dangerous Man Brewing Company

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers and Women Who Code Twin Cities are hosting an event tonight about sexism and harassment at professional events, at which the following topics will be discussed: “How to escape an uncomfortable situation, especially ones with potential to become hostile, recognizing body language to understand when someone else is in distress, understanding consent, how to help someone else out of an uncomfortable or potentially hostile situation, recognizing body language to understand when you might be making someone else uncomfortable, how to escalate issues to organizers and/or authorities, [and] understanding the potential backlash or criticism that may come from reporting issues.” This event is open to all gender identities, as “everyone will benefit from learning more about consent, how to curb unwanted behavior, and how to help others in distress.”

Monthly GM and Player Meetup

The Twin Cities Roleplaying Association (an organization “dedicated to encouraging the playing of roleplaying games in the Twin Cities metro area”) invites you to “learn about new games, chat about RPGs and the industry, announce games, find players and GMs, and make new friends” at its Monthly GM and Player Meetup this Tuesday night. The location of this event is shown only to members of the Twin Cities Roleplaying Association’s Meetup Group, so join and RSVP to this event for more information.

Café Scientifique

When: Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” The topic this month is “Bats, Whitenose Fungus, Chikungunya and Parasite Vectors of Disease” with Dr. Luis Escobar.

GlitchCon Nerdy Video Games and Trivia at Tin Whiskers

What: Trivia, Gaming
When: Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

Tin Whiskers Brewing Company and Glitch invite you to join them “for a nerdy night of video games and trivia as part of the GlitchCon Brewery Tour.” The winning trivia team will receive a pair of tickets to GlitchCon, a two-day digital games festival “featuring games, live music, hands-on workshops, panels, challenges, and interactive sessions” held Friday, April 29th thru Saturday, April 30th. Attendees are also encouraged to “arrive early and stay late to play independently-made games from Minnecade, GlitchCon’s one-stop arcade.”

Photography Club Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Photography Club meets at the Waterbury Center at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss topics related to photography and/or participate in photo shoots. The proposed topic for this month’s meeting is camera maintenance with presenter Rusty Curry.

YogaQuest Continues: Captain America: The First Avenger

When: Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is Captain America: The First Avenger, so join YogaQuest as they gear up “for the new Captain America movie next month by revisiting some of his cinematic adventures.”

Pundamonium: The Twin Cities Pun Slam

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, April 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Club Underground

Pundamonium is a Wall Street Journal–featured “slam-style punmaking contest” that started right here in the Twin Cities and has since spread to locations all across the country, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Madison, Milwaukee, and Seattle. Modern Antics owner and Pundamonium creator Art Allen explains: “One by one, 10 contestants have two minutes each to make puns based on prompts they have received ahead of time. Each contestant is immediately judged by five members of the audience, who have been selected before the show to be judges. They rank each punner on a scale of 1 to 10, often with hilariously long decimals and other commentary. Then they do it again, only this time contestants get their prompts on stage and only have 30 seconds to think and another two minutes to make puns. The top four contestants go head to head in a final pun-off.”

Book Club

The Minneapolis Book Club, Conversations & Cocktails group will be hosting a meet-up this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The book in focus at this meeting is Stone’s Mattress: 9 Tales by Margaret Atwood. The location for this meeting is to be determined.

Lasso of Truth

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, April 21st-Sunday, May 1st
Where: The Playwrights’ Center

Written by Carson Kreutzer, directed by Leah Cooper, and presented in association with Walking Shadow Theatre Company, Lasso of Truth answers the question, “Who is Wonder Woman, and where did she come from?” Exploring “the knotty origin story of our preeminent female superhero. . .this smart, seductive, wild ride features the two women [William Marston, creator of Wonder Woman] lived with in a polyamorous relationship. . .plus a girl in search of answers about her childhood heroine and a guy trying to hold on to his prized first issue.” Starring Stephen Yoakum as the Inventor, Annie Enneking as the Wife, Meghan Kreidler as the Amazon, McKenna Kelly-Eiding as the Girl, and John Riedlinger as the Guy.

Co-Op Talk

When: Thursday, April 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly afternoon of drinks and discussion about a topic related to the gaming industry hosted by U of M–based nonprofit Glitch, which “promotes the exploration of video games as a culture, career, and creative practice.” This month Glitch invites you to join them for the discussion “Villains We Love to Hate” with facilitators Ryan Jaremczuk and Thomas Cotteleer.

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics!

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Comics
When: Thursday, April 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Cahoots Coffee Bar

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Cahoots Coffee Bar in St. Paul on the third Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Club Haus: Game of Thrones Night

When: Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

Bauhaus Brew Labs asks all “Lords and Ladies, Willings and Warts” to “gather your banners and flock to Bauhaus Brew Labs by foot, ship, horse, or Hodor for a night of sigil making and Game of Thrones trivia!” All of the supplies that will be needed “to craft your very own house sigil and shield” will be provided, “including Valyrian steel scissors and Weirwood cardstock paper,” as well as an hour of Game of Thrones themed team trivia designed to test even those “wiser than Maester Aemon, better read than Samwell Tarly, [and] more cunning than the Queen of Thorns.”

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Nerd Night: Average Person Mathlympics

What: Educational, Trivia
When: Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

The organizers of Nerd Night invite you to “join your fellow nerds for drinks and socializing” at Tin Whiskers Brewing Company as we hear from “a fun lineup of presenters with topics sure to enlighten and entertain.” In honor of Mathematics Awareness Month, this month’s Nerd Night is “hosting a math competition for the everyday beer drinker.”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

GlitchCon Brewery Tour: Bauhaus Brew Labs

When: Friday, April 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

The second stop on the GlitchCon Brewery Tour is Bauhaus Brew Labs in Minneapolis, where attendees will have another opportunity to enjoy “a nerdy night of video games and trivia as part of the GlitchCon Brewery Tour.” The winning trivia team will again receive a pair of tickets to GlitchCon, a two-day digital games festival “featuring games, live music, hands-on workshops, panels, challenges, and interactive sessions” held Friday, April 29th-Saturday, April 30th, and attendees are again encouraged to “arrive early and stay late to play independently-made games from Minnecade, GlitchCon’s one-stop arcade.”

ReCon

When: Saturday, April 23rd at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group invites you to the Minnesota Miniatures Gaming Association’s event ReCon, their “quarterly gathering of miniatures gamers” for “games run by members ranging from historical ancients, horse and musket era, current and far future events, and fantasy.” This event is open to the public and “no prior game skill or rules knowledge is required.”

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, April 23rd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Open Studio

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Saturday, April 23rd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Center for Book Arts

In addition to the Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics! event on Thursday (listed above), the Cartoonists Conspiracy will also be hosting an open studio event this week at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Fellow conspirators are encouraged to bring concepts or works in progress to work on and get ideas or feedback and to network and engage in “general geek talk.” Coffee, tea, beer, wine, and food will be available at this event.

Shakes-Beer’s Birthday

What: Trivia, Theater
When: Saturday, April 23rd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: NorthGate Brewing

NorthGate Brewing in Minneapolis invites you to celebrate the Bard’s birthday with “themed brews, a Shakespearean spelling bee. . .trivia. . .and more!” Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet members of the Great River Shakespeare Festival “as they up the ante on our trivia challenge and present info on more upcoming productions” and members of Theatre Coup d’Etat, who will be providing “stagings of some of the most famous Shakespearean duels.”

Geek Girl Brunch: Star Wars

What: Meet-Up, Movies & TV
When: Sunday, April 24th at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Seventh Street Social

Geek Girl Brunch Twin Cities invites you to the Seventh Street Social in St. Paul to join them “for brunch and all things Star Wars.” Attending this event in costume is optional, and if you do decide to do so, “feel free to dress up in any costume of your choosing,” but know that there will be “a Leia bun-off with prizes.”

Gender Jam

What: Meet-Up, LGBTQA+
When: Sunday, April 24th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam “is a safe space for Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Questioning & Intersex teens to hang out and create community.” On the last Sunday of every month, this group will be meeting at Dreamers Vault Games “to play video games, look at comic books, play board/card games, snack, and be together.” Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on our Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) for more information.

GlitchCon Brewery Tour: Lake Monster Brewing

Where: Lake Monster Brewing
