Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 25th through Sunday, May 1st.

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Nerd Nite: Spring Awakening

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Honey

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you to attend their “live version of the Discovery Channel” at Honey, an event at which three nerds give a presentation on a topic of their choice in order to “satisfy your endless curiosity.” This month’s talks will include “Semi Trucks: Bringin’ It Since 1899” by Atul Patel, “Tiny Houses: What the Heck?” by Joel (TinyJ), and “The ZVEX Candela VibroPhase: A Guitar Sound Effect” by Zachary Vex.

YogaQuest Continues: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so join YogaQuest as they gear up “for the new Captain America movie next month by revisiting some of his cinematic adventures.”

555 Reads

What: Reading, Books
When: Tuesday, April 26th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Five Watt Coffee

At 555 Reads, five writers have five minutes to read from their work at Five Watt Coffee! This month’s writers who will be reading are Mary Moore Easter, Su Hwang, Brain Laidlaw, Irna Landrum, and Peter Pearson.

Minneapolis Comic Book Club: Fables

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Wednesday, April 27th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup for its members at Dreamers Vault Games this Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The books being read for and discussed at this meeting are Fables: Legends in Exile and Fables: Animal Farm by Bill Willingham.

Lasso of Truth

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, April 28th-Sunday, May 1st
Where: The Playwrights’ Center

Written by Carson Kreutzer, directed by Leah Cooper, and presented in association with Walking Shadow Theatre Company, Lasso of Truth answers the question, “Who is Wonder Woman, and where did she come from?” Exploring “the knotty origin story of our preeminent female superhero. . .this smart, seductive, wild ride features the two women [William Marston, creator of Wonder Woman] lived with in a polyamorous relationship. . .plus a girl in search of answers about her childhood heroine and a guy trying to hold on to his prized first issue.” Starring Stephen Yoakum as the Inventor, Annie Enneking as the Wife, Meghan Kreidler as the Amazon, McKenna Kelly-Eiding as the Girl, and John Riedlinger as the Guy.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

GlitchCon

What: Convention, Gaming
When: Friday, April 29th-Saturday, April 30th
Where: McNamara Alumni Center

“Bringing together makers, doers, and thinkers in digital games,” GlitchCon is “a weekend-long event filled with workshops, panels, [and] tournaments, plus numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth for members within the community.” In addition to all of the above, attendees of this event will also be able to “jump in and play up-and-coming indie games of all genres and chat directly with their creators” in the MinneCade, “your one-stop arcade” where no coins are necessary.

Lightsaber Workshop

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Saturday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Mac Muscle and Conditioning

The Grey Order Lightsaber Fitness Academy, whose workshops combine “active body weight training with real sword technique,” is hosting a Lightsaber Workshop at Mac Muscle and Conditioning this Saturday morning. So, whether you want to use the Force “to help the masses or to bend them to your will,” come to this class that promises to be “so much fun you’ll forget you’re working out.”

International Tabletop Day Open Gaming

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, April 30th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group is hosting a special edition of their Open Gaming sessions this Saturday in honor of International Tabletop Day, “a day to spread the fun and joy of games around the world.” As is the case with their regular Open Gaming sessions, gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the United Geeks of Gaming have amassed an impressive library of their own games as well.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, April 30th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Ghostbusters Pinball Launch Party

What: Meet-Up, Gaming, Movies
When: Saturday, April 30th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Company

Minnesota Pinball is hosting a Ghostbusters Pinball Launch Party at Surly Brewing Company this Saturday night that will feature four Ghostbusters pinball machines on free play, as well as several other machines including “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Indiana Jones, [and] Star Trek: The Next Generation,” among others. This event also boasts an appearance by Ernie (Winston Zeddemore) Hudson, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, An Ecto-1 replica and other replica props, a live DJ, a Photo Booth, a silent auction, and more!

The Rocky Horror Game of Thrones Show

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, April 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. At this month’s performance, the cast members will be wearing Game of Thrones costumes, “making Game of Thrones jokes, welcoming special guests Kittenbritches with Game of Thrones-themed comedy, and just generally getting our Game of Thrones geek on.”
