Books & Bars: The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, May 3rd at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar & Hall

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins.

Geeks Read

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, May 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s book club, Geeks Read, explores books that are important to the history of the science-fiction, fantasy, and horror genres or to “our own personal histories.” The club meets on the first Tuesday of every month and provides a potluck of treats to accompany (and fuel) discussion, so “feel free to bring something tasty!”

YogaQuest Continues: The Avengers: Age of Ultron

When: Tuesday, May 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is The Avengers: Age of Ultron, so join YogaQuest as they gear up “for the new Captain America movie next month by revisiting some of his cinematic adventures.”

Geek Girl Brunch: May the Fourth Be With You

What: Meet-Up, Movies, TV
When: Wednesday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: JetSet

Geek Girl Brunch Twin Cities invites you to JetSet Bar to join them for “cocktails and other libations, [to] dance if [you] want to, [and to] hang out and obsess over Star Wars and other geeky things.”

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics!

What: Meet-Up, Art, Comics
When: Thursday, May 5th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Diamonds Coffee Shop

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Diamonds Coffee Shoppe in Minneapolis on the first Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

One-Shot Comics: Red Rosa by Kate Evans

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

The One-Shot Comics book club (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) will be discussing Red Rosa by Kate Evans at its meeting this month, which will be held at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

AniMinneapolis

What: Convention, Anime
When: Friday, May 6th—Sunday, May 8th
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

AniMinneapolis is “an epic three-day celebration of anime, video games, and music in Minneapolis” that includes anime screenings, a charity auction, concerts, Dante’s Fabulous Date Auction, an exhibit hall, gaming (including Pachinko Fever, tabletop gaming, and video games), karaoke, a masquerade, nightly dances (including the Formal Fantasy Cosplay Ball), and, of course, panels.

Guests at this year’s convention will include Greg Ayres (voice actor on Chrono Crusade, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Ouran High School Host Club); D. C. Douglas (voice actor in Capcom Versus Marvel 3 and the Mass Effect and Resident Evil series); Chuck Huber (voice actor on Dragon Ball ZFull Metal Alchemist, andOne Piece); Lewis “Linkara” Lovhaug (comic-book reviewer for the website That Guy With the Glasses and host of the Atop the Fourth Wall show); Emily Neves (voice actor on Angel Beats and Space Pirate Captain Harlock); and John Stocker (voice actor on Care Bears, Super Mario Brothers, and X-Men).

Wizard World Minneapolis

What: Convention
When: Friday, May 6th—Sunday, May 8th
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

The Wizard World Comic Con returns to Minneapolis for a third time this weekend, bringing with it special guests including Neal Adams, Billy Boyd, Lou Ferrigno, Jason David Frank, Dan Jurgens, James Marsters, David Ramsey, Jeremy Shada, Jewel Staite, Robin Lord Taylor, and more.

Free Comic Book Day

What: Comics
When: Saturday, May 7th
Where: Many Locations

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual retailer holiday when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. Many comic book stores throughout the Twin Cities area and greater Minnesota are participating. Use the Sore Locator on the Free Comic Book Day website to find which stores near you will have FCBD events, bargains, and of course, free comic books!

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Saturday, May 7th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Teen Lit Con

What: Convention, Books
When: Saturday, May 7th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Henry Sibley High School

The Twin Cities Teen Lit Con “is where authors, books, teens and fun collide.” Anyone who enjoys young-adult literature will have the opportunity “to connect with their favorite authors, explore other aspects of being a part of a reading community and attend workshops for writers.”

Authors in attendance will include Leigh Bardugo, S. A. Bodeen, John Coy, Pete Hautman, Faith Erin Hicks, Dawn Klehr, Jason Reynolds, Monica Ropal, Neal Shusterman, and Derek E. Sullivan.

Riddle Room 2 Year Anniversary and Expansion Launch Party

What: Parties & Dances, Gaming
When: Saturday, May 7th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Riddle Room

Modern Antics owner and Pundamonium creator Art Allen, who is also the creator of the Riddle Room, is celebrating two years of the Riddle Room’s existence by “opening a gorgeous new expansion adjacent to the Starship space!” This expansion includes four new rooms “that all feature a reimagining of our first game, Bunker, plus an expanded game lounge with more games and a bigger retail space with games, puzzles, and books in addition to the smattering of novelties and best collection of comedy records in town.”

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, May 8th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day during the NFL’s off-season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities

When: Sunday, May 8th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: 331 Club

Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities is our very own branch of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, “a rule breaking cocktail of dames, drinking, and drawing” that has become “the world’s premier alt.drawing movement.” Founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, it has since spread to over 100 cities around the world “from Akron to Zagreb,” including Minneapolis. Elektra Cute—assistant director of the Playful Peacock Showgirl Academy, producer of and performer with Black Hearts Burlesque, producer of the Minneapolis Burlesque Festival, and host of Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities—invites you to join her at the 331 Club for this Sunday’s session of drawing “glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality.”

The underground performer posing this month will be “The Dean of Tease” Gina Louise, “producer of the Minneapolis Burlesque Festival, a founding member of Lili’s Burlesque, and a delight to behold!” At the end of the event, attendees can submit their artwork to be judged by Gina and Elektra; the artists of their favorite submissions will receive fabulous prizes from sponsors of Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities, including Blick Art Materials, Fast Mary’s (Minneapolis-based maker of “bloody Mary enhancers“), and the Fox Den Salon (“your Uptown Minneapolis cool hair shop“), among others.

Medieval Court Dance Practice

When: Sunday, May 8th at 3:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Barony of Nordskogen (the Minneapolis chapter of the Society of Creative Anachronism) has partnered with the Geek Partnership Society “to make their biweekly medieval court dance practices a Geek Physique event.” This practice will be held this Sunday at the Waterbury Center at 3:30 p.m. and will be taught by Mistress Rosanore of Redthorn.
