Feminist Comic Book Club

What: Meet-Up, Comics

Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store invites you to attend the first meeting of its Feminist Comic Book Club, where they will be discussing Thor: The Goddess of Thunder by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman.

Books & Bars: The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Indeed Brewing Company

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins.

East St. Paul Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Davanni’s

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup Group is hosting a meet-up for speculative fiction writers at the Davanni’s in East St. Paul. The topic of this month’s meeting is “brainstorming fresh and new ideas to consider discussing at future meetups.”

YogaQuest Continues: Kick-Ass

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is Kick-Ass.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies, TV
When: Wednesday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, which this month will be provided by STAG.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Edutainment Video Discussion: Economics

What: Screening, Educational
When: Friday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Edutainment Video Discussion is an event series that gathers people together to watch “curated collections of videos on various topics,” with discussion breaks during the evening to talk about what’s being shown. This month’s topic is economics.

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Friday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Read the Book/See the Movie

What: Meet-Up, Books, Screening, Movies
When: Friday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m.

The Geek Partnership Society’s Read the Book/See the Movie club meets on the second Friday of every month to “expand our reading and film horizons by comparing and contrasting films to their source material.” The location for this event rotates between the Waterbury Center and club member’s homes, so email the organizers of this event at [email protected] to learn the location of this month’s meet-up and for more information about the book and movie featured.

Tsuinshi Anime Showing

What: Screening, Anime
When: Friday, May 13th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

In addition to Anime Detour (the annual convention for fans of Japanese animation, manga, video games, and culture), Anime Twin Cities is also working to provide monthly events for fans of anime and manga in the Twin Cities. One such event is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which they have joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” and at which they will be showing various anime movies and series.

MSP ComiCon

What: Convention
When: Saturday, May 14th–Sunday, May 15th
Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds

Visit with writers and artists, shop for art and comic books, visit the NiCoral Arkham Carnival, and more at the Midwest Comic Book Association’s spring convention (formerly known as SpringCon). This year’s guests include Brian Augustyn, Patrick Gleason, Christopher Jones, Dan Jurgens, Joseph Michael Linsner, Doug Mahnke, Trina Robbins, and Bill Willingham, and exhibitors include Encore Software, the MN Society of Costumers, MN Superheroes United, among many others. Costumes are encouraged, and the event is open to all ages.

Twin Cities Geek will have a table at MSP ComiCon both days, so stop by to say hello, pick up a TCG button, and have your geek photo taken in our “photo booth”!

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, May 14th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Doctor Who Meetup: The Tomb of the Cybermen

What: Screening, TV
When: Saturday, May 14th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup Group will be screening The Tomb of the Cybermen this Saturday at the Parkway Theater. A representative from local Doctor Who convention CONsole Room will also be on hand to talk about the con, which takes place June 3–5, 2016.
