Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 30th through Sunday, June 5th.

Game Designer Session

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Girly Book Club: The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minneapolis chapter of the Girly Book Club is hosting a meet-up at tonight at 7:00 p.m. The book being read for and discussed at this meeting (to which new members are welcome) is The Good Girl by Mary Kubica.

YogaQuest Continues

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Drink For a Cause @ Northgate Brewing

What: Fundraiser
When: Wednesday, June 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Northgate Brewing

Northgate Brewing will be hosting a fundraiser for the Geek Partnership Society this Wednesday night. In addition to Northgate Brewing’s beverages, the Gastrotruck food truck will also be on site, and there will be “raffle prizes, GPS merchandise for sale, [and] tickets for the Pirate Cruise for sale.”

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics!

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Comics
When: Thursday, June 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Diamonds Coffee Shop

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Diamonds Coffee Shoppe in Minneapolis on the first Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Crafts
When: Thursday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

One-Shot Comics: The Divine

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

The One-Shot Comics book club (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) will be discussing The Divine by Boaz Lavie, Asaf Hanuka, and Tomer Hanuka at its meeting this month, which will be held at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! [and] Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

2D Con 2016

What: Convention, Gaming
When: Friday, June 3rd-Sunday, June 5th
Where: Doubletree Bloomington Minneapolis South Hotel

2D Con is “an all inclusive charitable gaming event held every spring in celebration of the gaming community…featuring tournaments, live music, speedrunning, cosplay and more.” Guests presents at the convention will include Adam Leonhardt and John Wahl (creators of, Andrew Reiner and Wade Wojcik of Game Informer, Jack Gardner (official editor of Extra Life, “a non-profit organization that raises money through 24 hour video game marathons to treat sick and injured kids”), and more.

CONsole Room 2016

What: Convention, TV
When: Friday, June 3rd-Sunday, June 5th
Where: Hilton Minneapolis/Bloomington

CONsole Room is “THE Twin Cities Doctor Who convention. . .an annual gathering place for enthusiasts of Doctor Who in Minneapolis/St. Paul.” Guests of Honor at this year’s convention include Dominic Glynn, Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, and Anneke Wills.

Final Frontier

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 3rd-Sunday, June 5th
Where: The Phoenix Theatre

Gadfly Theatre Productions is “an inclusive queer [and] feminist organization hoping to highlight issues and showcase stories important to those communities in a way that everyone can relate [to] with uniquely universal plays anyone will love.” The theme of their Final Frontier Festival this year is “Heroes and Villains,” which they will be using to “examine what [makes] a hero or a villain through the campy lens of geektastic mediums like comic books and video games and our signature queer, feminist lens.”

Open Gaming

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers the Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the United Geeks of Gaming have amassed an impressive library of their own games as well.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Lit Crawl MN: Graphic Novel Battle Royale!

What: Arts, Comics
When: Saturday, June 4th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

The Rain Taxi Review of Books invites you to crawl over to the Bryant-Lake Bowl “to catch some of the area’s best cartoonists present their latest work in round-robin fashion.” Attendees of this event will then “get to vote as to which presenter gets our coveted ‘head on fire’ prize!”

Schrodinger’s Apocalypse

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Schrodinger’s Apocalypse is “a comedy about the end of the world. . .or is it?” in which “Peter, George, and Dawn are trapped in a bunker waiting out the zombie apocalypse. The only problem is they don’t know if it’s over yet. What they do know is they are getting really tired of each other.” Written by Tim Wick, directed by Bill Stiteler, and starring Dawn Krosnowski, Tim Uren, and John Zeiler, admission to this event is $15 or $12 with a Fringe button or CONvergence badge.

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, June 5th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day during the NFL’s off-season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.
