Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 20th through Sunday, June 26th.

Tabletop Tuesdays

What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, June 21st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Glitch (a nonprofit that “promotes the exploration of digital games as a culture, career, and creative practice) invites you to join them “for a casual night of board games” at GlitchHQ on the first and third Tuesday of every month, where you will be able to “play games from our tabletop library or bring your favorite to share with your friends and the community.” Players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, and if you aren’t sure how to play a particular game, Glitch’s “knowledgable organizers can teach you the basics.”

Monthly GM and Player Meetup

The Twin Cities Roleplaying Association (an organization “dedicated to encouraging the playing of roleplaying games in the Twin Cities metro area”) invites you to “learn about new games, chat about RPGs and the industry, announce games, find players and GMs, and make new friends” at its Monthly GM and Player Meetup on Tuesday night. The location of this event is shown only to members of the Twin Cities Roleplaying Association’s Meetup Group, so join and RSVP for more information.

The Not-So-Silent Planet: A Speculative Open-Mic

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The featured performer for this month’s session is Michael Merriam; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

Photography Club Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Arts
When: Tuesday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Photography Club meets at the Waterbury Center at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss topics related to photography and/or participate in photo shoots. The suggested topic for this month’s meeting is “Camera Maintenance” with presenter Rusty Curry.

YogaQuest Continues: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is the conclusion to their The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time series.

Rob Callahan Reads

What: Books, Author Readings
When: Wednesday, June 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: DreamHaven Books and Comics

DreamHaven Books and SF Minnesota, a “multicultural speculative fiction organization,” present their monthly Speculations reading. June’s reader is Rob Callahan, journalist, Twin Cities Geek contributor, and cohost of Your Geek Show. He will be reading from his novel Duplicity, “the story of an underachieving young professional temping for the Devil who’s accidentally promoted to project manager over the impending apocalypse.”

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia, TV
When: Wednesday, June 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

The producers of TC Trek Trivia invite you and your companions to explore the strange new world of Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to Doctor Who! Following the tried-and-true format of TC Trek Trivia, Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays will consist of five rounds: Classic Who (focusing on the first eight Doctors), Jelly Babies (for which you will be asked to identify the image), Contemporary Who (Ninth Doctor forward), Don’t Blink (for which you will be asked to complete the quote), and Bad Wolf (focusing on companions and villains).

Minneapolis Comic Book Club: Locke & Key

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Wednesday, June 22nd at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup for its members at Dreamers Vault Games this Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The group will be discussing Locke and Key: Clockworks and Locke and Key: Alpha & Omega by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

Movie Night in the Park: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, June 22nd at dusk (around 9:00 p.m.)
Where: Sanburnol Park, Spring Lake Park, MN

The Spring Lake Park Lions are hosting a free movie night at Sanburnol Park, and the movie is The Force Awakens! Families are welcome, and popcorn will be available for $1. Bring your own chair.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Play/Test

What: Play Test, Gaming
When: Friday, June 24th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Play/Test is a weekly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers “the opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At Play/Test, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, June 25th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Burnsville Fairy Festival

What: Festivals
When: Saturday, June 25th, 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
Where: Terrace Oaks West Park, Burnsville

The first-ever Burnsville Fairy Festival is coming this weekend to celebrate International Fairy Day and the summer solstice. Admission is free, and activities include face painting, games, music, coloring contests, and more.

Open Studio

What: Meet-Up, Arts, Comics
When: Saturday, June 25th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Center for Book Arts

The Cartoonists Conspiracy will be hosting an open studio event this week at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Fellow conspirators are encouraged to bring concepts or works in progress to work on and get ideas or feedback and to network and engage in “general geek talk.” Coffee, tea, beer, wine, and food will be available at this event.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 25th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Gender Jam

What: Meet-Up, LGBTQA+
When: Sunday, June 26th at 12:45 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam “is a safe space for Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Questioning & Intersex teens to hang out and create community” that meets on the last Sunday of every month. You can meet up with the group this Sunday at Dreamers Vault Games “to play video games, look at comic books, play board/card games, snack, and be together.” Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on our Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) for more information.
