Girly Book Club: The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens
What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Monday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub
The Minneapolis chapter of the Girly Book Club is hosting a meet-up at tonight at Kieran’s Irish Pub. The book being read for and discussed at this meeting (to which new members are welcome) is The Life We Bury by local author Allen Eskens, who will also be in attendance and available “for questions and discussion of the book.”
Game Designer Session
What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Tuesday, June 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center
The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”
YogaQuest Continues
What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, June 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio
YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”
555 Reads
What: Meet-Up, Books
When: Tuesday, June 28th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Five Watt Coffee
At 555 Reads, five writers have five minutes to read from their work at Five Watt Coffee! This month’s writers who will be reading are Shannon Gibney, Carolyn Holbrook, Julia Marley, Lara Mimosa Montes, and Max Ross.
CONvergence
What: Convention, Science Fiction, Fantasy
When: Thursday, June 30th–Sunday, July 3rd
Where: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Bloomington – Minneapolis South
CONvergence is an annual four-day convention for “fans of science fiction and fantasy in all media”—the “premiere event of our kind in the upper Midwest.” Each year, CONvergence has a different theme; the theme of this year’s convention is “‘. . .And how do we GET there?’, a celebration of the great vehicles and transport of science fiction and fantasy.” Special guests include Amal El-Mohtar, Amy Shira Teitel, Cam Banks, Christopher Jones, Daren Dochterman, Greg Weisman, Joseph Scrimshaw, Khary Payton, Mark Oshiro, Ytasha Womack, and more.
Geek Chic Movies & Knits
What: Meet-Up, Crafts, Screening, Movies
When: Thursday, June 30th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe
The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, geeky shows and movies, and knitting (and crocheting, and spinning, and so on)!” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, unless you contribute a food item for their “always delicious” pot luck, in which case the fee will be waived. Dietary restrictions are seen as “an exciting culinary challenge.”
Weekly Comics Chat
What: Meet-Up, Comics
When: Thursday, June 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub
The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.
Open Gaming
What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Saturday, July 2nd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center
The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers their Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the United Geeks of Gaming have amassed an impressive library of their own games as well.
Saturday Morning Cartoons
What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, July 2nd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio
Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”
RPG Sunday Game Day
What: Meet-Up, Gaming
When: Sunday, July 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Waterbury Center
The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day during the NFL’s off-season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.
