Feminist Comic Book Club: The Infinite Loop

The Feminist Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup at Mischief Toy Store this Tuesday evening. The comic book being read for and discussed at this meeting is The Infinite Loop by Pierrick Colinet and Elsa Charretier.

Game Designer Session

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, July 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

YogaQuest Continues: Doctor Who: “Blink”

Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.” This week’s theme is Doctor Who: “Blink”

Minneapolis Book Club: Euphoria by Lily King

When: Wednesday, July 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bad Weather Brewing Company

The Minneapolis Book Club, Conversations & Cocktails group will be hosting a meetup on Wednesday night at Bad Weather Brewing Company in St. Paul at 7:00 p.m. The book in focus at this meeting is Euphoria by Lily King.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

When: Wednesday, July 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

The producers of TC Trek Trivia invite you and your companions to explore the strange new world of Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to Doctor Who! Following the tried-and-true format of TC Trek Trivia, Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays consists of five rounds: Day of the Doctor (focusing on the Doctors); Jelly Babies (for which you will be asked to identify the image); Hello, Sweetie (focusing on the companions and other allies of the Doctors); Don’t Blink (for which you will be asked to complete the quote); and Exterminate (focusing on villains). Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Who” and is frequently followed by live music, which this month will be provided by Autumn.

Minneapolis Comic Book Club: Descender

When: Wednesday, July 27th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup for its members at Dreamers Vault Games this Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The group will be discussing Descender: Tin Stars and Descender: Machine Moon by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen.

Movie Night in the Park: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

What: Screening, Movies
When: Wednesday, July 27th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Sanburnol Park in Spring Lake Park, MN

The Spring Lake Park Lions are hosting a free movie night at Sanburnol Park, and the movie is The Force Awakens! Families are welcome, and popcorn will be available for $1. Bring your own chair.

Geek Chic Movies & Knits Potluck Night

What: Meetup, Crafts, Screening, Movies
When: Thursday, July 28th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, knitting (and crocheting!), and a screening of one of our favorite shows or movies” The cost of attending this event is $5.00, or free for StevenBe members “and anyone who contributes to the potluck.”

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, July 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, July 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, July 30th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Saturday Morning Cartoons with the Chuck Jones Family

What: Screening, TV
When: Saturday, July 30th at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

The Minnesota History Center invites you to “start your Saturday morning watching Looney Tunes cartoons and other Chuck Jones animation creations with two of Jones’ grandchildren, Valerie and Craig Kausen, who will share stories of their grandfather’s work!” This event is expected to last until 12:00 p.m.; a related event will also be held at the Minnesota History Center at 1:30 p.m. (see “ACME Inventions” below).

Open Gaming: Android: Netrunner

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Saturday, July 30th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store invites you to play the card game Android: Netrunner at “a casual event for those who want to have fun playing . . . in a welcoming environment.” If you’ve never played the game before, this event will provide an excellent opportunity for you to learn, as there will be a teacher on site who “can go through the rules with you and help [you] through your first few games.”

Open Studio

When: Saturday, July 30th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Center for Book Arts

The Cartoonists Conspiracy will be hosting an open studio event this week at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Fellow conspirators are encouraged to bring concepts or works in progress to work on and get ideas or feedback and to network and engage in “general geek talk.” Coffee, tea, beer, wine, and food will be available at this event.

ACME Inventions: A Chuck Jones Center for Creativity Workshop

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Saturday, July 30th at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

At this event, offered in conjunction with the current Minnesota History Center exhibit “What’s Up Doc? The Animation Art of Chuck Jones” as well as the “Saturday Morning Cartoons with the Chuck Jones Family” event listed above, “participants will explore their creativity by using recycled materials to create a wide variety of ‘ACME Inventions,’ as seen in numerous cartoons created by animator Chuck Jones.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Release Party

When: Saturday, July 30th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: NorthGate Brewing

Northgate Brewing will be hosting a release party for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (the eighth official installment in the Harry Potter book series) this Saturday. This free event of family-friendly activities will include the a costume contest, a Harry Potter photo booth (with “all the props you’d expect and more”), OWLS (Harry Potter trivia), a Quidditch beer pong tournament, Wizards Chess (a human-sized chess board), and food from the Classic Yum and Vito Lucco food trucks.

Harry Potter Countdown to Midnight Party

When: Saturday, July 30th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Barnes & Noble stores

This more kid-friendly party leading up to the midnight release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will feature “a special Muggle Wall where customers can share their favorite memories of Harry Potter as well as amazing giveaways and fun activities!” Check out the Barnes & Noble website to find your local store and see how it’s participating.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

The Bit Run

What: Sport & Fitness, Gaming
When: Sunday, July 31st at 7:00 a.m.
Where: Richfield Veterans Park

The Bit Run is “the first ever video game themed run,” at which you can “dress up as your favorite video game, anime, or sci-fi character, complete video game challenges, and play games . . . from local developers.” The run will consist of two distances (4K or 8K) along which “you can run or walk . . . play gaming challenges (two in the 4K, three in the 8K), and help save the world by reducing your carbon footprint.”

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, LGBTQA+
When: Sunday, July 31st at 12:45 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam “is a safe space for Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Questioning & Intersex teens to hang out and create community” that meets on the last Sunday of every month. You can meet up with the group this Sunday at Dreamers Vault Games “to play video games, look at comic books, play board/card games, snack, and be together.” Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on the Twin Cities Geek Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) for more information.
