Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, August 1st through Sunday, August 7th.

Tabletop Tuesdays

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, August 2nd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Glitch (a nonprofit that “promotes the exploration of digital games as a culture, career, and creative practice) invites you to join them “for a casual night of board games” at GlitchHQ on the first and third Tuesday of every month, where you will be able to “play games from our tabletop library or bring your favorite to share with your friends and the community.” Players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, and if you aren’t sure how to play a particular game, Glitch’s “knowledgeable organizers can teach you the basics.”

Kotatsu

What: Meetup, Anime
When: Tuesday, August 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Davanni’s in St. Paul

Kotatsu is a monthly open hangout night presented by Anime Twin Cities (the parent organization of the Anime Detour convention) to which you are invited to bring games, cards, knitting, writing, “or any other hobby that suits you.” You are also more than welcome to “just bring yourself and join us around a table for good company and good conversation.” This is a public gathering being held at the Davanni’s in St. Paul this month; attendees are encouraged to “look for the host wearing a blue armband with the ATC logo” upon arrival.

YogaQuest

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Social Science: Press Play

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Thursday, August 4th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

Social Science is the themed “adult night” at the Science Museum of Minnesota, “welcoming those 21 and over to grab a drink, enjoy the museum, and experience innovative programming.” The theme this Thursday night will be Press Play, which invites you to “turn up the fun and discover how games of chance, skill, and strategy keep us creative, connected, and constantly innovating.” Participating exhibitors include Glitch, Fantasy Flight Games, YogaQuest, Level Up Games, and more.

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics!

What: Meetup, Arts, Comics
When: Thursday, August 4th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Diamonds Coffee Shop

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Diamonds Coffee Shoppe in Minneapolis on the first Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, August 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, August 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comics Club’s Facebook group; individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

AirD&D

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, August 5th at 8:30 p.m.; Sunday August 7th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Rarig Center at the University of Minnesota

Written by Brian Scot Johnson and Michael Krefting and directed by Becci Schmidt, AirD&D tells the tale of Brett and Cassandra, who—”in need of some extra cash”—turn to Airbnb. “Their new house guest, Wells, is a traveling Dungeon Master who helps people fix their relationships . . . with roleplaying.” Starring Philip Skretvedt as Brett, Tamara Koltes as Cassandra, and Siarde Evans as Wells.

Weekend of Gaming

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, August 5th-Sunday, August 7th
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group is hosting a Weekend of Gaming this Friday through Sunday, where you can “come and spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are invited to bring their own “favorite board, card, miniature, and role playing games.”

AfreakCON

What: Convention
When: Saturday, August 6th–Sunday, August 7th
Where: ARTS-Us

This Saturday and Sunday, ARTS-Us will be hosting a facilitating AfreakCON, a convention highlighting “those of color who support, create, and have learned through sci-fi and comic book universes.” Activities available to attendees of this event will include panels, screenings, workshops, and “meet and greets of local black comic book authors and illustrators.”

Blizzard World Minneapolis ComiCon

What: Convention
When: Saturday, August 6th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: MTS Charter Schools

MTS Charter Schools is hosting the Blizzard World ComiCon this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The convention will feature “comic books, action figures, games, toys, and more,” including “local creators and prize giveaways!” Admission to this event is $3 for kids (ages 11 to 17) and $4 for adults, or free if you attend in a costume. Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, August 6th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Post-CON, Pre-Fest Fundraiser Sale

What: Fundraiser
When: Saturday, August 6th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Pearl Park

The Minnesota Society of Costumers will be hosting their summer sale this Saturday in Pearl Park. “With convention season in full swing and fest just around the corner, here’s your chance to snag (or sell) some great costume pieces to complete that outfit you’ve been working on.”

Ice Cream Social

What: Ice Cream Social
When: Saturday, August 6th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Cherokee Regional Park

The Geek Partnership Society invites “all members, partner members, and local geeks to come out to the Phalen Park picnic shelter for the annual ice cream get together.” Ice cream and basic toppings will be provided (as well as some park-appropriate games), but “feel free to bring homemade toppings—there may even be a contest!”

International Sailor Moon Day

What: Meetup, Anime
When: Saturday, August 6th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games

In honor of International Sailor Moon Day, Level Up Games will be hosting a celebration this Saturday, featuring “Sailor Moon series viewing, card games/trades . . . and a costume contest at 2:00 p.m. for those willing to go all out!”

Submit It Now! Fantasy and Science Fiction Short Stories

What: Educational, Books
When: Saturday, August 6th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Loft Literary Center

In this class held at the Loft Literary Center, aspiring authors “will create and receive feedback on a polished, formatted story submission, a cover letter, an author bio, an author photo, a query letter, submission tracking documents, [and] a Top 10 list of publication markets for their story.” In order to attend this class, you must have a completed sci-fi, fantasy, or horror short story that you want to see published, Internet access, and a word-processing program. The cost of this class is $140 for general attendees, $126 for members of the Loft, and $98 for those qualifying for low-income status.

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Sunday, August 7th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day during the NFL’s off-season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Test Run

When: Sunday, August 7th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Finally, Glitch invites to to “come out and celebrate the accomplishments of the talented individuals in the Summer ’16 cohort of [our] Immersion Program . . . a four-week intensive course that embeds classrooms in digital game companies, public institutions, and universities.” Attendees will have the opportunity to “watch teams present their capstone projects to a panel of guest judges, play the game demos firsthand, and discover the creative and experimental ideas these emerging creators are working on.”
