Summer Music & Movies: The Honeydogs with Hairspray

What: Music, Screening, Movies
When: Monday, August 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Loring Park

As part of their Summer Music & Movies series, the Walker Art Center will host “Minneapolis’ long-loved roots rock band” the Honeydogs at 7:00 p.m., followed by a screening of the film Hairspray at dusk.

Cat Video Festival

What: Screening, Movies
When: Tuesday, August 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: CHS Field

The 2016 Cat Video Festival is being held at CHS Field this Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. General admission tickets to this event cost $10; $1 from all ticket sales, as well as proceeds from the sale of VIP tickets, will go to Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue.

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”


What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, August 10th at 5:30 p.m.; Friday, August 12th at 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, August 13th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Rarig Center at the University of Minnesota

Written by Brian Scot Johnson and Michael Krefting and directed by Becci Schmidt, AirD&D tells the tale of Brett and Cassandra, who—“in need of some extra cash”—turn to Airbnb. “Their new house guest, Wells, is a traveling Dungeon Master who helps people fix their relationships . . . with roleplaying.” Starring Philip Skretvedt as Brett, Tamara Koltes as Cassandra, and Siarde Evans as Wells.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies, TV
When: Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” and is frequently followed by live music, which will be provided this month by A Ghost Revival.

Geek Chic Movies & Knits

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts, Screening, Movies
When: Thursday, August 11th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: StevenBe

The “nerdy fiber artists” of Geek Chic invite you to join them at StevenBe “for snacks, knitting (and crocheting!), and a screening of one of our favorite shows or movies.” The cost of attending this event is $5, or free for StevenBe members.

Can’t Stop the Serenity

What: Screening, Movies
When: Thursday, August 11th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

The Riverview Theater will screen the film Serenity this Thursday at 8:30 p.m., preceded by a showing of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from this event will benefit Equality Now.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, August 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

A Reading with Charles Baxter, Karen Babine, and Rachel Coyne

When: Thursday, August 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

Magers & Quinn Booksellers invites you to attend a reading “with acclaimed local writers Charles Baxter, Karen Babine, and Rachel Coyne, who all won or were a finalist for a 2016 Minnesota Book Award” this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Weekly Comics Chat

When: Thursday, August 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

When: Thursday, August 11th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Parkway Theater in Minneapolis is hosting a free screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, complete with “Dollar raffle! Beer! Tacos! Couches! And the best damned popcorn in town!”

Edutainment Video Discussion

What: Screening, Educational
When: Friday, August 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Edutainment Video Discussion is an event series that gathers people together to watch “curated collections of videos on various topics,” with discussion breaks during the evening to talk about what’s being shown. This month’s topic is “Automation and Algorithms: How things get done in the future without humans.”

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Viewing Party

What: Screening
When: Friday, August 12th, 8:00-11:30 p.m.
Where: Schmidt Artist Lofts

“Join us for a free showing of an the classic MST3K episodes episode “Pod People!” If things go well, this could become our regular monthly Friday night thing!”

Game Designer Session

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, August 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Read the Book/See the Movie

The Geek Partnership Society’s Read the Book/See the Movie club meets on the second Friday of every month to “expand our reading and film horizons by comparing and contrasting films to their source material.” The location for this event rotates between the Waterbury Center and club members’ homes, so email the [email protected] to learn the location of this month’s meet-up and for more information about the featured book and movie.

Tsuinshi Anime Showing

In addition to Anime Detour (the annual convention for fans of Japanese animation, manga, video games, and culture), Anime Twin Cities also works to provide monthly events for fans of anime and manga in the Twin Cities. One such event is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which they have joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” and at which they will show various anime movies and series.

50 Year Mission Tour

Creation Entertainment is hosting the 50 Year Mission Tour Star Trek convention at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis this weekend. Celebrity guests scheduled to appear include John de Lancie, Michael Dorn, Terry Farrell, Gates McFadden, William Shatner, Marina Sirtis, and more.

Supernatural Convention

When: Friday, August 12th–Sunday, August 14th
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

Creation Entertainment is also hosting a Supernatural convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center this weekend. Special guests scheduled to appear include Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jared Padalecki, and more.

Cosplay Fest

What: Meetup, Cosplay
When: Saturday, August 13th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

Provided by Anime Twin Cities this weekend, Cosplay Fest will feature activities for fans of cosplay that include workshops (where attendees will “earn new techniques to improve your costuming and performance skills, taught by local experts”); photography (“all attendees in costume will get a short personal photo session with an experienced photographer”); contests (including “a formal workmanship contest and a fun ‘Iron Cosplay’ contest where teams construct a costume out of surprise materials”); and, most importantly, community (“bring a work-in-progress and enjoy the company of other crafters and seamsters in our shared work space”).

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Pusheen Party

When: Saturday, August 13th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Tomodachi at the Mall of America

Tomodachi at the Mall of America is hosting a Pusheen Party this Saturday in honor of the “adorable cartoon cat and pop culture phenomenon.” To celebrate the occasion, there will be “a Pusheen photo booth, complimentary snacks and sips, interactive art activities, a fashion contest . . . DJ sets by DJ Bach and Tim Dao . . . product giveaways and multiple hourly prize drawings for Pusheen items, gift cards, and more.”

Craftapaloza and Gift Expo

When: Saturday, August 13th, 10:00 a.m–5:00 p.m.
Where: Mall of America Parkview Event Center

Perfectly Unique Events presents Craftapaloza featuring free admission to “over 60 booths to shop and enjoy.”

Gotta Drink ‘Em All Pub Crawl

What: Nightlife, Gaming, TV
When: Saturday, August 13th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Downtown Minneapolis

The 508 Bar and Grill, Barfly, Brothers Bar and Grill, Cowboy Jack’s, Kieran’s Irish Pub, The Loon Cafe, The Pint Public House, Pizza Luce, The Pourhouse, and Rouge at the Lounge will participate in the Gotta Drink ’Em All Pub Crawl this Saturday night, and you are invited to as well! T-shirt preorders for this event have ended, “but costumes are still encouraged.”

Doctor Who Meetup: “The Day of the Doctor”

When: Saturday, August 13th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup Group will be screening “The Day of the Doctor” this Saturday at the Parkway Theater.

Journeyfolk of Fandom Workshop/Salon

What: Professional development
When: Sunday, August 14th, 1:00–4:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon in the Waterbury Building

The Journeyfolk Of Fandom Workshop/Salon is part of GPS’ Classroom Series. It is for people at all levels of convention/geek organization event running because “We believe that everyone has something to learn and to share.” The topic for August is hotel contracts. “We’d love to see people from all of the conventions/geek events/geek organizations, big or small, there.”

Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities

When: Sunday, August 14th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: 331 Club

Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities is our very own branch of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, “a rule-breaking cocktail of dames, drinking, and drawing” that has become “the world’s premier alt.drawing movement.” Founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, it has since spread to over 100 cities around the world “from Akron to Zagreb,” including Minneapolis. Elektra Cute—assistant director of the Playful Peacock Showgirl Academy, producer of and performer with Black Hearts Burlesque, producer of the Minneapolis Burlesque Festival, and host of Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities—invites you to join her at the 331 Club for this Sunday’s session of drawing “glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality.”

The underground performer posing this month will be Scarlette Revolver, “producer and hostess of Dr. Sketchy’s Saint Cloud!” At the end of the event, attendees can submit their artwork to be judged by Blanche and Elektra; the artists of their favorite submissions will receive fabulous prizes from sponsors of Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities, including Blick Art Materials, Fast Mary’s (Minneapolis-based maker of “Bloody Mary enhancers”), and the Fox Den Salon (“your Uptown Minneapolis cool hair shop”), among others.
