Summer Music & Movies: Bruise Violet followed by Big Cats and Man with a Movie Camera

As part of the museum’s Summer Music & Movies series, the Walker Art Center will host Bruise Violet (City Pages‘ Best New Band 2016) and experimental instrumental outfit Big Cats starting at 7:00 p.m., followed by a screening of the film Man with a Movie Camera at dusk.

Feminist Comic Book Club: Batwoman: Hydrology

When: Tuesday, August 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

The Feminist Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup at Mischief Toy Store this Tuesday evening, moderated by Grace Butkowski. The comic book being read for and discussed at this meeting is Batwoman: Hydrology.

YogaQuest

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, August 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Product Conf 2016

Where: Minnesota History Center

Product Conf is “a one-day conference dedicated to all things product,” featuring presentations and workshops on product management, lean UX, service design, and other topics. You can register at devjam.com/productconf.

Minneapolis Book Club: The Yoga of Max’s Discontent by Karan Bajaj

When: Wednesday, August 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Wicked Wort Brewing Company

The Minneapolis Book Club, Conversations & Cocktails group will be hosting a meetup on Wednesday night at Wicked Wort Brewing Company in Robbinsdale at 7:00 p.m. The book in focus at this meeting is The Yoga of Max’s Discontent by Karan Bajaj.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays

The producers of TC Trek Trivia invite you and your companions to explore the strange new world of Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to Doctor Who! Following the tried-and-true format of TC Trek Trivia, Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays consists of five rounds: Day of the Doctor (focusing on the Doctors); Jelly Babies (for which you will be asked to identify the image); Hello, Sweetie (focusing on the companions and other allies of the Doctors); Don’t Blink (for which you will be asked to complete the quote); and Exterminate (focusing on villains). Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Who.

Minneapolis Comic Book Club: Sex Criminals

Where: Dreamers Vault Games

The Minneapolis Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup for its members at Dreamers Vault Games this Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The group will be discussing Sex Criminals: One Weird Trick; Sex Criminals: Two Worlds One Cop; and Sex Criminals: Three the Hard Way by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky.

Movies in the Park: Medicine of the Wolf

When: Wednesday, August 24th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Silverwood Park (New Brighton, MN)

The Film Society of Minneapolis–St. Paul is hosting a free screening of the documentary Medicine of the Wolf by Julia Huffman, an official selection of the 2015 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. There is also a “pre-film concert” beginning at 6:30.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

When: Thursday, August 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Great Geek Garage Sale Donation Drop Off

Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society is accepting donations for their annual Great Geek Garage Sale, including “clothing (all ages), cookware, dishware, bedding, decor items, art, craft supplies, shoes, sports equipment, tools, small appliances, electronics, media (CDs, DVDs, games, puzzles, books, comics, etc.), jewelry, costumes, holiday decorations,” and more. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact [email protected] with questions or to make arrangements for large items or dropping off outside of the scheduled hours.

Weekly Comics Chat

Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Grown-Up Club Haus: Coloring Night

Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

Head over to Bauhaus Brew Labs on Thursday night for an evening of adult coloring. Use the provided supplies or bring your own. The organizers note: “At the end of the night, we’ll perform a ceremonial sacrifice of all the stupid pointless white crayons.

That Lovin’ Feelin’

Where: Hudson House Grand Hotel

The St. Croix Off Broadway Dinner Theatre presents That Lovin’ Feelin’, “a musical biography chronicling the Righteous Brothers’ life story and featuring 18 of their memorable songs.” Dinner is served between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., with the show starting at 8:00.

Dancing Mindfulness with Dr. Jamie Marich

When: Thursday, August 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Join YogaQuest, Minnesota’s “unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling,” and Dr. Jamie Marich, creator of Dancing Mindfulness, for a fundraiser supporting OutFront Minnesota. Dancing Mindfulness uses geek-themed danced to cultivate “mindful awareness,” and Dr. Marich encourages attendees to post song requests on the Facebook event page.

Arena Ground Rigging Workshop

What: Educational, Theater
When: Friday, August 26th at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 27th at 9:30 a.m.
Where: The O’Shaughnessy Theater, St. Paul, MN

Technical Tools of the Trade is hosting two-day rigging workshop this Friday and Saturday at the O’Shaugnessy Theater in St. Paul, after which attendees will be able to “identify common rigging gear and hardware, set up ‘rig world’ safely and effectively, read floor marks and communicate information clearly with the other riggers, assemble bridles and tie work ropes into them, know how to support upriggers in your collaboration, [and] prep, check, and run motors.”

Music & Movies with the Cactus Blossoms

When: Friday, August 25th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Lake Harriet Bandshell

In this second music and film event (unrelated to the Walker series), the Cactus Blossoms will play a free concert followed by a screening of the 1961 Parent Trap. Arrive early for crafts and facepainting starting at 6:30.

Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour

When: Friday, August 25th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

The first one went so well, so we’re doing it again!” Ground Zero is hosting a social event where you can “talk about how-tos, where-do-you-gets, and anything else cosplay/costuming, or just life in general.” You get in free if you’re in costume, and there’s an optional Midnight Costume Show. This is an 18+ event.

LionCon 2016

When: Saturday, August 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Where: St. Cloud River’s Edge Convention Center

LionCon is “a geek convention geared toward bringing the gaming and counter cultures together right in our backyard, all the while promoting fun community and showcasing new and exciting products.” The event includes special guests, tournaments, vendors, and more.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, August 27th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Open Studio

When: Saturday, August 27th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Center for Book Arts

The Cartoonists Conspiracy will be hosting an open studio event this week at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Fellow conspirators are encouraged to bring concepts or works in progress to work on and get ideas or feedback and to network and engage in “general geek talk.” Coffee, tea, beer, wine, and food will be available at this event.

Queer Qommunity Qlothing Qollective #2

What: Sale, LGBTQA+
When: Saturday, August 27th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Revolution 8, Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition’s trans youth leadership program, will be selling used clothes by the bagful for $5 each to raise money for the organization. The event declares that items will be available for all sizes, gender presentations, occasions, seasons, and “levels of glamour.”

The Chalk Walk Art Festival

What: Festivals, Arts
When: Saturday, August 27th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Harrison Park

This free event invites you to join Project Human Kind to go crazy with your chalk art skills. At the same time, you’re encouraged to bring school supplies, chalk and chalkboards, children’s books, or monetary donations for a good cause.

Black Hat Collective Quarterly Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Comics
When: Saturday, August 27th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Black Hat Collective (the Geek Partnership Society’s graphic-artist club) will be meeting this Saturday to “engage in constructive peer critique to improve as artists and writers,” to “produce the best weird little comics we can,” and to “consume punch and pie.”

Steam Age Chronicles: The Clockwork Armor Launch and Signing

When: Saturday, August 27th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Local author Stu Tighe will be at the Source on Saturday to celebrate the first issue in his comic series Steam Age Chronicles: The Clockwork Armor, illustrated by Declan McDermott. The event is free, and the comic will be available for purchase.

Twin Cities Pokémon Pub Crawl 2016

When: Saturday, August 27th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Downtown Minneapolis

You’re invited to #drinkemall at participating bars in downtown Minneapolis this Saturday night in a Pokémon-themed pub crawl. There will be “prizes, games, drink specials and more! Choose your team t-shirt at checkout.” Costumes are not required but highly encouraged.

Cinema in the Cemetery: The Curse of Frankenstein

When: Saturday, August 26th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Pioneers & Soldiers Cemetery

See a spooky movie in a spooky setting. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) stars horror greats Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. The event notes, “Hammer’s first gothic horror film was a box-office smash on both sides of the Atlantic.” Gates at 7:00, film at 8:30.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Screening, Movies, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, August 27th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Mondo Queer Beach Party

When: Sunday, August 28th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: East Lake Nokomis Beach

In addition to Saturday’s Queer Qommunity Qlothing Qollective event, Gender Revolution 8 is hosting an “intergenerational extravaganza” at Lake Nokomis on Sunday. Enjoy grilled food, drinks, and “fun trans & queer swag.” Donations are encouraged but not required. Proceeds will go to the services of the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition.

Weirdo Art and Hotdog Sale

When: Sunday, August 28th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: 2600 South Pleasant Avenue, Minneapolis

“Have fun, eat hot dogs, and buy art” at this quirky event. Offerings will include jewelry, T-shirts, wall art, crafts, and more. See the Facebook event page (linked above) for a full list of artists.

Gender Jam

When: Sunday, August 28th at 12:45 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam “is a safe space for Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Questioning & Intersex teens to hang out and create community” that meets on the last Sunday of every month. You can meet up with the group this Sunday at Dreamers Vault Games “to play video games, look at comic books, play board/card games, snack, and be together.” Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on the Twin Cities Geek Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) for more information.

Medieval Court Dance Practice

Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Barony of Nordskogen (the Minneapolis chapter of the Society of Creative Anachronism) has partnered with the Geek Partnership Society “to make their biweekly medieval court dance practices a Geek Physique event.” The instructor this week will again be Mistress Rosanore of Redthorn.
