Author and voice actor Joe Zieja will be signing copies of his novel Mechanical Failure at Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore tonight.

Shadow Horse Theatre 2016 Fundraiser: Murder Mysteries

When: Monday, August 29th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: The Black Forest Inn

Shadow Horse Theatre invites you to celebrate their productions and raise money for future work at this event, at which there will be “food, fun, [and] a silent auction with a wide variety of amazing prizes,” as well as a special encore performance of the theater’s 2014 production of Neil Gaiman’s play Murder Mysteries.

Girly Book Club: What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

The Minneapolis chapter of the Girly Book Club is hosting a meetup Monday night (to which new members are welcome). The book being read for and discussed at this meeting is What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty; please join the Girly Book Club Meetup Group to learn the location of this event.

White Belts Fight Night

When: Tuesday, August 30th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

White Belt Fight Night is “an evening of gaming that will feature Street Fighter V on PC and PlayStation 4, Killer Instinct on Xbox One, and a variety of titles on Xbox 360.” Glitch adds: “Want to play a particular fighting game? Bring it along to share or make game requests over on the Facebook event. Controllers are available, but feel free to bring any personal controllers and fight sticks.”

Game Designer Session

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, August 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

YogaQuest Continues: “We Are Starstuff”

When: Tuesday, August 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

A Nightmare on Riverside Ave

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Wednesday, August 31st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Another event being hosted by Glitch this week is A Nightmare on Riverside Ave, “a spooky night of horror games,” at which “the top voted title from our ever-changing list of games will be played on the big TV with the volume cranked up.” Attendees are welcome to participate or just to “watch the gameplay from a safe and comfortable distance,” and are cautioned that “due to the mature content of many horror games,” the event is not recommended for anyone under 16.

Auditions for A Klingon Christmas Carol

When: Wednesday, August 31st at 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, September 3rd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

Tim Uren and the Historic Mounds Theatre are seeking thirteen to fifteen actors “for a wide variety of roles” for the annual production of A Klingon Christmas Carol. Those interested are asked to email [email protected] to schedule an audition for August 31 or September 3, “bring along a headshot and resume, and prepare a one to two minute monologue of your choosing for the audition.” Callbacks will be made by the evening of Thursday, September 8, and rehearsals will begin in mid-October.

Let’s Meet Up and Draw Jam Comics

Where: Diamonds Coffee Shoppe

Cartoonists Conspiracy Twin Cities meets at Diamonds Coffee Shoppe in Minneapolis on the first Thursday of every month to “draw collaborative jam comics, socialize, and drink caffeinated beverages.” Anyone interested in drawing and/or jamming with them is invited!

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Great Geek Garage Sale Donation Drop Off

When: Thursday, September 1st between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society is accepting donations for its annual Great Geek Garage Sale, including “clothing (all ages), cookware, dishware, bedding, decor items, art, craft supplies, shoes, sports equipment, tools, small appliances, electronics, media (CDs, DVDs, games, puzzles, books, comics, etc.), jewelry, costumes, holiday decorations,” and more. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact [email protected] with questions or to make arrangements for large items or dropping off outside of the scheduled hours.

One-Shot Comics: Monstress

The One-Shot Comics book club (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) will be discussing Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda at its meeting this month, which will be held at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis.

A Reading with Sequoia Nagamatsu, Salvatore Pane, John Colburn, and Harmony Neal

Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

Author Sequoia Nagamatsu will be reading from Where We Go When All We Were Is Gone at Magers & Quinn Booksellers this Thursday night, with additional readings by Salvatore Pane, John Colburn, and Harmony Neal.

Weekly Comics Chat

When: Thursday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

MetaCon 2016

When: Friday, September 2nd to Monday, September 5th
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

Happening all Labor Day weekend, MetaCon is “a four-day celebration of geek culture and nerd life” featuring special guests, screenings, cosplay, vendors, workshops, and more for fans of anime, sci fi, steampunk, comics, gaming, and other “nerd stuff.”

Friday Night Magic

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, September 2nd to September 5th
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Multiple Maniacs

What: Screening, Movies
When: Friday, September 2nd–Saturday, September 3rd
Where: Uptown Theatre

The Uptown Theatre is screening John Waters’s “gloriously grotesque, unavailable-for-decades second feature” Multiple Maniacs at 11:55 p.m. this Friday and Saturday night. “Replete with all manner of depravity . . . this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, who’s out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair.”

Open Gaming

When: Saturday, September 3rd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, September 3rd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Pride Festival at Bayfront

When: Saturday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Bayfront Festival Park (Duluth, MN)

The Duluth Superior GLBTAQI will be celebrating its 12th annual Pride Festival in Bayfront Festival Park this Saturday. With an expanded festival layout this year, the day “will be filled with music and entertainment covering the full spectrum of genres to cater to all” and “will include multiple beer tents [and] a wide variety of exhibitors [and] vendors, including our special Children’s Tent, offering an entire day’s worth of activities for families.”

RPG Sunday Game Day

When: Sunday, September 4th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day on Sundays during the NFL season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Viking Martial Arts Intro Workshop

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Sunday, September 4th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Apple Valley Community Center

“Learn to fight like a Viking using authentic Viking weapons and equipment” at this event at the Apple Valley Community Center this Sunday. At this workshop, which will focus on using a spear and shield, you will “learn how to attack with power, accuracy, and control; learn how to defend and control an enemy with a Viking shield,” and more. Attendees of this event must be 14 years of age or older, and they (or a parent or legal guardian, for attendees under 18) must also sign a liability waiver and photo release.
