Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, September 5th through Sunday, September 11th.

Tabletop Tuesdays

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, September 6th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Glitch (a nonprofit that “promotes the exploration of digital games as a culture, career, and creative practice”) invites you to GlitchHQ on the first and third Tuesday of every month for a night of board games. You will be able to “play games from our tabletop library or bring your favorite to share with your friends and the community.” Players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, and if you aren’t sure how to play a particular game, Glitch’s “knowledgeable organizers can teach you the basics.”

Feminist Comic Book Club: Lumberjanes

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Tuesday, September 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

The Feminist Comic Book Club is hosting a meetup at Mischief Toy Store this Tuesday evening, moderated by Grace Butkowski. The comic book being read for and discussed at this meeting is Lumberjanes: Out of Time by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, and Brooke Allen.

September Kotatsu

What: Meetup, Anime
When: Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Kotatsu is a monthly open hangout night presented by Anime Twin Cities (the parent organization of the Anime Detour convention) to which you are invited to bring games, cards, knitting, writing, “or any other hobby that suits you.” You are also more than welcome to “just bring yourself and join us around a table for good company and good conversation.” This public gathering is being held at the Source Comics and Games this month; attendees are encouraged to “look for the host wearing a blue armband with the ATC logo” upon arrival.

YogaQuest: Star Wars (Abridged)

When: Tuesday, September 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Games with Dames

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Wednesday, September 7th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Sidhe Brewery

Geek Girl Brunch invites you to “throw some fun into your Wednesday” and join them “for a chill, non-competitive board game night.” The Geek Girls will be bringing their favorite games to share, so come to play or just watch, and show up early for pre-game drinks at Sidhe Brewery’s happy hour!

Super Duper Video

What: Screening, Movies, TV
When: Wednesday, September 7th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

Magic Society is presenting Super Duper Video, “a psychedelic puppet and video show hosted by Buddy and Friday Hangs,” this Wednesday night at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis. “Come out for a very special night of rare, unseen, and weird puppet television shows, films, and videos from around the world!”

Graywolf Literary Salon: A World of Voices

When: Thursday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Aria Mpls

Local indie publisher Graywolf Press is hosting its World of Voices literary salon this Thursday evening, with “a program featuring three leading lights in the literary world in a lively conversation about fiction, poetry, and twenty-first century ideas.” The event will be moderated by publisher Fiona McCrae and executive editor Jeff Shotts, and the aforementioned “leading lights” are Anuradha Roy, Solmaz Sharif, and Monica Youn.

Lonely Arts: Creative Nonfiction Edition

What: Speed Critiquing
When: Thursday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler Brewing Company

Lonely Arts is a new event series from the Loft Literary Center and Hazel & Wren that “repurposes the form of speed dating to help writers find what they really need—a good critique partner.” This month’s edition of the event is specifically for creative nonfiction writers, including writers of memoirs, essays, and narrative nonfiction.

Caroline Burau Discusses Tell Me Exactly What Happened: Dispatches from 911

When: Thursday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Common Good Books

Common Good Books is hosting author Caroline Burau, a “journalist, an emergency dispatcher, and a technical writer,” this Thursday evening. She will be reading from her memoir Tell Me Exactly What Happened, in which she “beautifully captures the tumultuous world of a 911 dispatcher, as she struggles to calm frantic callers, dispatch resources, and offer lifesaving instructions over the phone.”

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Great Geek Garage Sale Donation Drop Off

What: Donation Drop Off
When: Thursday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society is accepting donations for its annual Great Geek Garage Sale, including “clothing (all ages), cookware, dishware, bedding, decor items, art, craft supplies, shoes, sports equipment, tools, small appliances, electronics, media (CDs, DVDs, games, puzzles, books, comics, etc.), jewelry, costumes, holiday decorations,” and more. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact [email protected] with questions or to make arrangements for large items or dropping off outside of the scheduled hours.

Weekly Comics Chat

Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Friday Night Magic: Conspiracy Booster Draft Event

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, September 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Edutainment Video Discussion

What: Screening, Educational
When: Friday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Edutainment Video Discussion is an event series that gathers people together to watch “curated collections of videos on various topics,” with discussion breaks during the evening to talk about what’s being shown. This month’s topic is “Automation and Algorithms: How things get done in the future without humans.”

Game Designer Session

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month and invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

Read the Book/See the Movie

The Geek Partnership Society’s Read the Book/See the Movie club meets on the second Friday of every month to “expand our reading and film horizons by comparing and contrasting films to their source material.” The location for this event rotates between the Waterbury Center and club members’ homes, so email the organizers at [email protected] to learn the location of this month’s meetup and for more information about the featured book and movie.

Tsuinshi Anime Showing

Where: Event Horzion at the Waterbury Center

A second event this week from Anime Twin Cities is the Tsuinshi Anime Club, for which the group has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Friday of each month with this cosponsored anime club” and at which they will show various anime movies and series.

Fantastic Planet

What: Screening, Movies
When: Friday, September 9th–Saturday, September 10th
Where: Uptown Theatre

The Uptown Theatre is screening Rene Laloux’s “politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction” Fantastic Planet at 11:55 p.m. this Friday and Saturday night. “With its eerie, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor, brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence.”

Furry Migration 2016

What: Convention, Gaming
When: Friday, September 9th–Sunday, September 11th
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

Furry Migration is “an annual furry convention proudly held in Minneapolis” at which attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy events and panels, the Fursuit Dance Expo, room parties, tabletop gaming, and video gaming, as well as presentations by 2016 guests of honor Sunny Dingo, Ifus Moraine, and Ursula Vernon.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, September 10th at 10:00 a.m.

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Geeks Read Picnic

The Geek Partnership Society’s Geeks Read club will be hosting its annual picnic on Saturday afternoon. The book being read for and discussed at this event is Confessions of a D-List Supervillain by Jim Bernheimer; attendees are encouraged to bring desserts or side dishes to share.

Doctor Who Meetup: “Rose” and “The End of the World”

The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup Group will be screening “Rose” and “The End of the World” this Saturday at the Parkway Theater.

Firefly and Fireflies: An Outdoor Screening and Camp Out

In addition to Games with Dames on Wednesday, Geek Girl Brunch is also hosting Firefly and Fireflies this Saturday, “an end of the summer camp out, complete with an outdoor marathon of Joss Whedon’s Firefly.” The address of the campsite will be shared with those who join and RSVP to the event by following the link above, so click, then “pack your tent, swimsuit . . . and favorite campfire foods as Geek Girls take over the wilderness!”

Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities

When: Sunday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: 331 Club

Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities is our very own branch of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, “a rule-breaking cocktail of dames, drinking, and drawing” that has become “the world’s premier alt.drawing movement.” Founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, it has since spread to over 100 cities around the world “from Akron to Zagreb,” including Minneapolis. Elektra Cute—assistant director of the Playful Peacock Showgirl Academy, producer of and performer with Black Hearts Burlesque, producer of the Minneapolis Burlesque Festival, and host of Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities—invites you to join her at the 331 Club for this Sunday’s session of drawing “glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality.”

The underground performer posing this month will be Elektra herself! At the end of the event, attendees can submit their artwork to be judged by Elektra; the artists of her favorite submissions will receive fabulous prizes from sponsors of Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities, including Blick Art Materials, Fast Mary’s (Minneapolis-based maker of “Bloody Mary enhancers”), and the Fox Den Salon (“your Uptown Minneapolis cool hair shop”), among others.
