Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, September 26th through Sunday, October 2nd.

Pokémon GO Gym Meet

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Monday, September 26th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: George Latimer Central Library

Head to St. Paul’s Central Library Monday night to “compete with other trainers to see who can catch the most Pokémon, and battle other teams to own the Library Gym.” There will also be “Pokémon crawls” taking place before and after this event between the library and Dayton’s Bluff.

Girly Book Club: Behind Closed Doors

What: Meetup, Books
When: Monday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minneapolis chapter of the Girly Book Club is hosting a meetup Monday night (at which new members are welcome) at Kieran’s Irish Pub. The book being read and discussed at this meeting is Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris.

Banned Books Storytime

Where: St. Paul Public Libraries

This week is Banned Books Week, which celebrates “the freedom to read.” The St. Paul Public Library is putting on a number of events, and one series is the Banned Books Storytime, which will host a number of authors at libraries throughout St. Paul:

Geek Date Night: Ghostbusters Extended Cut

What: Movies & TV, Screening
When: Tuesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clubhouse Jäger

Join Geek Date Night for a free, age 21+ screening of the extended version of 2016’s Ghostbusters and a round of pre-movie trivia with Twin Cities Geek contributor Rob Callahan. Trivia is at 7:00; the movie starts at 9:00.

Game Designer Session

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group meets up monthly for board gaming, card gaming, role-playing, and video gaming events and weekend extravaganzas. One such event is the Game Designer Session series, which meets on the second Friday and the last Tuesday of each month. It invites those who have an idea for a game or who “enjoy tinkering with rules, graphic design, or game theory” to bring ideas and works in progress to be discussed and even play-tested by “game designers of all types and experience levels, from those employed in the industry to enthusiastic hobbyists.”

YogaQuest Continues: Stranger Things

When: Tuesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Nightmare on Riverside Ave

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Wednesday, September 28th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Nightmare on Riverside Ave is “a spooky night of horror games” hosted by Glitch at which “the top voted title from our ever-changing list of games will be played on the big TV with the volume cranked up.” Attendees are welcome to participate or just to “watch the gameplay from a safe and comfortable distance” and are cautioned that “due to the mature content of many horror games,” the event is not recommended for anyone under 16.

Weresquito: Nazi Hunter World Premiere

What: Movies & TV, Screening
When: Wednesday, September 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Heights Theater

In Weresquito, “horrific Nazi experiments have left a surviving American WWII soldier with a terrifying condition: at the sight of fresh blood, he transforms into a man-sized, blood-sucking killer insect! Refusing to let his affliction destroy him, he instead commits himself to using his ‘powers’ for good—by finding the people responsible and bringing them to justice!” This screening features appearances by the film’s cast and crew, “photo opportunities with the title creature from the film,” and more.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays: The Doctors

When: Wednesday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

The producers of TC Trek Trivia invite you and your companions to explore the strange new world of Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays, the only pub trivia in the Twin Cities dedicated to Doctor Who! Following the tried-and-true format of TC Trek Trivia, Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays consists of five rounds: Day of the Doctor (focusing on the Doctors); Jelly Babies (for which you will be asked to identify the image); Hello, Sweetie (focusing on the companions and other allies of the Doctors); Don’t Blink (for which you will be asked to complete the quote); and Exterminate (focusing on villains). Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Who.

Banned Books Week Movie Matinees

When: Thursday, September 29th–Saturday, October 1
Where: St. Paul Public Libraries

In addition to the Banned Books Storytime (above) and the Banned Authors Book Signing (below), various St. Paul Public Library locations are screening film adaptations of books that people have attempted to ban:

White Belts Fight Night

When: Thursday, September 29th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Another gaming event hosted by Glitch, White Belt Fight Night is “an evening of gaming that will feature Street Fighter V on PC and PlayStation 4, Killer Instinct on Xbox One, and a variety of titles on Xbox 360.” They add: “Want to play a particular fighting game? Bring it along to share or make game requests over on the Facebook event. Controllers are available, but feel free to bring any personal controllers and fight sticks.”

History Happy Hour: Political Comedy in Minnesota

What: Meetup, Educational
When: Thursday, September 29th at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Where: Alexander Ramsey House

The Minnesota Historical Society writes, “Have a drink with your friends at the Ramsey House while learning about the history of political comedy in Minnesota. Join Levi Weinhagen, artistic director of Comedy Suitcase, for a look at political satire in Minnesota.” This age 21+ program is offered at 5:30 and at 8:30. The price of admission includes “two drinks, snacks, presentation and time to mingle in the mansion.”

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Gremlins Screening

What: Movies & TV, Screening
When: Thursday, September 29th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

If you’d like a real Throwback Thursday, the Parkway Theater is screening the 1984 comedy classic Gremlins —which, as it happens, we covered in our Throwback Thursday column last year—on September 29th for the very reasonable price of $2. The theater has “Beer, couches, tacos and the best popcorn in town!”—just don’t feed you-know-who after midnight.

Twin Cities Arab Film Festival

What: TV & Movies, Screening
When: Thursday, September 29th–Sunday, October 2
Where: St. Anthony Main Theater

Speaking of films, Mizna‘s 11th annual Arab Film Festival is this week and features over 20 independent films from the Middle East as well as “works by local filmmakers and discussions with artists, actors, activists, and directors from the Twin Cities and around the world.” The opening-night reception at 8:45 p.m. Thursday is free and open to the public. More information is available on Mizna’s website or from the MSP Film Society.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Hamline Theatre Costume Sale

What: Theater & Comedy, Cosplay, Sale
When: Friday, September 30th–Saturday, October 1st
Where: Hamline University Theatre, Drew Fine Arts Lobby

Looking for ideas for your next cosplay event, costume party, or Halloween shindig? “Hamline University Theatre is holding a costume sale featuring costumes of all kinds. Vintage, handmade, unique, and everything under $10!” This sale is happening Friday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Nature, a Walking Play

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, September 30th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Three Rivers Park District

This play, which takes audience members to four different locations within the Three Rivers Park, aims to “travel back in time and explore Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau’s mutual love of the natural world.” Beverages are available before the play, and picnic lunches can be reserved ahead of time.

Friday Night Magic

When: Friday, September 30th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

YogaQuest Friday Night Special: Symphony of Science

When: Friday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Another YogaQuest event this week is the Friday Night Special, in which attendees will “celebrate the genius of NYCC guest Neil deGrasse Tyson with a Symphony of Science themed yoga-along!” (The reason for the NYCC tie-in? YogaQuest is heading to New York Comic-Con October 6–9!)

Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour

When: Friday, September 30th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: The Pourhouse

At this social event for cosplayers, costumers, and other crafters, you can “talk about how-tos, where-do-you-gets, and anything else cosplay/costuming, or just life in general.” Meet up, have a drink, and move over to the dance floor starting at 10:00 p.m.

GPS Scavenger Hunt

When: Saturday, October 1 at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society invites you to “Gather your teams, and be ready!” Teams of four people (six if two or more hunters are under 12) meet and register between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. ; judging will take place at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by a social hour.

Autumn Nerf Outing

When: Saturday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Newell Park

Minnesota Nerf is hosting a gathering from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Newell Park. Bring your blasters and darts for Carpe, Defend the Core, Capture the Flag, and Clicker Elimination.

24-Hour Comic Day

When: Saturday, October 1st–Sunday, October 2nd
Where: Minnesota Center for Book Arts

“24-Hour Comics Day is an annual international celebration of comics creation. On this day, creative folks take on the 24-hour comics challenge: to create a 24-page comic book story, normally months worth of work, in 24 straight hours.” The Minnesota Center for Book Arts is participating from 10:00 a.m. Saturday to 10:00 a.m. Sunday.

Open Gaming at the Source

When: Saturday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, October 1st at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

The third event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Mischief Birthday Party

When: Saturday, October 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store is turning one year old! Help them celebrate with cake, prizes, and a selfie booth from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can also head upstairs starting at noon for the event below . . .

It’s a Board Gaming Day in the Neighborhood

Also at Mischief on Saturday is “a crazy day of playing board and card games!” Join the group in the store’s upstairs gaming room to make use of the games they have there or bring your own to play.

Ingress First Saturday: Halloween Edition

When: Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Akin Riverside Park Bandshell (Anoka, MN)

The United Geeks of Gaming group organizes Ingress First Saturday on the first Saturday of every month. This meetup is a “‘cross faction’ (both Enlightened and Resistance together) event to get to know other players, have fun playing the game, award prizes for best in categories during the day, and wrapping up with a chance to hang out together.” Since this is October, the group will be meeting at Akin Riverside Park in Anoka, the so-called Halloween capital of the world. Banned Authors Book Signing

When: Saturday, October 1 at 3:00 p.m.
Where: St. Paul Public Library Dayton’s Bluff

The final event the St. Paul Public Libraries are holding for Banned Books Week is this group signing, where “noted local authors including Pete Hautman, Phyllis Root, and Marion Dane Bauer will sign copies of their books that have at one time been challenged or banned. Authors will also answer questions about their experiences with censorship.”

Cabaret Fest

When: Saturday, October 1st–Sunday, October 2nd
Where: Phoenix Theater

The Twin Cities Cabaret Artists Network (TCANN) is hosting a two-day celebration this week. On October 1 from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m., members of TCCAN “will each be performing 10-minute sets of songs and stories.” On Sunday is “Behind the Scenes” from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., giving a look at show preparation and development, and a social hour from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
