Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, October 17th through Sunday, October 23rd.

Harry Potter Film Festival

What: Movies, Screening
When: Monday, October 17th–Thursday, October 20th
Where: IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo

To get ready for the November release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, all eight Harry Potter movies are back in theaters in IMAX, and the showings continue this week at the IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo. There are multiple screening times for each film; see the theater website for all ticketing information.

Figure Drawing Salon

What: Meetup, Arts
When: Monday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a Figure Drawing Salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

24th Annual Sally Awards

When: Monday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Ordway Center for the Performing Arts

The Sally Ordway Irvine Awards “recognize and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of artists, educators, volunteers, philanthropists, and leaders who strengthen and enrich the stage of Minnesota with their commitment to the arts and arts education.” Monday night will feature a pre-ceremony social hour, presentation of the awards, and desserts and live music to follow.

Technical Tools of the Trade is holding a free talk Monday night focusing on what goes into keeping a performing-arts show running beyond opening night. “Our panel of seasoned, local running crews will discuss what goes into what they do, how they got where they are and the challenges and brilliancies of their profession.

Masquerade at Bernard’s: The Shakespearean Weekend at Bernie’s

What: Arts & Comedy
When: Monday, October 17th–Friday, October 28th
Where: Phoenix Theater

Fearless Comedy Productions’ Brian Watson-Jones and Duck Washington have adapted the 1989 black comedy film Weekend at Bernie’s into a Shakespeare-style stage play. You can catch it at Uptown’s Phoenix Theater on Monday, October 17, which is a pay-what-you-can performance, and on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 28.

Feminist Comic Book Club: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Vol. 1

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

The Feminist Comic Book Club is hosting its meetup at Mischief Toy Store this Tuesday evening, moderated by Grace Butkowski. The comic book being discussed at this meeting is volume 1 of Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Knitting Social

What: Meetup, Crafts
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Join the Scoreboard Knit-Along Project for a knitting meetup to go along with the new History Center exhibit Gridiron Glory. “The concept is simple: Choose a football team to follow, then buy yarn in the team’s two colors. Whenever your team scores, knit one color to represent the points in a corresponding number of rows. When the opponent scores, use the other color to represent their points.”

Terrifying Tuesday

What: Movies, Screening
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Big Thrill Factory

Every Tuesday in October, SuperMonster市City!, David Barnhill, and Stephen Yogi Rueff are hosting a monster-movie screening event at the Big Thrill Factory in Minnetonka. In addition to the films of the week, there will be vendors, filmmakers, and other artists on site, and visitors can tour a toy exhibit curated by SuperMonster市City!. Beer and wine are also available. This week’s selections include Bad Egg and The Curse of Yig.

Café Scientifique

Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.”

Geek Date Night: Army of Darkness

What: Trivia, Movies, Screening
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clubhouse Jäger

Join Geek Date Night for another installment in its month-long Halloween-themed series. This week’s 21+ screening is Army of Darkness, with a round of pre-movie trivia. Trivia is at 7:00; the movie starts at 9:00.

YogaQuest Continues: Star Trek: “Mirror, Mirror”

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Photography Club Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Photography Club meets at the Waterbury Center at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss topics related to photography and/or participate in photo shoots.

The Not-So-Silent Planet: A Speculative Open-Mic

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, October 18th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (doors and sign-up at 8:00). The featured performer for this month’s session is Conrad Zero; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

When: Wednesday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Espresso Royale (Hennepin Avenue)

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is “a community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

Fright Flight Night

When: Thursday, October 20th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Indeed Brewing Company

Indeed is celebrating the Halloween season with “infusions inspired by your favorite sweet treats.” Stop by for concoctions like the Swedish Fish (Zwickelbier with Lingonberry) and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (Day Tripper with Peanut Butter and Cacao Nibs), plus candy to pair it with and “maybe a spooky movie too.”

Co-Op Talk

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Thursday, October 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly afternoon of drinks and discussion about a topic related to the gaming industry hosted by U of M–based nonprofit Glitch, which “promotes the exploration of video games as a culture, career, and creative practice.” This month, Glitch invites you to join them for the discussion “Games as Vehicles of Social Change” with facilitator Shanti Pothapragada.

Geek Physique/Nordskogen Dance Practice

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, October 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

“The Barony of Nordskogen (Minneapolis Society of Creative Anachronism) is partnering with GPS to make their biweekly medieval court dance practices a Geek Physique event.” This free practice will be led by Mistress Rosanore of Redthorn.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Working in the Performing Arts

When: Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Augsburg College

A second free Tools of the Trade event this week (in addition to Monday’s “What Happens After Opening?” talk) is this panel discussion open to anyone interested in working in performing arts. “Light refreshments” will be available.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey Minneapolis

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is “a short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Music Animated: A Puppet Concert Series

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, October 20th and Friday, October 21st at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, October 22nd at 2:00 p.m.
Where: In the Heart of the Beast

In this new series from In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, “accomplished musicians and award-winning puppeteers create an immersive experience similar to a live music video or a musician accompanying a silent film.” This week’s performances will feature local multi-instrumentalist Dosh. Victorian Séance: Fact or Fiction?

What: Arts, Educational
When: Thursday, October 20th–Saturday, October 22nd
Where: Alexander Ramsey House

“Experience elements of a Victorian séance in this one-of-a-kind event with artist and performer Michael Callahan, as he portrays a Victorian medium, and discover some of the tools and tricks used at a 19th-century séance.” This event is intended for ages 16 and older. Several time slots are already sold out at the time of this writing, so get your tickets soon!

Anime Fusion 2016

What: Conventions, Anime
When: Friday, October 21st–Sunday, October 23rd
Where: DoubleTree Park Place

This all-ages anime convention back for its fifth year. The weekend features panels, special guests, video and tabletop gaming, music, and, of course, cosplay. Check out the convention website for a full schedule and details.

Friday Night Magic: Kaladesh Draft Event

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, October 21st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

CSI: Fort Snelling

When: Friday, October 21st and Saturday, October 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Historic Fort Snelling

On Friday and Saturday nights, the Sutler Store at Fort Snelling “will be transformed into a historic tavern with hot cider and snacks” for an evening of crime and mystery set in 1827. “There will be twists, turns and, of course, a crime scene to investigate.” See the event page(s) for more details.

Misfits Tribute Show and Book Release Party

When: Friday, October 21st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Fraternal Order of Eagles 2507

“Ring in the Halloween season with an evening of Misfits covers and music inspired by the Misfits!” This event will celebrate the release of Hybrid Moments: A Literary Tribute to the Misfits from Weirdpunk Books. Hear live music from They Live, Die Ghost, We Are 138, Andy Hell, and other acts and between-performance readings by Darci Schummer, Axel Kohagen, Sam Richard, M. P. Johnson, and Twin Cities Geek’s own T. A. Wardrope.

Vilification Tennis Trumps Itself

When: Friday, October 21st at and Saturday, October 22nd at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl and Theater

Beloved insult-battle improv group Vilification Tennis is putting on an election-themed show on Friday and Saturday night to give you a much-needed laugh after this week’s third and final presidential debate. “Depending on how the polls are going, this could be the funniest or most depressing show we’ve ever done!”

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, October 22nd at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Hocus Pocus Drag Brunch and Costume Contest

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, October 22nd at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Union Restaurant Rooftop

Head to Union Saturday morning “for a WICKED brunch celebrating Hocus Pocus and other Halloween favorites.” Enjoy food, mimosas, and a costume contest with drag performers Bad Karma, Nocturna Lee Mission, and Sasha Cassadine. Although all ages are welcome, “the brunch is loud and there may be swearing or suggestive outfits.” This event will also be repeated on Saturday, October 29.

Board Game Day

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Saturday, October 22nd at 10:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

The Saint Paul Board Game Group will be at Mischief Toy Store all day Saturday for free gaming. You can drop by for a little while or all day, bring your own game or use one on hand in the gaming room, and bring a friend or make new ones there.

Como Friends ZooBoo

What: Kids, Crafts
When: Saturday, October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd at 4:30 p.m.
Where: Como Park Zoo and Conservatory

ZooBoo is a “non-scary, family-friendly Halloween event that benefits Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.” Aimed at kids 3 to 8, it offers two weekends of live entertainment, crafts, and “animal visitors”—this Saturday and Sunday are the first.

SciFi Halloween Costume Party

What: Kids, Crafts
When: Saturday, October 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: SciFi Saturday (Buffalo, MN)

Buffalo, Minnesota, group SciFi Saturday is hosting its annual Halloween costume party. Dressing up is encouraged but not mandatory, and attendees are asked to bring a potluck item. The event promises “Fun, music, movies and food.”
