Twin Cities Horror Festival V

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy, Films
When: Thursday, October 27th–Sunday, November 6th
Where: Southern Theater

The fifth annual Twin Cities Horror Festival is “11 terrifying days of theater, dance, music, and film at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.” See the festival website for the full lineup of horror-themed performances.

Level Up Games Halloween Spooktacular

What: Gaming
When: Monday, October 31st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games

From 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Halloween night, Level Up Games in South St. Paul will be hosting tournaments of the holiday-appropriate games Mysterium and Betrayal at House on the Hill. Entry is $5, or free if you’re wearing a costume, and there will be snacks on hand.

PokéCon Halloween Party

What: Party
When: Monday, October 31st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: DoubleTree Park Place

Even if you didn’t attend MN PokéCon on October 29 and 30, you can attend this local Pokémon convention’s free Halloween party. There will be “fun, games, and candy,” and some of the dealers from the convention will be sticking around to sell their wares. Head to the Orchard Suite at the DoubleTree Park Place hotel. Free Netrunner Pre-World Warm-Up Tournament

What: Gaming
When: Monday, October 31st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

Are two Sports Hoppers enough, or should your Runner have three? Will Quicksand tax the runner or should your Corp just switch back to using Vanilla? These are the types of questions you need to know before the World Championships!” This warm-up event is open to both experienced players and beginners, and there will be a special prize to the gamer who shows up in the best Netrunner costume!

Feminist Comic Book Club: Monstress #1

When: Tuesday, November 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

The Feminist Comic Book Club is hosting its meetup at Mischief Toy Store this Tuesday evening, moderated by Grace Butkowski. The comic book being discussed at this meeting is volume 1 of Monstress.

Mansion in Mourning: Soothsaying and Spirit Boards

What: Arts, Educational
When: Tuesday, November 1st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: American Swedish Institute

The American Swedish Institute’s Mansion in Mourning is a “one-month-only exhibition highlighting historic objects related to mourning from the ASI collections.” On Tuesday, Lacey Prpić Hedke will lead an evening exploring the Victorian spiritualist movement, including “a ‘hidden mother’ photo booth, a mobile library, various forms of divination, and Victorian-Halloween themed tidbits and cocktails. Costumes are encouraged!”

Books & Bars: Kitchens of the Great Midwest

When: Tuesday, November 1st at 6:15 p.m.
Where: The Happy Gnome

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradahl.

Geek Date Night: The Book of Life

What: Trivia, Movies, Screening
When: Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clubhouse Jäger

Join Geek Date Night for another seasonally appropriate film and trivia night. This week’s 21+ screening is 2014’s The Book of Life, with a round of premovie trivia hosted by Rob Callahan. Trivia is at 7:00; the movie starts at 9:00.

YogaQuest Continues: Dungeons & Dragons

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest is “a unique blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling . . . unlike any yoga class you may have experienced before!” Guided by a certified yoga instructor who also serves as narrator, the class “embarks on an epic and often ridiculous journey through a popular fandom.”

Geeks Read: Stardoc

What: Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Geeks Read book club meets on the first Tuesday of every month. Doors open at 7:00; discussion starts at 7:30. As noted on the Facebook event page, this month’s read is Stardoc by S. L. Viehl.

It’s Complicated: Our Evolving Relationship With the Microbial World In and Around Us

What: Science & Tech, Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, November 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Camp Bar

The Petri Dish series of events from the University of Minnesota’s College of Biological Sciences features “live music, science-y fun and curiosity-driven conversations about how biology affects our lives and what it means for our future.” In this month’s event, a group consisting of “computational biology expert Dan Knights, microbial ecologist Michael Sadowsky and geomicrobiologist Cara Santelli” will discuss the complex relationships between microbes, the environment, and us.

Pokémon Win-a-Box Wednesday

When: Wednesday, November 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Highlander Games and Comics

Highlander Games and Comics in Columbia Heights is launching a new, all-ages monthly tournament series. Entry is $15; the first-place winner will get a sealed Pokémon booster box.

Play/Test

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, November 3rd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Play/Test is a weekly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers “the opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At Play/Test, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

One-Shot Comics: Black Panther Vol. 1

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

One-Shot Comics (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) meets monthly at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis to discuss a selected comic or graphic novel. November’s pick is volume 1 of Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Friday Night Magic

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, November 4th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them every Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, November 4th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

World Jubilee Fair Trade Market

What: Sale
When: Saturday, November 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Where: Wooddale Church (Eden Prairie)

The World Jubilee is “a volunteer driven, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the economic independence of artisans worldwide.” The group is hosting a fair-trade market where there will be jewelry, clothing, art, and more for sale.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Sport & Fitness, Screening, TV
When: Saturday, November 5th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Open Gaming

When: Saturday, November 5th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Free First Saturday: Boom, Bang, Crash

What: Arts
When: Saturday, November 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Museum

Admission is free at the Walker on the first Saturday of every month, when “families can enjoy live performances, films, gallery adventures, and hands-on art-making.” This month’s event will focus on music.

ComicCard

What: Convention
When: Saturday, November 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Where: Bloomington VFW

ComicCard conventions “combine comic books, sports and gaming cards and collectibles in one event.” Special guests at the November 5 convention will include comic creators Kenneth Rocafort, Tom Nguyen, Keith Champagne, Frank Fosco, and Otis Frampton, and Dave Wheeler; podcaster Adam Vermillion; and cosplayers Felicia Ann and Anna.

Board Game Day

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Saturday, November 5th at 10:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

The Saint Paul Board Game Group will be at Mischief Toy Store all day Saturday for free gaming. You can drop by for a little while or all day, bring your own game or use one on hand in the gaming room, and bring a friend or make new ones there.

13 Gears: An Eclectic Steampunk Event

What: Arts, Music
When: Saturday, November 5th from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Where: Grain Belt Bottling House

13 Gears is a family-friendly “eclectic steampunk event” featuring bands, artists, and activities, including artisans and merchants, a steampunk coloring contest, “Tea Dueling,” and performances by Sister Tree, and the Langer’s Ball.

MarsCon Masquerade Ball

What: Night Life, Party
When: Saturday, November 5th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Hilton Minneapolis St. Paul Airport Mall of America

The organizers of MarsCon (the “fun-run science fiction convention for all ages held every March in the Twin Cities area”) will be hosting the 10th annual MarsCon Masquerade Ball this Saturday night at the Hilton Minneapolis St. Paul Airport Mall of America. There will be a “meet and greet” and cocktails at the bar starting at 6:00 p.m. followed by the dance and costume contest at 7:00 p.m., so “grab a costume, bring a friend, and dance the night away!”

RPG Sunday Game Day

When: Sunday, November 6th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day on Sundays during the NFL season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.
