Geek Date Night: Idiocracy

Where: Clubhouse Jäger

In honor of Election Day, Geek Date Night’s 21+ film and trivia night this week is Idiocracy. After the polls close, head to Clubhouse Jäger for premovie trivia by Rob Callahan at 7:00 and the screening at 9:00.

Discussion of The Magician and the Fool by Barth Anderson

What: Books
When: Tuesday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Quatrefoil Library

Join the North Country Gaylaxians, the Twin Cities chapter of the Gaylactic Network, at Minneapolis nonprofit LGBTQ library Quatrefoil for a discussion of this by local author Barth Anderson.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia, Movies, TV
When: Wednesday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!”

Writers in Conversation: Women in Science Fiction

What: Books, Reading
When: Wednesday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

In this panel event, local sci-fi and fantasy authors Victorya Chase, Kelly Barnhill, Abra Staffin-Wiebe, and Lyda Morehouse will “discuss women in science fiction and writing female protagonists, along with a brief reading!”

PowerPoint Karaoke

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

In Fearless Comedy Productions’ PowerPoint Karaoke, “Come see four people give a PowerPoint presentation using slides they have never seen before and that make absolutely no sense!” Get $3 off your ticket with with a CONvergence badge, Geek card, Minnesota Fringe button, or Fantasy Flight Game Center receipt. Crafty Geek Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts, Crafts
When: Thursday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Star Wars: Destiny Preview Event

When: Friday, November 11th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

Fantasy Flight Games is holding a prerelease for its new Star Wars card and dice game on Friday night. The game publisher will be “offering demos and open play of Star Wars: Destiny, giving away unbelievable prizes, and featuring a one-of-a-kind panel on bringing Star Wars to life across different media.”

Friday Night Magic

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, November 4th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them every Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Read the Book/See the Movie

The Geek Partnership Society’s Read the Book/See the Movie club meets on the second Friday of every month to “expand our reading and film horizons by comparing and contrasting films to their source material.” The location for this event rotates between the Waterbury Center and club members’ homes, so email the organizers at [email protected] to learn the location of this month’s meetup and for more information about the featured book and movie.

Gizmonic Institute Presents: Teenagers from Outer Space

What: Screening, Movies
When: Friday, November 11th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Schmidt Artist Lofts

The Gizmonic Institute is a monthly Mystery Science Theater 3000 viewing party. “We like to eat, drink, socialize and watch MST3K. Join us! It’s free!” This month’s selection is the 1959 Tom Graeff sci-fi movie Teenagers from Outer Space. To keep up with news about future screenings, join the Gizmonic Institute Facebook group.

Where: The Lodge at Crooked Lake (Siren, WI)

Just across the border in Siren, Wisconsin, this weekend is OmegaCon, a 21+ twice-yearly “relax-a-con” dedicated to science fiction and fantasy. “We’ll eat, drink, and be merry. We’ll play video games and board games and unwind in the hot tub. We’ll watch movies, vintage Saturday morning cartoons, and let our creative juices flow with arts and crafts.”

Tsuinshi Anime Showing

What: Screening, Anime, TV, Movies
When: Friday, November 11th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club,” and at which they will show various anime movies and series.

Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour

What: Meetup, Cosplay
When: Friday, November 11th at 1o:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

At this social event for cosplayers, costumers, and other crafters, you can “talk about how-tos, where-do-you-gets, and anything else cosplay/costuming, or just life in general.” Meet up, have a drink, and hit the dance floor. The gathering officially ends at 11:30, but you can stick around afterwards for the midnight lip-sync contest. No cover if you’re in costume.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, November 12th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

YogaQuest will not be meeting on Tuesday this week due to Election Day, but you can still hit the YQdio this weekend for Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Gryffindorks Second Annual Coats and Cloak Drive

Where: The Palette and Purl

Join the local chapter of Potterhead charitable group Gryffindorks is having a coat drive all day Saturday to benefit the Link MN. “Can’t make it on the 12th? Apparate on over at anytime to the Palette & Purl, or to our 2nd drop site at Geek Partnership Society, located at 1121 NE Jackson St #106 in Minneapolis. Drop offs welcome during regular business hours at both locations now through November 18th.”

The MN Publishing Tweet Up

When: Saturday, November 12th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Common Good Books

The Minnesota Book Publishers’ Roundtable and the MN Publishing Tweet Up have partnered to host monthly meetups for publishing professionals, colleagues, and book lovers. This month’s meetup will be at Common Good Books in St. Paul. “Coffee and snacks will be provided.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game 2016 Fellowship Event

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, November 12th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

Yet another event at Fantasy Flight this week is this annual gathering at which “fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game can explore even more of Middle Earth.” This year, “an epic adventure arrives in The Siege of Annuminas, a scenario so exciting it will be offered at both Gen Con and to stores for the 2016 Fellowship Event!” Entry is $15 and limited to 115 players, who will all receive a copy of The Siege of Annuminas, an alternate art card, and this year’s official Fellowship playmat.

Clockwerks Brewing Grand Opening Celebration

When: Saturday, November 12th from 12:00 to 11:59 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Steampunk-themed brewery Clockwerks Brewing is celebrating the official opening of its space in downtown Minneapolis all Saturday afternoon and evening. Expect “door prizes and other fun,” music by DJ Keith Millions, and “the release of a new beer just for the grand opening.”

Mathew Zefeldt: Desktop Exhibition Opening

What: Arts
When: Saturday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Soap Factory

Saturday marks the opening night for Desktop, an exhibition featuring “paintings that are completely analog in terms of process, but that reflect our contemporary reality of screen culture.” Artist and University of Minnesota professor Mathew Zefeldt “works with a specific cast of characters: bricks, two-by-fours, statue heads, gradients, dutch still life paintings, paint rags, junk food, patterns, video game characters, gestural marks, and emojis in compositions inspired by smartphone home screens, desktop arrangements from personal computers and the aesthetics of image editing software.”

GPS Movie Night

When: Saturday, November 12th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society invites you to attend a science-fiction double feature this Saturday night. If you can’t figure out what the films are based on the oh-so-mysterious descriptions on the event page, RSVP and find out the details in the confirmation email.

Akihabara Anime Swap Meet and Yard Sale

What: Sale
When: Sunday, November 13th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

“Declutter your closets and fill them back up again” at Anime Twin Cities’ free annual swap meet. “This year the swap meet will be expanded to allow items to be sold as well, so don’t worry if you don’t have anything to trade. Stop by and see what’s up for grabs!”

The Saber Legion Minnesota Meet

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, October 16th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: USA Karate

The Saber Legion is “a constantly growing group of people focused on safe, fun lightsaber combat.” The group will be holding a meet at USA Karate in Maple Grove, and you can come and watch or see about training with the group. See the Facebook event page or TSL website for full details.
