Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, December 19th through Sunday, December 25th.

Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts
When: Monday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Tabletop Tuesdays

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

In this casual game night, bring your own games or make use of Glitch’s tabletop game library. Organizers will be there to help teach games, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Knitting Social

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Come together with fellow knitters, and represent your favorite football team with the Scoreboard Knit-Along Project. This free event is hosted at the Minnesota History Center and is inspired by the current exhibit Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Star Wars: Destiny

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games

Come for the inaugural Star Wars: Destiny tournament at Level Up Games in St. Paul. The store plans to run a weekly tournament with a $5 entry fee. This is a great opportunity to meet other players and test your skills. Crap Craft

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 6:45 p.m.
Where: Common Roots Cafe

Commemorate what many have described as a crappy year with Grown-Up Club (“a monthly activity group for reluctant adults”) in the most appropriate way possible: crafting your very own poo emoji ornament. $5 suggested donation for materials.

Café Scientifique: Moving Minnesota

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. doors)
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “Moving Minnesota: Re-inventing the Bell Museum Dioramas” with Don Luce, curator of exhibits at the Bell Museum.

YogaQuest Continues: Star Wars Holiday Special

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is the Star Wars Holiday Special in order to celebrate Wookiee Life Day.

The Not-So-Silent Planet

What: Open Mic
When: Tuesday, December 20th at 8:00 pm
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (doors and sign-up at 8:00). The featured performer for this month’s session is Joe Bozic; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

Elf-Care: Putting it All Together

When: Wednesday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Stay focused and grounded in order to handle holiday stress. This is the last in YogaQuest’s Elf-Care: Self-Care Boot Camp for the Holidays, a six-class series aimed at keeping you healthy during the holidays.

Winter Solstice GothiCoffee: Venus De Mars, Fische, Ivy Fae

What: Meetup
When: Wednesday, December 21st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Reverie Cafe and Bar

The Winter Solstice is a special social night for GothiCoffee and the Twin Cities Elysium Society, bringing Venus De Mars, Fische, and Ivy Fae to Reverie for a night of music and poetry. $10 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds, and GothiCoffee is dedicated to providing a safe space for all.

Dog Soldiers

What: Screening, Movies
When: Wednesday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Microcinema

Trash Film Debauchery presents Dog Soldiers, the inaugural screening of a series of werewolf films. In this installment, “A small squad of British soldiers stumble across a bloody massacre and its sole survivor. Without transport or communications, the group is forced to seek shelter in a farmhouse and wait for dawn.”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, December 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, December 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

A Klingon Christmas Carol

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, December 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Historic Mounds Theatre

Learn the true meaning of courage and honor as the tale of SQuja’ is retold in the last 2016 performance of A Klingon Christmas Carol. The show features Klingon dialogue with English supertitles. Click here for our review!

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Meetup, Anime
When: Friday, December 23rd at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club,” and at which they will show various anime movies and series.

Friday Night Magic

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, December 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night with a booster Draft. Entry is $15; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.
