Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, January 30th through Sunday, February 5th.

Knitting Social

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Tuesday, January 31st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Get social and hang out with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available.

YogaQuest Continues: The Hobbit

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, January 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is The Hobbit.

PLAY/TEST

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, February 2nd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

PLAY/TEST is a monthly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers the “opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

One-Shot Comics: March, Book Two

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

One-Shot Comics (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) meets monthly at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis to discuss a selected comic or graphic novel. February’s pick is part two of the graphic novel March by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell.

How To Build Your Own Survival Kit

What: Crafting, Educational
When: Thursday, February 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Future Necessities

Prep for doomsday (or a fun hike in the woods) with this three-hour course that covers the basics of prepping a survival kit. The purpose of the class is to teach you how to build a kit, focusing on survival basics such as shelter, fire, water, and food. There is a $30 materials cost for the class.

Harry Potter Book Night

What: Books, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Pleasant Hill Library

Young witches, wizards, and curious muggles are encouraged to attend Science Outside the Box’s Harry Potter Book Night. This event is intended for Harry Potter fans from the ages of 8 to 18 and focuses on potions, as well as general tests of Harry Potter knowledge.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a weekly comics chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Magic Madness

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, February 3rd at 6:00 p.m., Saturday February 4th at 11:00 a.m., Sunday February 5th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

This event is a weekend-long set of tournaments to celebrate one of the most enduring modern games, Magic: The Gathering. There will be casual and scheduled tournaments all weekend, along with prizes and other fun. Check the website for specific scheduling details and entry fees.

Friday Night Magic Aether Revolt Draft Event

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, February 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. The space is limited to 24 players, so arrive early to get a spot. Participation is $15 for draft events.

SuperCon XXIV

What: Meetup, Movies & Films, Screening
When: Friday, February 3rd at 8:00 p.m. to Sunday February 5th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: 1292 Jessie Street, St. Paul, MN 55130

Come to the 24th year of SuperCon, a convention primarily focused on chilling out through decadent room parties and screenings of things running the gamut, from animation to science fiction. The con originally sprung up in response to the Superbowl being hosted in Minneapolis back in the 90s. See the website for registration details.

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Friday, February 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Saturday, February 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at YogaQuest this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

GPS UGG Open Gaming

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Saturday, February 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

RPG Sunday Gaming

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Sunday, February 5th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to another type of game day on Sundays during the NFL season: RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Sunday, February 5th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Magic Madness will also be taking place at the Source this weekend, so space may be limited.
