YogaQuest Continues: Crimson Peak

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. See if you can convince yourself everything is awesome with this week’s theme: Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak.

Victorian Poetry Slam

What: Educational, Books, Performance
When: Tuesday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: James J. Hill House

Come on down if you’re ready to throw down in the Victorian Poetry Slam. This Valentine’s Day, the Minnesota Historical Society presents an evening of entertainment as actors in 1890’s garb read the works of Dickinson, Poe, Longfellow, and Browning. Be ready for humor, romance and more. Daring audience members are invited to bring a short poem to read. This lovely evening’s entertainment is $12.

Where: Spyhouse Coffee

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

Trash Film Debauchery: Full Eclipse

What: Screening, Movies
When: Wednesday, February 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Microcinema

Trash Film Debauchery presents Full Eclipse, the third in a series of werewolf film screenings. This film takes the lens of lycanthropy and applies it to a Los Angeles detective portrayed by Mario Van Peebles.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew: Basics of Ravelry

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” This week’s special focus is on Ravelry, a social network and organizing tool for fiber arts.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls-only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.


What: Movies, Screening
When: Thursday, February 16th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Pepito’s Parkway Theater

The Parkway Theater presents a screening of RoboCop, a satirical action classic that has recently been hailed as extremely relevant to today’s world. Come for the free admission, stay for the couches, beer, and popcorn with real butter.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, February 16th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Con of the North

What: Gaming, Meetup, Convention
When: Friday, February 17th at 12:00 p.m. through Sunday, February 19th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

Roll dice, meet fun geeks, learn some games, or jump back into old favorites. Con of the North is a non-profit gaming convention held in the Twin Cities catering to roleplaying, miniatures, board, card, LARP, and computer gaming. Pre-registration is closed, however on-site registration is still open. All of the available gaming space has been used for events, meaning that there will be a plethora of games to choose from.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, February 17th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour at Ground Zero

What: Meetup, Cosplay
When: Friday, February 17th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

At this social event for cosplayers, costumers, and other crafters, you can “talk about how-tos, where-do-you-gets, and anything else cosplay/costuming, or just life in general.” Meet up, have a drink, and hit the dance floor. The gathering officially ends at 11:30, but you can stick around afterwards for the midnight lip-sync contest. No cover if you’re in costume.

Penumbra Theatre at 40: Art, Race and a Nation on Stage

What: Arts
When: Saturday, February 18th at 10:00 a.m. through Sunday, February 19th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

This exhibit explores the dynamic 40-year history of the Penumbra Theatre in the Twin Cities, ranging from social justice to the Black Arts movement. Stories are told from the perspective of a variety of creatives and artifacts. You’ll be able to see artifacts from the theater and experience a set from the play Fences.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Meetup, Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, February 18th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

GPS UGG Open Gaming

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, February 18th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Professional Wrestling: Fox vs Huge

What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup
When: Saturday, February 18th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Chanhassen American Legion

Chanhassen Minnesota will play host to an intense grudge match this Saturday when Terry Fox and Pete Huge face off at the American Legion. Fox and Huge aren’t the only ones on the line-up; stay for a hair vs. mustache match and other talented wrestlers. Doors at 7:00 p.m. for an 8:00 p.m. bell time, tickets are $12.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, February 19th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Tol-Con and Bauhaus Brew Labs Present “An Unexpected Party”

What: Meetup, Gaming, Trivia, Crafting, Cosplay, Nightlife
When: Sunday, February 19th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Bauhaus Brew Labs

Bauhaus Brew Labs presents a Tolkien mini-convention with a variety of fun activities running from the afternoon into the night. There will be trivia, dancing, crafting, a costume contest, board games, and a DJ for late-night dancing. There’s a $15 cover for this family friendly event.
