This Week in Geek Header for the week of February 20th

Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 20th through Sunday, February 26th.

Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts
When: Monday, February 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience

What: Music
When: Monday, February 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Xcel Energy Center

See the music from Game of Thrones performed live, featuring the series’ composer, Ramin Djawadi. Tickets were still available at the time of this posting.

Bears vs. Babies Playtest Party

What: Gaming
When: Tuesday, February 21st at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Metropolitan State University Library and Learning Center

Come to the Metropolitan State University Library for the only Minnesota playtest of Bears vs. Babies, a new game by Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal and Ethan Lee, the duo responsible for Exploding Kittens. This event is free, but space is limited and reservations are strongly encouraged.

The Not-So-Silent Planet

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, February 21st at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (doors and sign-up at 8:00). The featured performer for this month’s session is Duck Washington; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

The Legend of Zelda: Art and Artifacts

What: Trivia, Meetup
When: Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Barnes & Noble Roseville

Link up with your fellow Zelda fans for a night of trivia, scavenger hunts, and a chance to win an exclusive enamel pin from Dark Horse Publishing.

GPS Open Meeting

What: Meetup
When: Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society holds open meetings every quarter, open to members, partners, geek groups and the general public. The focus is on what GPS has been doing with the community, upcoming events, and needs for volunteers. Attending this meeting and one other enables volunteers with 20+ hours to vote for the GPS board in May.

Café Scientifique

When: Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “Forest Keepers,” with J. Scott Dodds, an award-winning ethnographic filmmaker. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

YogaQuest Continues: The OC

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. See if you can convince yourself everything is awesome with this week’s theme: The OC!

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Meetup, Trivia
When: Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly.

Club Book: Nnedi Okorafor

What: Books, Reading
When: Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Roseville Public Library

Club Book is hosting best-selling sci-fi and fantasy author Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death, Zahrah the Windseeker) for a public discussion at the Roseville Public Library.

Lodestone Coffee D&D

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, February 23rd at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Lodestone Coffee and Games

Lodestone Coffee and Games in Minnetonka hosts Dungeons & Dragons gaming every two weeks in the store. It is meant to be open to players of all skill levels, and they’re seeking more players and DMs. Lodestone has gaming space and coffee on offer.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Waterbury Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls-only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Blade Runner

What: Movies, Screening
When: Thursday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Pepito’s Parkway Theater

The Parkway Theater presents a screening of Blade Runner, the science-fiction classic set in the distant future of 2017. Come for the free admission; stay for the couches, beer, and popcorn with real butter.

Loud at the Library: Jillian Re with Adam Levy

What: Meetup, Books, Nightlife
When: Friday, February 24th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Downtown St. Paul Central Library

The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library concert series Loud at the Library continues its 2017 season on Friday with live music from Jillian Re and Adam Levy. You can get a free beer provided by Summit Brewing if you bring a current library card and tour the library’s Innovation Lab makerspace before the show. Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, February 24th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

DataRescue Twin Cities

What: Meetup, Educational
When: Friday, February 24th at 1:00 p.m., and Saturday, February 25th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Humphrey School of Public Affairs, 50b

Help protect federally produced datasets before they are gone by collecting and archiving them. Passionate community members, coders, archivists and librarians are all needed. Federally produced data are critically important to research, policy, and and informed public. This data could be under threat due to changes in policy and funding, but you can help.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

When: Friday, February 24th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Meetup, Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, February 25th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Blizzard World Minneapolis ComiCon

What: Conventions, Comics
When: Saturday, February 25th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: MTS Charter Schools

Check out vendors, artists, writers, and more at this one-day local convention. Get in free if you’re wearing a costume! (And if you’re not, it’s only $4 for adults and $3 for kids.) Not familiar with this con? Check out our article from last year.

Make It Sew! Saturday Salon and Tea

What: Meetup, Crafting
When: Saturday, February 25th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

Enjoy some tea and the company of other Twin Cities sewing people and organizations. This event will be held in room 107 of Event Horizon, which should be a great opportunity to spread fabric out and get cutting done for sewing. This event is sponsored by the Crafty Geek subclub.

The Midwest Independent Wrestling Rumble

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, February 25th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Murzyn Hall

It’s been seven years since an MIW rumble like this. Come for over-the-top wrestling between 15 contestants and a title fight between “Genuine Article” Chris Jordan and longtime bitter rival James Dawson. This event is $12 and is family friendly, including face-painting and more. (Get to know Chris Jordan and find out what an MIW match is like in our recent article!)

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Movie, Meetup
When: Saturday, February 25th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, February 26th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sunday is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam

What: Meetup, Comics, Gaming
When: Sunday, February 26th at 12:45 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault Games

Gender Jam is a safe social meetup for trans, gender-nonconforming, and questioning youth hosted at Dreamers Vault Games for video games, board games, snacks, and togetherness. A D&D campaign is likely to be in the works. Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on the Twin Cities Geek Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) or visit Gender Jam on Facebook for more information.
