Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, February 27th through Sunday, March 5th.

Knitting Social

What: Crafting, Meeting
When: Tuesday, February 28th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Get social and hang out with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available.

YogaQuest Continues: The Force Awakens

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. See if you can convince yourself everything is awesome with this week’s theme: Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

Drunk Queer History

What: Educational, Nightlife
When: Wednesday, March 1st at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Reverie Cafe + Bar

Gadfly presents a night of storytelling focused on queer issues in the mold of “Drunk History,” with trans-rights activist and city-council candidate Andrea Jenkins as storyteller. These important stories will be enhanced with improv performances. The proceeds from the $15 ticket price will go to the March production of “And Then They Fell,” put on by Gadfly.

New Comic Book Day

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Wednesday, March 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Day Block Brewing Company

This 21+ event at Day Block Brewing is the first in a weekly series of new comic book days. See the debut of interesting new comic books, and hear sets from local comedians. This week’s hosts are Grace Thomas and special guest host Max Friedman. This week’s focus will be Tank Girl.

When: Thursday, March 2nd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

PLAY/TEST is a monthly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers the “opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Thursday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls-only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

One-Shot Comics: March, Book 3

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Thursday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

One-Shot Comics (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) meets monthly at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis to discuss a selected comic or graphic novel. March’s pick is March, Book 3 by civil rights hero and congressman John Lewis with John Aydin.

MarsCon 2017: Dragons in Space

What: Gaming, Meetup, Convention, Books, Anime, Cosplay, Film
When: Friday, March 3rd at 12:00 p.m. to Sunday, March 5th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport/Mall of America

MarsCon 2017 has a little bit of something for everyone. Whether your preferred geek flavor is anime, gaming, cosplay, books, film, or science, you’re in for a treat. Come for celebrity guests such as Jeffrey Combs (of Star Trek and Re-Animator fame), and stick around for informative panels, crafting events, anime screenings, and more. Check the website for schedule and registration details. Rates vary, but for adults the whole weekend costs $65.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, March 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, March 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, March 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

GPS UGG Open Gaming

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, March 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Game of Crowns

What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup
When: Saturday, March 4th t 6:00 p.m.
Where: Fridley VFW

Come see the return of 7Star Wrestling to the Fridley VFW for a night packed with wrestlers, including Chainsaw King, Darin Corbin, Airwolf, and a dozen others. This is an all-ages show; tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for kids. Who will win the game of crowns?

Saturday Night Space Opera

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, March 4th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Saturday Night Space Opera hosts monthly science-fiction role-playing events at the Source. The event rotates between different role-playing systems and settings. This is a free event, and organizers encourage interested people to RSVP on their website in order to give an idea of headcount.

Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters

What: Arts
When: Sunday, March 5th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

The Minneapolis Institute of Art is hosting At Home with Monsters, a collection of paintings, drawings, artifacts, and concept film art from Guillermo del Toro’s home base in Los Angeles. The exhibit is organized based on Guillermo del Toro’s inspirations, including magic, occultism, death, and the afterlife. March 5 is opening day, and it runs until May 28th. Shieldmaiden Sunday

When: Sunday, March 5th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sunday is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

RPG Sunday Game Day

When: Sunday, March 5th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.
