YogaQuest Continues: The Lego Movie

What: Sport & Fitness
When: Tuesday, February 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. See if you can convince yourself everything is awesome with this week’s theme: The Lego Movie.

Books and Bars: American Gods

What: Books, Meetup
When: Tuesday, February 7th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: The Happy Gnome

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is American Gods by local favorite Neil Gaiman.

TC Trek Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, February 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!”

Social Science: Mythic Creatures Masquerade

What: Meetup, Educational, Nightlife
When: Thursday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

Social Science is the themed “adult night” at the Science Museum of Minnesota, “welcoming those 21 and over to grab a drink, enjoy the museum, and experience innovative programming.” The theme this Thursday night is Mythic Creatures, which focuses on the relationship between nature, myth, and the boundless human imagination. Costumes encouraged!

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, February 9th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

The Terminator

What: Movies, Screening
When: Thursday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Pepito’s Parkway Theater

The Parkway Theater presents a screening of The Terminator, a classic that allows you to see a former governor wreak cyborg carnage while searching for Sarah Connor. Come for the free admission, stay for the couches, beer, and popcorn with real butter.

Studio Payne Presents #foreveralone, an Anti–Valentine’s Day Art Show

When: Friday, February 10th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Studio Payne

A timely art showing focused on the anti-love scene, heartbreak, and being alone. Valentine’s Day can leave a lot of folks feeling down, and this show might help someone feel a bit less alone.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, February 10th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Read the Book/See the Movie

What: Movies & Films, Meetup, Books
When: Friday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: TBD (see event listing)

Meet up with fellow geeks to discuss a book and then see the film adaptation of it. This is a free regular event that rotates between Event Horizon and members’ homes.

Tsuinshi Anime Club

What: Screening, Meetup
When: Friday, February 10th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this co-sponsored anime club,” and at which they will show various anime movies and series.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

What: Meetup, Gaming
When: Saturday, February 11th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Queen Charlotte’s Birthday Ball

What: Educational, Sports & Fitness, Nightlife
When: Saturday February 11th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: North West Company Fur Post

The Minnesota Historical Society invites you to come out and put on your dancing shoes for a night of spirited country dancing at the North West Company Fur Post in Pine City. This evening focuses on the early 18th century pastime of country dancing. Dance steps will be taught and called at the ball. Dress to impress in period or semiformal attire. $35 for nonmembers, $32 for members.

Minnesota Independent Wrestling

What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup
When: Saturday, February 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Holy Nativity Lutheran Church

Minnesota Independent Wrestling and Midwest Wrestling are teaming up for their ninth annual event to benefit the Holy Nativity Youth Ministry, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit Avenues for Youth, a Twin Cities non-profit which assists homeless youth. $12 gets you a night of top-notch independent wrestling and helps out great causes.

The Ultimate Valentine’s Singles Party

What: Nightlife, Meetup
When: Saturday, February 11th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: 508 Bar and Restaurant

Don’t dread Valentine’s Day—come on out and meet other professional singles at a party put on by Network Date Connect at the 508 Bar and Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. Your $25 or $30 cover gets you in for drink specials, ice-breakers, prize drawings, and appetizers. The organizers expect to have 150 or more participants, so there are bound to be some single geeks.

A Civilized Viewing Party

When: Saturday, February 11th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub

A Civilized Heresy presents A Civilized Viewing Party, an opportunity to mix and mingle with fans of political comedy geeks before a group watch of the next episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Alec Baldwin.

Level Up Ladies

When: Sunday, February 12th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games MN

Level Up Ladies is a family-friendly board-game day at Level Up Games. There will be board-game demos and discounts, so it’s a great opportunity to level up by learning new games.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

When: Sunday, February 12th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
