YogaQuest Continues: Guardians of the Galaxy

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. Get yourself ready to to defend the galaxy with this week’s theme: Guardians of the Galaxy

May Kotatsu

Anime Twin Cities invites you to a casual night of conversation and company with fellow anime geeks. Bring games, knitting, homework or other stuff to work on in the company of others.

Books & Bars: Locally Laid

When: Tuesday, May 2nd at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Locally Laid by Lucie Amundsen.

Tabletop Tuesday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Tuesday, May 2nd at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

In this casual game night, bring your own games or make use of Glitch’s tabletop game library. Organizers will be there to help teach games, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Geeks Read

What: Books, Meetup
When: Tuesday, May 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

Explore the secrets of the written word with Geeks Read. This group meets once per month to discuss a book with fellow geeks. This month’s book is Armor by John Steakey. After the discussion the group will be choosing the next book.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, May 4th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

PLAY/TEST is a monthly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers the “opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome.

One-Shot Comics: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1 and 2

When: Thursday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

One-Shot Comics (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) meets monthly at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis to discuss a selected comic or graphic novel. May’s pick is the first two volumes of Marvel’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Unite: National Day of Prayer

What: Meetup, Charity
When: Thursday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: US Bank Stadium

Come together with community members (geek and nongeek alike) for a night of nondenominational worship and togetherness for a common cause. This night will benefit Second Harvest Heartland and will involve music and speakers from a variety of local organizations. Bring a nonperishable food item to help.

Wizard World Comic Con

What: Conventions
When: Friday, May 5th at 4:00 p.m.–Sunday, May 7th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

For 2017, the Minneapolis edition of this national convention will feature stars from Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Star Trek, among others—plus panels, performances, costume contests, and more. (Twin Cities Geek is giving away a pair of Saturday day passes to this convention, and you have until 7:00 p.m. Sunday to enter!)

Art History Talk: Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters

What: Arts, Educational
When: Friday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Wet Paint

Jim Robinson of St. Paul’s the Art Academy discusses and analyzes works from the Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters exhibit, showing at the Minneapolis Institute of Art through the end of the month. This is a free talk, but space is almost filled, so call (651) 698-6431 to reserve your spot!

GlitchCon 2017

What: Gaming, Conventions
When: Friday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m.–Sunday, May 7th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: The Soap Factory

GlitchCon is a digital games festival held at the Soap Factory in Minneapolis, lasting throughout the weekend. This is the place to be for makers of digital games, with keynote speakers from across the industry for educational sessions on game making, speed-talks, and access to the Minnecade. This post is too short to do this event justice, so check the website for more details. Advance tickets start at $40 for students, and $50 for general admission.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Lounge 2.0

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Yet another event this week at GlitchHQ, Lounge 2.0 is a get-together for people who are passionate about games and want to spend their Friday nights in like-minded company. Glitch offers consoles, PC stations, and tabletop and digital games. If you’re passionate about a game, bring it to share with the community.

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Free Comic Book Day

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Saturday, May 6th
Where: Comic shops everywhere

Enjoy comic-book giveaways, special guests, snacks, and more at Minnesota’s many comic stores for this special day, held every year on the first Saturday in May. Watch Twin Cities Geek for our guide to Free Comic Book Day events in Minnesota, coming later this week!

Level Up

After gaining all of this experience with various yoga poses, you’ve earned the right to level up and dive deeper into familiar poses, and even learn new feats (poses). There is a $15 charge for this advanced class.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, May 6th at 10:00 a.m.

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

GPS UGG Open Gaming

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Saturday, May 6th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Rocky Horror Picture Show Extravaganza Featuring Barry Bostwick

What: Movies, Screenings
When: Saturday, May 6th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Riverview Theater

Barry Bostwick, who played Brad Major in 1975’s Rocky Horror Picture Show, is in town for Wizard World Minneapolis, and while he’s here he’s teaming up with Transvestite Soup—the Twin Cities “shadow cast” for monthly performances at the Uptown Theatre—to host a very special Rocky Horror screening! In addition to the usual hilarity and audience participation you can expect from any Transvestite Soup showing, original props and costumes from the classic cult film will be on display at the theater.

Batman Mini Tournament

What: Games, Crafting
When: Sunday, May 7th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Come to the Source for a tournament of the Batman miniature game. Entry costs $10, and there will be a three-round tournament to test your skills against other players. Fully painted minis are not required.

May Day Parade

What: Meetup, Community, Arts and Theater
When: Sunday, May 7th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: 25th St. East and Bloomington Ave. South for the parade; Powderhorn Park for the ceremony

Join thousands of people for a celebration of the returning warmth and summer with a cavalcade of creative puppets, masks, and more, with a variety of Twin Cities groups covering a variety of interests from politics to community organizations. The event begins with a parade before moving to Powderhorn Park for its yearly ceremony. This event is organized by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre and community organizations.

Shieldmaiden Sundays

When: Sunday, May 7th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, May 7th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.
