Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 5th through Sunday, June 11th.

Tabletop Tuesdays

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

In this casual game night, bring your own games or make use of Glitch’s tabletop game library. Organizers will be there to help teach games, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Universe Criterion Club

What: Gaming
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Universe Games

Come to Universe Games for an evening of card and board gaming while helping to build an excellent games library. Participants pay $5 for weekly membership and access to a curated (and growing) library of games. The $5 is returned as a voucher to spend in-store. Help build the greatest games library in Minneapolis by providing your expertise.

Behind the Seams: Costuming in August Wilson’s Plays

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

With the right costumes, a production can really take the audience back to a different time or place. This event focuses on the ways that costuming was used in August Wilson’s plays to transport audiences to the 1970s, with a social hour beforehand and time to explore the Penumbra Theater at 40 exhibit. This is a free event, but preregistration is recommended. The talk itself begins at 7:00.

Books & Bars: Sweetbitter

What: Books, Meetup
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Sweetbitter.

June Kotatsu

What: Meetup
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Davanni’s Pizza and Hot Hoagies

Kotatsu is a monthly opportunity to hang out with fellow Anime Twin Cities members and fans in a casual environment. Bring card games, writing, knitting or just yourself, and enjoy a public hangout session. Look for the table with the ATC logo.

Clean Water Action Movie Night

What: Community, Movies
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

The Parkway Theater will be hosting a screening of How to Let Go of the World and Love all the Things that Climate Can’t Change. This film attempts a hopeful message in the face of possible calamity, and looks at what we will hold on to even after climate change. There will be a brief discussion after the movie. Tickets are $7 in advance and $9 at the door.

YogaQuest Continues: The Mummy

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This Week’s theme is The Mummy.

Geek Date Night: Romancing the Stone

What: Movies, Screening, Trivia
When: Tuesday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clubhouse Jäger

Geek Date Night is hosting a screening of Romancing the Stone at Clubhouse Jäger. Compete in premovie trivia with Rob Callahan at 7:00 for a chance to win a $50 bar tab, then stay at 9:00 for the screening.

Social Science: Pixar Preview

What: Science & Technology, Educational
When: Thursday, June 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum Of Minnesota

Get a chance to preview the Pixar exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota. The Science Behind Pixar focuses on the complex and high-tech filmmaking process behind bringing beloved films like Toy Story to the screen. This Social Science event presents an opportunity to grab a beer and enjoy special programs at the museum, and is 21-plus. Tickets are $19.95.

Bird~Brain: A Celebration of Matt Mauch’s New Book of Poetry

What: Books
When: Thursday, June 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl and Theater

Celebrate the launch of Bird~Brain, a new book of poetry by local writer Matt Mauch, with a reading at the Bryant-Lake Bowl. Tickets are $8 at the door or $6 in advance.

Lonely Arts: Nonfiction

What: Books
When: Thursday, June 8th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Loft Literary Center

Spend two hours using speed-dating methodology to find a critique partner for your nonfiction work at this unique event put on by the Loft Literary Center. While there’s no guarantee of finding a match, previous Lonely Arts events have had an 86 percent success rate. This event costs $15 for nonmembers and $10 for Loft members.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Meetup, Arts
When: Thursday, June 8th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, June 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, June 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Read the Book/See the Movie

When: Friday, June 9th at 7:00 p.m.

This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m., the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information.

Geek Rock Night at Wild Tymes

Do you want to rock out with your pocket protector out, and in the company of other geeks? Geek Rock Night at Wild Tymes is the perfect opportunity. Come for a free night of geeky songs about Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and more by Autoclamp, the Faithful Sidekicks, Beth Kinderman and the Player Characters, and the Feng Shui Ninjas.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

When: Friday, June 9th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Geek Partnership Society

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck Minneapolis Appearance

When: Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Ridgedale Center

The official Hello Kitty food truck will be at Ridgedale from 10:00 a.m. until around 8:00 p.m., so make sure to take this opportunity to enjoy a variety of cute treats while supplies last.

MN Publishing Tweet Up

What: Books, Community
When: Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: SubText Books

The MN Publishing Tweet Up will be gathering at SubText Books for networking, coffee, and sharing a love of books and publishing. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow publishing geeks in a great community bookstore.

St. Paul’s Brewing History Bus Tour

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, June 10th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Summit Brewing

This 21-plus event is an opportunity to delve into St. Paul’s beer-soaked past with a brewery tour, which will feature a look at the old Schmidt Brewery and tours of Flat Earth Brewery and Summit. This is a three-hour tour, and includes beer samples in the $50 price tag. Note that there will be a couple of blocks of walking over uneven surfaces.

Northern Spark 2017

When: Saturday, June 10th at 8:59 p.m.
Where: St. Paul (see listing for more details)

St. Paul will be illuminated from sundown to sunup on the night of June 10th for the annual Northern Spark, an arts festival featuring more than 70 art projects along the Green Line and throughout the city. See amazing pieces put together by diverse organizations across the Twin Cities, enjoy music, and more, all focusing on the theme of climate change.

Movies on the Lake: E.T.

What: Movies
When: Saturday, June 10th at 9:15 p.m.
Where: Como Dockside

This free movie screening will be shown at Como Dockside and will be first-come first-serve for seating. The movie will be an old geek favorite, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, featuring the beloved tale of two beings reaching out across a huge gap for the sake of friendship and connection. The venue has seating for roughly 300 people, but capacity for around 700, so feel free to bring picnic blankets and chairs.

Family Day: Puppet Parade

What: Arts, Family
When: Sunday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

On this family day, puppetry will be the main focus. See puppets, meet puppet creators, and spend time learning to make your own. This event is intended for the whole family and is museum-wide.

Minnesota Crossword Tournament

What: Gaming, Educational
When: Sunday, June 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Landmark Center

Take that giant geeky brain of yours to the test in order to win accolades in the Minnesota Crossword Tournament. There will be individual and team competitions at novice and expert skill levels, with 15-minute rounds for puzzle solving. After three rounds, the competitors with the highest scores will move on to the championship, where they will need to complete a puzzle in front of an audience. Shieldmaiden Sunday

When: Sunday, June 11th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
