Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 9th.

Movies in the Parks: Captain America: Civil War

What: Movies
When: Monday, July 3rd at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Nicollet Island Park

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is presenting movies in various parks throughout the city over the course of the summer, and one of the screenings this week is Captain America: Civil War, a tale of values conflicting with friendship, and a certain neighborhood Spider-Man having fun in the middle of it. This free showing begins 15 minutes after sundown. (And if you want even more Civil War, it’s the theme at YogaQuest on Tuesday!)

Independence Day Celebration

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, July 4th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fort Snelling

Celebrate the birthday of this nation with a variety of ceremonies, military parades, and learning opportunities. There are activities throughout the day, including fife lessons, mock battles, and chances to learn about the struggles for freedom of all Americans, including enslaved peoples, Native Americans, and women.

Tabletop Tuesdays

What: Gaming
When: Tuesday, July 4th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

In this casual game night, bring your own games or make use of Glitch’s tabletop game library. Organizers will be there to help teach games, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

9 Nights of Music: Salsa de Sol

What: Music, Community
When: Tuesday, July 4th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Hear some catchy tunes and learn how to dance while experiencing the tapestry of Twin Cities culture at 9 Nights of Music. This weekly event begins with dance instruction before leading to musical performances. This week’s performer is Salsa Del Sol.

Bar Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Tuesday, July 4th at 6:45 p.m.
Where: New Bohemia Uptown

United Geeks of Gaming will be assembling for Sporcle-based trivia at New Bohemia in Uptown on Tuesday nights. Sporcle is a team-based trivia night with a focus on general trivia, so whatever you geek out about, you may be able to help your team. United Geeks of Gaming has a regular team, and attendees can also form splinter teams or go solo. The trivia is free.

YogaQuest Continues: Captain America: Civil War

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, July 4th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YogaQuest

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Captain America: Civil War (a movie that is also playing at Nicollet Island Park on Monday—see above).

Books & Bars: Dark Matter

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, July 5th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar & Hall

Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Dark Matter.

Magic Night: Amonkhet Booster Draft

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, July 5th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Enjoy a Magic: The Gathering Amonkhet booster draft hosted by Dreamers Vault Games. Entry fee is $15; players will make small decks out of three booster packs, and compete. Matches are two out of three games.

Movies in the Parks: Hidden Figures

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, July 5th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Powderhorn Park

Another free outdoor screening this week from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is Hidden Figures, the inspiring true story of the black women behind some of NASA’s early successes. This free showing begins 15 minutes after sundown. This showing will have Spanish subtitles.

CONvergence 2017

What: Convention
When: Thursday, July 6th at 12:00 p.m. to Sunday, July 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: DoubleTree by Hilton

CONvergence is an annual four-day convention for fans of sci fi and fantasy of all kinds. The event has a different theme every year, and this year’s theme is “To Infinity and Beyond,” a celebration of space opera. Special guests include Lois McMaster Bujold, Kristopher Carter, Norman Cates, Eric Chu, Tracee Lee Cocco, Naomi Kritzer, Seanan McGuire, Jai Nitz, Ian Truitner and Twin Cities Geek Fan-Featured Guest Saymoukda Vongsay. Come for panels, people watching, room-parties or more.

Twin Cities Geek will be hanging out at a fan table outside CONvergence Mainstage, running the TCG Hydration Challenge in the evenings, and holding a roundtable on Sunday morning where we want to know, “What Do YOU Want in Your Local Geek Culture Magazine?”

MN PokéCon Anniversary Picnic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Thursday, July 6th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: 420 Main St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414

Celebrate a year of MN PokéCon with a meetup, walk, and picnic. Pokémon fans are invited for a cosplay contest, photos with a giant Pikachu, a chance to win a pass to PokéCon 2017, and more. Food will be first come, first serve for the first 200 people to check in for the event.

Civics 101

What: Educational, Community
When: Thursday, July 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: 6700 Portland Avenue, Richfield, MN 55423

Geek out about civic responsibility! Learn about different levels of government, exercising your rights, how laws and passed, and how you can influence policy. Presenters include Congressman Keith Ellison, Richfield mayor Pat Elliot, Hennepin County commissioner Debbie Goettel, and Minnesota senator Patricia Torres Ray.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, July 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Movies in the Parks: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

What: Movies
When: Thursday, July 6th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Luxton Park

Another free outdoor screening this week from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the tale of a ragtag team, Death Star plans, and a harried space middle manager with a very cool cape. This free showing begins 15 minutes after sundown.

Jurassic World at Centennial Lakes Park

What: Movies
When: Thursday, July 6th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Centennial Lakes Park

If you want to attend an outdoor movie this week but aren’t in Minneapolis, enjoy a beautiful evening in Centennial Lakes Park while looking over your shoulders for rogue dinosaurs and Chris Pratts. Jurassic World will begin at 8:30 p.m., and this event is free to the public.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, July 7th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming
When: Friday, July 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Pizza Camp 2017

What: Food & Drink, Community, Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, July 8th at 9:00 a.m. to Sunday, July 9th at 11:30 a.m.
Where: Three Rivers Park District

Come to Pizza Camp for “the pizza party of a lifetime.” Eat pizza, drink beer, hike, sleep in rustic cabins, and feel like a kid at summer camp (if kids were able to legally drink). Registration is 21+ and costs $135. Registration is currently sold out, but the organizers note, “There’s still a chance for tickets. Make sure you join our the 2017 waitlist so you have the first chance to grab the tickets if any are released.”

Saturday Morning Cartoons

When: Saturday, July 8th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: YQdio

Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.”

St. Paul’s Brewing History Bus Tour

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, July 8th at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Summit Brewing

This 21-plus event is an opportunity to delve into St. Paul’s beer-soaked past with a brewery tour, which will feature a look at the old Schmidt Brewery and tours of Flat Earth Brewery and Summit. This is a three-hour tour, and includes beer samples in the $50 price tag. Note that there will be a couple of blocks of walking over uneven surfaces.

Family Day: Backyard Buzz

What: Family, Arts
When: Sunday, July 9th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

This family-friendly event asks how nature inspires art and looks at ways to explore the great outdoors through art. It includes hands-on art making, performances, real live insects, and gallery tours. See the event listing for more details. This event is free.

The Complat Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

What: Books, Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, July 9th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Brit’s Pub (Rooftop)

The Actors Theater of Minnesota presents a comedy that touches upon every one of William Shakespeare’s plays. The event lasts a little less than 2 hours including intermission. There’s no cover, and there will be beer specials.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 9th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays is a dedicated space for lady nerds and geeks at the Source. This recurring weekly event provides a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
