Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, August 28th through Sunday, September 3rd.

Minnesota State Fair

What: Arts, Educational, Food & Drink, Music
When: Thursday, August 24th to Monday, September 4th
Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds

The Great Minnesota Get-Together is here! Come together with thousands of other Minnesotans to get your food, art, agriculture, music, and animal geeking on. This event has shows from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Usher, Phantogram, Garrison Keillor, and more throughout the week. Also check out prize-winning livestock, the miracle of birth, absurd foods, and a general place for some of the best people watching in the great state of Minnesota. Admission is $12 for adults and $9 for kids. See the websites for specific event details and ticket prices for Grandstand concerts.

Knitting Social

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Tuesday, August 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Get social with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available.

9 Nights of Music

What: Educational, Music
When: Tuesday, August 29th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Hear some catchy tunes and learn how to dance while experiencing the tapestry of Twin Cities culture at 9 Nights of Music. This weekly event begins with dance instruction before leading to musical performances. This week’s performer is Boiled in Lead, Celtic and world roots music.

Geek Date Night: Ghost in the Shell (1995)

What: Movies, Nightlife, Trivia
When: Tuesday, August 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clubhouse Jäger

Come for a fun and geeky night complete with trivia, a movie screening, and punnery with host Rob Callahan. Trivia starts at 7:00 p.m. and the movie begins at 9:00 p.m. This is a free event with prizes available including a $50 bar tab, board games, and books. Clubhouse Jäger’s happy hour extends until 10:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, meaning $4 taps and rails.

YogaQuest Continues: Terminator 2

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, August 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Terminator 2.

On the Other Side of the Eye Turns 10

What: Books
When: Wednesday August 30th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: DreamHaven Books and Comics

Once-local speculative Lao poet Bryan Thao Worra will be reading at DreamHaven. Bryan’s work includes On the Other Side of the Eye, Touching Detonations, Winter Ink, Barrow, The Tuk Tuk Diaries: My Dinner With Cluster Bombs, and DEMONSTRA. This will be a great evening to learn about the ways in which Lao American science fiction, fantasy, and horror have grown since the release of his book.

Fearless Comedy Workshop

What: Educational, Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, August 30th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: 400 South Cedar Lake Road, Minneapolis

August’s Fearless Comedy Workshop, hosted by Becci Schmidt and titled “I’m a Kite: Tethering Your Absurdity,” will focus on grounding absurdity in reality for improved comedy. (Think of how much less Rick and Morty would work without realistic human characters and family drama). The host and instructor is a nine-year Brave New Workshop veteran who currently coaches a local improv team, Hot Corner. The workshop is $10.

New Comic Book Day

What: Comics, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, August 30th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Day Block Brewing

In the weekly New Comic Book Day series, see the debut of interesting new comic books and hear sets from local comedians while enjoying delicious beer. Elliot Rahal and Grace Thomas act as hosts.

Group Game Night: Pictionary

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, August 31st at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Byte

Play some Pictionary, meet new friends, and have a great night of fun, food, and drinks at Byte’s inaugural Group Game Night. There will be teams of six people, but if you show up solo or with a smaller team, the organizers will help hook you up with a group. Artistic skills are not required, but creativity and humor will certainly help. Game on!

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, August 31st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, August 31st at 6:30 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender; the 6:30 p.m. is for beginners, and intermediate classes start at 7:30 p.m. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Comics, Meetup
When: Thursday, August 31st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Opening Reception for Mark A. Lone and Erik Lervold

What: Arts
When: Friday, September 1st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Byte

Another event at Byte this week is an evening of wonderful artwork from local artists Erik Lervold and Mark A. Lone. There will be happy hour from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. and the from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m., and the whole evening will be a great opportunity to view these works.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, September 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

GPS Movie Night

What: Movies
When: Friday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

Get together with your fellow geeks for a geeky double feature in this months GPS Movie Night. See two films about searching and investigation on other worlds. Feel free to bring snacks, drinks, or dinner. There will be some concessions available for purchase onsite.

UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade

Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech.

Minnesota Renaissance Festival

What: Arts, Comedy & Theater, Educational, Family
When: Saturday, September 2nd and Sunday, August 27th from 9:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m.
Where: 12364 Chestnut Boulevard, Shakopee

The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is celebrating its 47th season and will be open weekends from August 19th to October 1st. The Renaissance Festival has a large variety of things to experience, including musical acts, comedy shows, artisan markets, food, drink, actors in costume, games, demos, jousting, and kid-themed events. The fest is open rain or shine, and tickets are $23.95 for adults, $21.95 for seniors, and $14.95 for children at the gate; there are a variety of other options available on the website. This weekend’s theme is “International Bazaar.”

LionCon

What: Convention, Gaming
When: Saturday, September 2nd at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday September 3rd at 4:00 p.m.
Where: River Edge Event Center

Geek culture and counterculture combine for the second annual LionCon in St. Cloud. LionCon features role-playing games, board games, card games, video games, computer games, anime viewings, and more. Expect artists, panels, gaming, a cosplay contest, an afterparty, and other attractions. Special guests include Caitlynn French, Steven Brust, Nicole Brune, Christopher D. Schmitz. The con is $40 at the door for admission.

United Geeks of Gaming Open Gaming at Fantasy Flight

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, September 2th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.

Bars, Bootleggers, and Booze Bus Tour

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, September 2nd at 1:00 p.m
Where: Minnesota History Center

Educate yourself while enjoying some of the newest distillers in the Twin Cities area. This tour will take history and booze enthusiasts 21 years or older on a tour with stops at 11 Wells Distillery, the restored Commodore Bar and Restaurant, and the Du Nord Cocktail room; samples are included in the ticket price, which is $50 for the general public or $40 for members of the Minnesota Historical Society.

Illuminated Reef at Can Can Wonderland

What: Arts, Nightlife
When: Saturday, September 2nd and Sunday, September 3rd at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Can Can Wonderland

Take in a September night under the lights of the Illuminated Reef, a large outdoor art installation created by the Illuminated Reef Collective. This installation uses lanterns to depict the creatures of the undersea world, with other reef elements created from discarded or repurposed materials, aiming to show the interconnection of all things. The reef installation is outside, and the suggested donation is $10 or $15 per family.

RPG Sunday Game Day

What: Gaming
When: Sunday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, September 3rd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sunday is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Gender Jam at the Roller Garden

What: Gaming, Community, Sports & Fitness
When: Sunday, September 3rd at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis/Roller Garden

Gender Jam is hitting up the Roller Garden in St. Louis Park for roller skating, rollerblading, video games, arcade games, snacks, and a great trans youth community. The plan is to meet at the Exchange in Minneapolis to ride over together.
