Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, September 25th through Sunday, October 1st.

Creative Club

When: Monday, September 25th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Byte

Creative Club is a casual weekly meetup where you can bring your latest creative project to work on or just show up to mingle and network. While you’re there, you can take advantage of Byte’s food and drink offerings and their communal game library. Be creative and meet new friends in a geeky space!

Star Trek: Discovery Viewing Party

What: Television, Meetup
When: Monday, September 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Star Trek is returning to the small screen with a new series, Star Trek: Discovery, and this is a chance to celebrate with your fellow Trekkies, Trekkers, and other geeks. This viewing party will include the first two episodes of the new series. TC Trek Trivia is organizing this event, which is free and all ages and will continue every Monday throughout the run of the season.

Meet Think Small

What: Educational, Family
When: Tuesday, September 26th at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Think Small

This is free tour of Think Small, a community organization focused on early childhood education. Instructors, executive leaders, and others will be available to answer questions about the program.

Knitting Social

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Tuesday, September 26th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Get social with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available.

Drunk Queer History

What: Education
When: Tuesday, September 26th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: LUSH

Laugh and learn with Drunk Queer History, a night of learning and libations at LUSH. In this 18-plus event, a local storyteller has a few drinks and recounts a story from queer history, which is then interpreted by a team of talented local improv performers. This month, the drunk storyteller will be Lisa Marie Brimmer, and the performers will be Ally Rae and Mawrgyn Roper. Cover is $10, with proceeds going to benefit Minneapolis’s Gadfly Theatre.

Geek Date Night: Blade

What: Movies, Trivia
When: Tuesday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Byte

Geek Date Night continues at its new location with the film Blade. Come for a fun and geeky night complete with trivia, a movie screening, and punnery with host Rob Callahan. Trivia starts at 7:00 p.m. and the movie begins at 9:00 p.m. This is a free event with prizes available, including a $50 bar tab, board games, and books.

Tea and Meeples

What: Food & Drink, Gaming, Meetup
When: Tuesday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. S. Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at Panda Castle in Richfield. This week’s theme is board games, so be ready to chase your tea and company with some board-game fun.

Poetry SlamMN!

What: Arts, Community
When: Tuesday, September 26th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

Poetry SlamMN! is a one of the most competitive poetry slams in the country and is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at Kieran’s in Minneapolis. Doors are at 7:00 p.m., and the show itself begins at 8:00. There is a $10 cover, or $8 for poets and students. Up to 12 poets can throw their names in the hat to compete.

YogaQuest Continues: Batman: The Movie (1966)

When: Tuesday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week, bring all your most creative bat-yoga sound effects.

When: Wednesday, September 27th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Children’s Museum

[email protected] is a 21-plus takeover of the Minnesota Children’s Museum. Let your inner child free for this unique opportunity to play, with attractions including a spiral slide and netted catwalk, a laser maze, air-powered ball launchers, and a number of special programs. The Theater of Public Policy, Can Can Wonderland, and designer Barry Kudrowitz will be there to inspire. This event is $15 and will have a cash bar.

Speed Friending for Cosplayers

What: Meetup
When: Wednesday, September 27th at 6:44 p.m.
Where: 508 Bar and Restaurant

Make some new cosplay pals at Speed Friending for Cosplayers, a speed-friending event and opportunity to network. Spend five minutes one on one with potential new buddies before rotating to the next table, and after an hour possibly come out with 20 new friends. This event is $5.99 in advance or $15 at the door. There will be free professional photography provided to all attendees.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly.

Back to Hogwarts Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Wednesday, Septmeber 27th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Back to Hogwarts is an event celebrating the return to Hogwarts with Harry Potter–themed yoga. This event will repeat to celebrate all seven years of Hogwarts, but students do not need to attend every year. The class is $15, and open to participants over the age of 12.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, September 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Minnesota Renaissance Festival

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy, Educational, Family
When: Friday, September 29th at 9:00 a.m to Sunday, October 1st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 12364 Chestnut Boulevard, Shakopee

The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is celebrating its 47th season and will be open weekends from August 19th to October 1st. The Renaissance Festival has a large variety of things to experience, including musical acts, comedy shows, artisan markets, food, drink, actors in costume, games, demos, jousting, and kid-themed events. The fest is open rain or shine, and tickets are $23.95 for adults, $21.95 for seniors, and $14.95 for children at the gate; there are a variety of other options available on the website. This is the final weekend for the fest and will include a variety of fun events, including Magic and Dungeons & Dragons, with a weekend theme of “Oktoberfest.”

Friday Night Magic

When: Friday, September 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome

’80s Rooftop Dance Party

What: Nightlife
When: Friday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Up-Down Minneapolis

The this dance party is a celebration of Up-Down Minneapolis’s new rooftop bar and will be a great opportunity for geeks to rub shoulders with preps, jocks, skaters and valley girls and dance to rad vinyl from DJ Papersleeves and DJ Mike Suade. There will be $1 off all Indeed beer during this event.

Twin Cities Zine Fest 2017

What: Books, Arts
When: Saturday, September 30th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota Center for Book Arts

Twin Cities Zine Fest is an annual get-together (now in its 13th year) that showcases zines and self-publishing, with a Twin Cities focus and larger view. Geeks define themselves by their passions, and zinesters have been doing the same by narrowcasting to their audiences. Enjoy workshops on comics history, doodling, zine storage, and letterpress printing.

The Gaming Goat Grand Opening Celebration

What: Gaming, Community
When: Saturday, September 30th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Gaming Goat St. Paul

The Gaming Goat is hosting a grand opening for its newest board-gaming store and play space on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. Expect gaming, food, door prizes, gaming demos, and fun throughout the day. There will be 20% to 30% discounts throughout the day, and every $10 spent enters you into a contest for prizes.

La La Land in Concert

What: Music, Movies
When: Saturday, September 30th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday October 1st at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Orchestra Hall

See an award-winning film with the score performed live by the Minnesota Orchestra, conducted by Sarah Hicks. La La Land won the Oscar for best original score and best original song, so this should prove to be a treat. Tickets start at $60.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, September 30th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, October 1st at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
