Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, October 16th through Sunday, October 22nd.

Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

Creative Club

What: Arts
When: Monday, October 16th at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Byte

At this casual weekly meetup, you can bring your latest creative project to work on or just show up to mingle and network. While you’re there, you can take advantage of Byte’s food and drink offerings and their communal game library.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Center on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Out North Watch Party

What: Movies, Community, Trivia
When: Monday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Twin Cities PBS

Enjoy a night of film, fun, and conversation at a party for Out North. a new documentary on Minnesota’s LGBTQ history and celebrate the strides made since the gay liberation movement began in the 1970s. In addition to a screening of the film, expect trivia, a cash bar, and more. Space at this event is limited, so arriving ahead of time is recommended.

Geek Date Night

What: Movies, Trivia
When: Monday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Nomad World Pub

In its newly added Monday-night event at the Nomad, join Geek Night for trivia beginning at 7:00 p.m., based loosely on this week’s three-word theme of “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” As host Rob Callahan says, “There is no cover, no entry fee, and no cheating.”

Photography Club Meetup

What: Meetup, Arts
When: Tuesday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Photography Club meets at Event Horizon in the Waterbury Building on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss topics related to photography and/or participate in photo shoots.

Geek Date Night: Shaun of the Dead

What: Movies, Trivia
When: Tuesday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Byte

Geek Date Night’s Tuesday-night event presents an evening with the gold standard of zombie comedy, Shaun of the Dead. Take part in a pub quiz beginning at 7:00 p.m., followed by a screening at 9:00 p.m., so prepare for cricket bats and meditations on friendship. Trivia teams should be from one to six players. Prizes and glory are available.

YogaQuest Continues: Ghostbusters (2016)

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “The Mother of Monsters,” which looks at the world of Mary Shelley and Lord Byron relating to science and culture. This event is based on Mary and Her Monster, an exhibit being hosted at the Bakken Museum, and the presenter will be Anika Taylor, the Bakken’s outreach program manager. Tickets are $5 to $12 online or at the door.

Tea and Meeples

When: Tuesday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Panda Castle

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week’s theme is crafting, so be ready to chase your tea and company with some creativity

The Not-So-Silent Planet

What: Books, Arts
When: Tuesday, October 17th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The featured performer for October’s session is Kyle Dekker; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.”

MN Publishing Tweet Up

What: Books, Meetup
When: Wednesday, October 18th at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Boom Island Brewing Company

The MN Publishing Tweet Up will be venturing to Boom Island Brewing Co. this week for an evening of lively discussion and libations with fellow writing and publishing geeks. The event is made possible by the Minnesota Book Publishers’ Roundtable and the Author’s Guild.

Trash Film Debauchery: September Mystery Musical

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

Trash Film Debauchery presents a screening of a mystery musical involving zombies, B&Bs, and family. The screening is $5, and getting tickets ahead of time is recommended, as these events often fill up.

Pundamonium: The Minneapolis Pun Slam

What: Theater and Comedy
When: Wednesday, October 18th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground

Pundamonium is a contest of wordplay with 10 contestants, each given two minutes to make puns based on prompts they are given ahead of time. The audience acts as judge, and this process repeats throughout the night until a final pun-off. This night of groans and laughs is $6.

Back to Hogwarts Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Back to Hogwarts is an event celebrating the return to Hogwarts with Harry Potter–themed yoga. This event will repeat to celebrate all seven years of Hogwarts, but students do not need to attend every year. The class is $15 and open to participants over the age of 12.

Where: Perkins, Minneapolis West Bank

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

In Their Own Words: The Tretter Transgender Oral History Project

What: Educational, Community
When: Thursday, October 19th at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Elmer L. Andersen Library, Room 120

This event is a celebration of the Tretter Transgender Oral History project and a new exhibit at the U of M’s Andersen library. The evening will feature selections from the project, including documents, artifacts, and more from the library’s Tretter Collection of LGBTQ archives. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and entertainment will be provided by community member and recording artist Venus DeMars.

Twin Cities Roleplaying Happy Hour/RPG Swap Meet

What: Gaming, Community
When: Thursday, October 19th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Byte

Join members of the Twin Cities Roleplaying Google Plus community for happy hour at Byte, and feel free to bring your weirdest RPG find to see if you can get others to run it with you. Byte’s happy hour lasts from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. and involves a D20 roll to determine your discount. So swap gaming stories, pitch games, or just hang out with other geeks in a highly geek-friendly space in downtown Minneapolis.

Co-Op Talk

What: Educational, Gaming
When: Thursday, October 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

Co-Op Talk is a monthly discussion of interactive media and digital games held by Minnesota tech nonprofit Glitch. The event begins with a short time to mingle and chat, with snacks and refreshments, followed by this month’s discussion topic: “Co-Op Talk Turns 3! Video Game Anniversary Editions and Celebrations,” led by Katie Simning.

Third Thursday: Artoberfest

What: Arts, Music, Nightlife, Educational
When: Thursday, October 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

The theme for the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s monthly Third Thursday event for October is in the spirit of the season, Artoberfest. This is a chance to celebrate the art of beer with the Growler, see the special exhibit Eyewitness Views: Making History in 18th-Century Europe for free, and taste a variety of craft beers from local breweries while enjoying live music.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

What: Crafting, Meetup
When: Thursday, October 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its subclub Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Double-Blind Improv

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, October 19th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Honey

Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is a “short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month.

Trivia Against Humanity

When: Thursday October 19th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.

Anime Fusion 2017: Racing through Time

What: Conventions
When: Friday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, October 22nd at 4:00 p.m.
Where: DoubleTree by Hilton Minneapolis—Park Place

Anime Fusion is a Twin Cities anime convention featuring panels, anime showings, cosplay, gaming, and more. Guests of honor this year include Carrie Savage, Josh Grelle, Samurai Dan and Jillin, and Josh Gremillion. This event covers a wide variety of interests and will also include a costume contest, photo sessions, a charity auction, and space for artists. See the website for complete schedule information. Preregistration is closed, but walkup registration is $45 for the whole weekend, with a variety of other options available.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, October 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome

Halloween Horror Meditation

What: Sports & Fitness, Movies
When: Friday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Meditate on horror to prepare for Halloween at this special event at YQdio in uptown. $10 minimum donation is recommended for this night of confronting and understanding that mind killer, fear.

The Price is Wrong: The Vilification Tennis Game Show

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, October 20th and Saturday, October 21st at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

If you have warm feelings of nostalgia for classic game shows like Family Feud, The Match Game, or The Price is Right, prepare to have it violated with a night of comedy based on the framework of those shows. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 in advance.

Open Gaming at Fantasy Flight Games

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, October 21st at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center

The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own, and there are more on hand at the Fantasy Flight Games Center.

Como Friends ZooBoo

What: Family
When: Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Como Park Zoo and Conservatory

This family-friendly event at the zoo is a four-night alternative to traditional trick or treating, and provides Halloween surprises for little ones. This event is perfect for kids from 3 to 8 and includes live entertainment and craft projects. Tickets start at $6, and proceeds go to helping the zoo. Costumes are strongly encouraged.

Nosferatu (1922) with Live Musical Score by Rats and People Orchestra

What: Movies
When: Saturday, October 21st at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

Silent horror classic Nosferatu is really at its best with a live score, so this event at the Parkway is a great opportunity for a unique and almost ideal viewing experience. Tickets are $10, and concessions are available at the theater.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, October 22nd at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sunday is a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.
