Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

Creative Club

When: Monday, October 23rd at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Byte

At this casual weekly meetup, you can bring your latest creative project to work on or just show up to mingle and network. While you’re there, you can take advantage of Byte’s food and drink offerings and their communal game library.

Star Trek: Discovery Viewing Party

What: Television, Meetup
When: Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Star Trek has returned to the small screen with a new series, Star Trek: Discovery, and this is a chance to celebrate with your fellow Trekkies, Trekkers, and other geeks. TC Trek Trivia is organizing this event, which is free and all ages and will continue every Monday throughout the run of the season. Due to this event not being held last week, the group will be watching episodes 5 (“Choose Your Pain”) and 6 (“Lethe”) this week.

Meet Think Small

Where: Think Small

This is free tour of Think Small, a community organization focused on early childhood education. Instructors, executive leaders, and others will be available to answer questions about the program. Wine and cheese are provided.

Story Forge

When: Tuesday, October 24th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: GlitchHQ

This monthly event by local tech nonprofit Glitch centers on teaching the art of storytelling in games. It focuses on the special challenges of writing for interactive fiction and provides a space where game storytellers can meet and work together. Every skill level is welcome.

Get off My World!: A Live Doctor Who Podcast

What: Arts, Comedy & Theater
When: Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Theater

Get Off My World! will be bringing its locally created Doctor Who podcast mayhem to the Phoenix Theater for a night of laughs, running, sonic screwdrivers, and more. Take part in a live podcast recording and learn about classic Doctor Who monsters, trivia, and songs from the Sevateem. Tickets are $5.

Jack Zipes Presents Tales of Wonder

When: Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

University of Minnesota professor emeritus and international fairy-tale authority Jack Zipes will be at Magers & Quinn on Tuesday to promote his latest book. Tales of Wonder is a “pictorial history of fairy-tale postcards from the late nineteenth century to the present,” which gives “a fascinating look at how key scenes of fairy tales have been rendered over time.”

YogaQuest Continues: Stranger Things

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. Things are about to get upside down with this week’s theme Stranger Things.

Tea and Meeples

Where: Panda Castle

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week’s theme is RPG One-Shot, so be ready to chase your tea and company with creative group storytelling, problem solving and dice!

Poetry SlamMN!

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, October 24th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub

Poetry SlamMN! is a one of the most competitive poetry slams in the country and is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at Kieran’s in Minneapolis. Doors are at 7:00 p.m., and the show itself begins at 8:00. There is a $10 cover, or $8 for poets and students. Up to 12 poets can throw their names in the hat to compete.

(Comic) Books & Bars: Planet Hulk

What: Comics
When: Wednesday, October 25th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Comic Book College

Get in the spirit for Thor: Ragnarok with this special discussion of one of the comics that influenced the upcoming film. This discussion of Planet Hulk will be led by Jeff Kamin of Books & Bars. Get free tickets to the movie while supplies last, with the chance to pick up some Thor swag as well.

Back to Hogwarts Yoga

When: Wednesday, October 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Back to Hogwarts is an event celebrating the return to Hogwarts with Harry Potter–themed yoga. This event will repeat to celebrate all seven years of Hogwarts, but students do not need to attend every year. The class is $15 and open to participants over the age of 12.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, October 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly.

Tabletop Tester Night: Dragon Factory

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, October 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Clockwerks Brewing

Clockwerks Brewing presents the second installment of Tabletop Tester Night, a series in which they invite local game designers to lead guests in playing a new game. This month is Dragon Factory by local game designer Scott Almes. There will be prizes and giveaways.

 

Gravity Star Party

We stand at the edge of an endless cosmic ocean, and Star Parties are an opportunity to gaze into infinity with fun activities like a planetarium program, fun activities, and a chance to look into a telescope.

Crafty Geek/Make it Sew

When: Thursday, October 26th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Twin Cities Horror Festival

What: Arts, Theater & Comedy, Films
When: Thursday, October 26th–Sunday, November 5th
Where: Southern Theater

The Twin Cities Horror Festival returns for its sixth year with “11 terrifying days of onstage horror” at Minneapolis’s Southern Theater. See the festival website for the full lineup of horror-themed performances, which include theater, dance, and more.

Trivia Against Humanity

Where: Clockwerks Brewing

This regular event at Clockwerks Brewing represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a steampunk-themed bar and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, October 27th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome.

Labyrinth Theatrical Showing and Shadow Cast

What: Movies, Comedy & Theater
When: Friday, October 27th and Saturday October 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Minnsky Theater

Dance that magic dance and enjoy a shadowcast performance alongside a theatrical screening of Labyrinth. Allow the babe with the power to put a magic spell on you as you enjoy a cult classic film including the work of David Bowie, Gates McFadden, and Jim Henson (among many other incredibly talented people). Tickets are $8.

The Rocky Horror Yoga Show

YogaQuest presents the second annual Rocky Horror Yoga Show, a unique opportunity to yoga along to cult cinema’s most prolific work of audience participation. Costumes are encouraged. There is a $10 recommended minimum donation.

Art in Motion: Ballet Spooktacular

What: Arts
When: Friday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday October 28th at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Twin Cities Ballet of Minnesota

The Ballet Spooktacular is a chance to get in the spirit and celebrate Halloween with a performance event involving a zombie football ballet, costume contests, and more ghoulish fun. The performance will be followed by a reception featuring treats and refreshments. Tickets are $16.

Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert

When: Friday October 27th and Saturday October 28th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Orchestra Hall

See the film that introduced audiences to Indiana Jones along with a live orchestral performance of John Williams’s iconic score. Sarah Hicks will be conducting the orchestra for this fun night of pulp adventure. Expect some performers in costume, and subtitles for clarity. Tickets start at $60.

Tsuinishi Anime Club

When: Friday, October 27th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, October 27th and Saturday, October 28th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. As usual, there will be performances on both Friday and Saturday this month in honor of Halloween—tickets will sell out, so buy yours early.

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck

When: Saturday, October 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Where: Ridgedale Center

The official Hello Kitty food truck returns to Ridgedale Center this weekend, so make sure to take this opportunity to enjoy a variety of cute treats while supplies last.

Discovery Days: Spooky Science

What: Educational, Family, Science & Tech
When: Saturday, October 28th at 10:30 a.m.
Where: The Bakken Museum

Come to the Bakken and see spooky science involving creepy masks, mythical monsters and the real animals that inspired them, scary stories, and puppet shows. These activities are included in the $10 price of admission (free for members).

Como Friends ZooBoo

What: Family
When: Saturday, October 28th and Sunday, October 29th at 4:30 p.m.
Where: Como Park Zoo and Conservatory

This family-friendly event at the zoo is a four-night alternative to traditional trick or treating, and provides Halloween surprises for little ones. This event is perfect for kids from 3 to 8 and includes live entertainment and craft projects. Tickets start at $6, and proceeds go to helping the zoo. Costumes are strongly encouraged.

Got to Be Something Here Launch Event with Andrea Swensson

What: Books, Music
When: Saturday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Fitzgerald Theater

Andrea Swensson of Minnesota Public Radio fame will be at the Fitzgerald Theater to promote her new book Got to Be Something Here, her exploration of the Minneapolis sound, and a history that begins in the year of Prince’s birth. Tickets to this event are $25 to $50 and can be purchased online. Swensson will be joined by artists André Cymone, Nooky Jones, PaviElle, Wanda Davis, the Valdons, and Wee Willie Walker.

Transmission Presents: Halloween 1984

What: Nightlife
When: Saturday, October 28th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Psycho Suzi’s Motor Lounge

Return to 1984 with local DJ Jake Rudh of Transmission in an evening of pop, R&B, rock, and new wave straight out of the ’80s. Costumes are strongly encouraged, and there will be a photographer on site to capture you looking your spookiest. Expect a costume contest with a framed severed arm (prop) as a first prize. This event is 21-plus and free.

Strange Things

When: Saturday, October 28th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue

Flip Phone and DJ Shannon Blowtorch present Strange Things, a Halloween Dance night at First Avenue and the Seventh Street Entry. Expect sets from great local DJs, swag, special guest star AJA from RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9, a costume contest ($500 cash prize for the grand prize and swag from the Smitten Kitten for runners-up), and drag performances throughout the night. Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 at the door.

 

Gender Jam: Animals and Art

What: Meetup
When: Sunday, October 29th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam, a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth, invites attendees to “Dress up as your favorite furry, scaly, or imaginary creature” for this meetup. There will be supplies on site to make ears, masks, tails, Sharpie tie-dye, and more.

Kaiju Buffet

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, October 29th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Feed the monster within yourself with a trip to Pepito’s Mexican buffet (recently put up for sale) and a screening of a giant monster movie! This event is family friendly, with buffet access starting at 12:00 p.m. and the move itself starting at 1:00 p.m. Expect a different Kaiju film every month.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, October 29th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Hallie Q. Brown-Ramsey Hill Annual Community Halloween Party

What: Family, Community, Arts
When: Sunday, October 29th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Hallie Q. Brown Community Center

The annual Halloween party is returning to Hallie Q. Brown Community center, and with it come costumes, face painting, games, treats, pumpkin decorating, a haunted house, cookies, and more. This event partners with Costumers for a Cause and is free to the public.

The Fly

What: Movies
When: Sunday, October 29th at 3:00 p.m.
Where: The Trylon Cinema

See a rare 35mm print of 1986’s The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis and directed by David Cronenberg. Expect body horror, existential horror, and more. Tickets are $8. See the Trylon’s website for other spooky movie screenings this week.
