Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, November 20th through Sunday, November 26th.

Crepe & Spoon Grand Opening

Where: Crepe & Spoon

Come celebrate the opening of Crepe & Spoon, a new purveyor of everything that you need—ice cream and crepes—from the minds of two locals. Expect fun and strange ice cream and crepe combinations and a raffle for vegan meat from the Herbivorous Butcher.

Board Game Night at Tamarack Tap Room

What: Gaming
When: Monday, November 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Tamarack Tap Room

The Tamarack Tap Room, in partnership with the Gaming Goat, presents a weekly Monday-evening meetup for board games and beer—meet new gamer friends and enjoy a brew. As with most public board-game events, feel free to bring your favorite games to share, as well as a positive, respectful attitude for other people’s favorites.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, November 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Board Games at Black Dog Cafe

What: Gaming, Community
When: Monday, November 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Black Dog Cafe

Enjoy a night of games and beers with with this event hosted by the Saint Paul Board Game Group. The main event of the night will be open gaming, running from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., but fun will be had all night. Bring some of your own favorites or try out games that others have brought while being considerate of other people’s games.

Solaris

What: Movies
When: Monday, November 20th and Tuesday November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

Enjoy a classic work of Soviet science fiction with Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, a film about an orbital station around a distant planet and the way that the past haunts the psychologist who travels there. Tickets are $8, and you can find other screenings at the Trylon here.

Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, November 20th, Friday, November 24th, and Saturday, November 25th at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, November 26th at 2:30 p.m.
Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre

Gothic horror meets Green T Productions’ signature physical style in this adaptation of Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking science-fiction novel. Green T is an organization that “inspires, expands horizons and challenges assumptions with creative physical performance that straddles the boundaries of music, dance and theatre.” Tickets are $22 with a variety of discounts available.

Café Scientifique

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: Tuesday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture, featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “Invisible Architects: Mycorrhizal Fungi,” which looks at the world of invisible fungi and possible secrets to combating climate change. This event is based on the work of Jeremiah Henning, a postdoctoral associate at the University of Minnesota. Tickets are $5 to $12 online or at the door.

GPS Open Meeting

What: Community
When: Tuesday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society, which is a volunteer-run geek community organization, hosts quarterly meetings. Come to this meeting if you want to have a voice and help steer this community in the long run; this meeting counts towards voting eligibility for GPS. There is a social hour prior to the meeting, starting at 6:00 p.m. (Consider bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There is a donation box available at GPS.)

Tea and Meeples: Board Games

What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Gaming
When: Tuesday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield

Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. This week’s theme is board games, so be ready to chase your tea and company with some gaming.

YogaQuest Continues: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Tuesday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, so get your ocarina and your N64 ready. This event costs $15.

Hip Hop Nutcracker

What: Theater & Comedy, Music
When: Tuesday, November 21st at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, November 22nd at 7:30 p.m.
Where: State Theatre

Come see the holiday classic The Nutcracker come alive with a modern spin. This blend of classical ballet and hip-hop features the work of guest MC Kurtis Blow, one of the founding fathers of hip-hop, and transplants the original tale to Brooklyn in the 1980s. The Illusionists Present The Magic of Adam Trent

What: Comedy & Theater
When: Tuesday, November 21st and Wednesday, November 22nd at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 24th at 2:00 p.m. and
7:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 25th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Ordway Center for the Performing Arts

Brighten up your increasingly cold and dark November with a night of illusions from Adam Trent, the breakout magician from stage show The Illusionists. Tickets start at $44 for standing-room-only tickets, and this promises to be a 90-minute spectacle of amazing illusions, comedy, and magic for the whole family.

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly.

Catching Fire Yoga

What: Sports & Fitness, Books
When: Thursday, November 23rd at 5:30 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Catching Fire Yoga is a new class about radical self-acceptance and love based on the messages put forth in The Hunger Games. This new yoga class is open to all body types and experience levels and costs $15. Mats and props will be available.

Geek Slink Belly Dance

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: YQdio

Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Thursday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Friday, November 24th at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, November 24th at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at Waterbury Center

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series

Vilifikation Tennis Sees Red

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, November 24th at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl

Vilifikation Tennis (known to decadent capitalists as Vilification Tennis) brings back fuzzy memories of the proletariat smashing the bourgeoisie with an iron fist in this “offensive look back at the Cold War.” Enjoy a night of comedy and misremembered Soviet kitsch for $15, or $12 in advance.

Brickmania Toyworks: A LEGO Fan Expo

What: Family, Community
When: Saturday, November 25th starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, November 26th starting at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Brickmania Toyworks

Brickmania Toyworks will be hosting a LEGO expo at their warehouse in Northeast Minneapolis. This is your chance to see some of the best and most exciting LEGO works on display, including works from Brickmania themselves and the Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club, Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, TwinLUG, Jesse’s Brick Galaxy, and a Guinness World Record–holding Largest K’Nex Ball from Austin Granger. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Northeast’s own Nye’s done up in LEGO! Tickets are $8 and are timed entry. (Consider bringing a new or gently used book or toy to donate to the Twin Cities Geek Holiday Drive! There will be a donation box available at Brickmania Toyworks on all Fan Expo dates.)

Tea Journey with Black Tea

When: Saturday, November 25th at 11:30 a.m.
Where: Bingley’s Teas

Tea crosses cultural and geographical divides, and Bingley’s Teas invites you to take in black teas from Nepal and Sri Lanka to China and Japan, learning about the history and process behind a variety of types and the impact on flavor. Seats are $20 for this limited-size class, and reservations are required in advance; calling (612) 845-1707 to claim yours.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid in Concert

What: Movies, Music, Family
When: Saturday, November 25th and Sunday, November 26th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Orchestra Hall

The Minnesota Orchestra will be performing the soundtrack live to accompany The Little Mermaid, a Disney classic from 1989 that marked the beginning of the “Disney Renaissance” and the return to the studio’s status as an animation powerhouse. Follow a young mermaid named Ariel through her undersea adventures. Tickets start at $27.50.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, November 25th at 11:59 p.m.
Where: Uptown Theatre

At 11:55 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, November 26th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks.

Kaiju Buffet

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, November 26th at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

Dig into monstrous portions at Pepito’s Mexican Buffet as you watch your favorite kaiju (giant monsters) wreak havoc onscreen in this family-friendly event. The giant monster movie is a mystery and will not be revealed until you are in for the buffet. The movie screening itself will be at 1:00 p.m.; the earlier start time reflects the buffet. The ticket (including food) is $8.

Gender Jam: Spa Day

What: Meetup, Community
When: Sunday, November 26th at 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Exchange Minneapolis

Gender Jam, a meetup group for trans, gender-nonconforming, questioning, and intersex youth, will be enjoying a spa day this week. Enjoy facial masks, manicures and pedicures, fun hairstyles, and makeup fun. As always, bring your permission slip if you are under 18.

Trivia Against Humanity

What: Trivia
When: Sunday, November 26th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Can Can Wonderland

This regular event at Can Can Wonderland represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: high concept min-golf/carnival fun and absurd trivia. The event is hosted by Sam Spadino and Sidney Oxborough.
